It kind of hit me the other day while I way playing tennis. I cleared my throat and at that second I realized how I don't constantly cough or clear my throat anymore. Truth is, while I was completely obsessed with all the benefits of not smoking for a long time, I rarely really think about how great it is to not smoke anymore. I don't think about how I smell really good all the time I don't think about how much money I'm saving I don't think about the time I don't have to spend outside, alone I don't think about how I had to change my shirt 2-3 times a day I don't think about how I obsessively washed my hands 20-30+ times a day I don't think about how my breath still stank after I brushed my teeth I don't think about the all the gum I used to chew I don't think about how miserable flying was because I couldn't smoke on the plane I don't think about how I would have to stop for smoke breaks whenever I did pretty much anything that lasted longer than 45 minutes, wasting not only my time, but also the time of whoever I Was with I don't think about how my girlfriend hated how much I smoked. I don't think about how I need to kick the habit anymore I don't think about a lot of things. I guess my point is that I don't really think about how great it is to not smoke anymore, I just don't smoke and I tell you what, it's a great place to be. So to any of you that may be struggling, please know that it gets better and you will get to that place one day. I loved smoking more than anyone and if I can achieve this, anyone can. NOPE!11 points

Is it too quiet in here ? Is everybody OK ? For everybody quit and quitting, every day Free is an incredible achievement. I remember, often stringing minutes together is a triumph. Every crave beaten is a giant success and you must be very kind to yourself with rewards. The simplest of rewards, little celebrations, a peaceful walk, a moment with a book or a luxurious long bath will rejuvenate you and make you stronger for the next barrage. Remember, you will never ever have to go through this transition again. Already, your brain is re-wiring its pleasure receptors. The cilia in your lungs is sloughing off ugly, sticky tar. Your heart is free from the stress of smoking, your blood pressure is normalizing. Ha ! You don't stink ! You have quit smoking. Let that sink in ! You have quit smoking. Bask in the applause.8 points

I don't actually have any advice, but, every time one of our members has gone on a trip where they have flown they come back and talk about how great it was not having to smoke. Can't wait to hear your story. Have a good trip!!!7 points

Hello one and all.. Medals for best team opening ceremony outfits go to 3 of the Europeans... First is Scotland with there blue an white polos and their blue kilts.... 2nd would be the POM's, black shorts or slacks with white t-shirts with a red dragon on it...and the welsh for their black shorts and tropical shirts that looked like a desert sunset.... But its gold for all of us... Cos we came to NOPE! Cos nothing controls our lives but us. Topic of the day: Secret Pleasure Songs The Aussies wore frickin suits with ties.... Burmuda wore burmuda shorts with knee high socks and suit jackets....and Canada.. Looked like all their uniforms had been screwed up into balls and let dry all crinkle... The had black shorts, white t-shirts and red short sleeve shirts left unbuttoned...but they looked the most unloved.... @reciprocity is it any wonder they do so bad, noone loves em.6 points

Nothing is going to reach the ostriches whose heads are in the sand. ...and yet- It could influence people who haven't yet started to smoke. It might help that person who is trying to quit; to stay quit. It could be the tipping point for that person who is seriously considering a quit to smoking. Throw enough seeds and something may grow.6 points

Travelling is so much easier being a non smoker ! Travelling is so much easier having headphones and something interesting or soothing to listen to. Take a really good book, a coloring book, writing paper and now, if you have a phone you have so many options (games etc). People watching is fun. Talking to strangers can be interesting. Me, I love to fly. I love looking out the window at the clouds and the quilt of the earth. If things are dodgy, I do a lot of deep breathing. I know travel can be stressful but, it was far more stressful being a smoker. Remember who you are, you are a non-smoker, you don't smoke anymore. Have a safe journey and tell us all about it when you can.6 points

Hi Giveintowin, thanks for posting this. I've a holiday in 8 weeks time and holiday is a big first for me not smoking. Re flying I remember my pal said instead of that hell you have as a smoker not being able to smoke at the airport, it was actually good being able to chill out and not be worrying that you cant have a fag for X amount of hours. You know fags wouldn't calm your flying nerves. I bet being a smoker made your panic worse as hey all us smokers were in a panic travelling as we couldn't smoke. I really hope its better for you being a non smoker and I think it could well be. Im hoping to enjoy my time at the airport, eating a big breakfast, have a large glass of wine, go shopping...instead of panicking about when i can have my next smoke. I would have a glass of wine at the airport just to chill you out, but thats just me, I know not everyone is like that or would agree.6 points

Guys I gotta fly tomorrow on a plane. I have to confess that I don’t fly well. It’s even almost resulted in panic attacks. I’m not sure since I felt so sick physically it could have been that. I wanted to prepare in a way and put it out there that this may be a time when I think about smoking more. Id just appreciate if anyone supported me/shared their experience or something in order to help me through. I will not be able to post when I’m going through this since I’ll be on a plane.5 points

Looking forward to spring. Going on three months no smoke. I just got new computer and software for work. I’m not good at learning new things. But I suppose I don’t have a choice. At least I don’t have to pay for it. (independent franchise kind of thing) It’s all good.. I don’t think it’s quiet in here at all. I cant keep up with all the posts.5 points

Too difficult to repost. So follow the link for the source. https://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/12/health/smokings-health-toll-worse-than-previously-thought-study-says.html Basically more and more bad stuff is being linked either directly or inferred to smoking. Apparently its not just lung cancer and heart attacks.5 points

Eventually we get to that place where we don't think about smoking. Except its not an event so much as a non-event. An anti-climax of biblical proportions.5 points

Hey gitw, had my first flight smoke free ever around 4 weeks ago. Like you, I'm not the best of flyers, but the worst of the nerves are reserved for take off and landing. Turbulence in the air doesn't bother me. Anyhow before the latest trip, the routine used to be have 2 to 3 cigarettes outside the terminal before heading in and then if there was a smoking area have a couple more before the flight. So this last time outside the terminal it was just about waiting for my wife to vape and reflecting that the routine for me was a bit different this time. I was actually very relaxed about not worrying about nicotine intake, nrt gum and the like. It didn't make the take off or landing any better, but not did it make it worse. The routine for those just remains eyes closed and deep breathing. Hope you find the same thing and wishing a great trip.5 points

Before I quit, I maintained my denial about the dangers of smoking but, when I had made the decision to quit, things changed. I then acquired a voracious appetite for the truth and it did, indeed, helped to cement my quit. It still does.5 points

Well one good thing is you wouldn't have been able to smoke on the plane anyway so there won't be the smell. Maybe your anxiety was worse in the past because you couldn't smoke. So 1 week after I quit I had to go to softball were at least 50% of the adults smoke... Where all my mates smoke but I did it... The worst for me was the first family function both smoke and NRT free...I love my family but we all know each others buttons... I was more worried about how bad it was going to be than it actually was...and the anxiety I normally have around them wad better because I wasn't sneaking around to smoke. You have got this mate. You are stronger than you ate giving yourself credit for. Don't forget that this time you fly you won't have that nico demon bltch in ya head 15mins into the flight reminding you how long ya got to ya next smoke. Suck some lollies, have a chewie, do a Sudoku or crossword or word search even... Getting your brain focused and thinking about something else that needs concentration can help. Will keep ya in my thoughts and remember were all back on the train cheering you on.5 points

Deep breathing, water, walking and I played online solitaire (several different variations) endlessly!!! Still do! After being quit over a year now... discovered a sugarless gum called Ice Breakers Ice Cubes. I like the plastic containers they come in (I recycle them!), you have to flip open the lid to get one or more out....they are shaped like little cubes and there are lots of different flavors.5 points
