  1. Hi all I haven't been on Quit Train for a while. I used this board all the time when I quit on 18 April 2017 and I found the support so helpful. I was just wondering how everyone is getting on. I also though I would leave a message to the newbies to say it really does get easier. I hardly think about it anymore, even when leaving airports after a flight - I would spark up as soon as I got outside! For me the process was: Week 1 - hell on earth! Month 1 - as above! After 2 months, I was still getting triggers when I got in the car, off a train etc 6 months - the triggers were fewer 9 months - as above 1 year - so chuffed and felt liberated Now - I would never ever want to smoke again and the thought of it makes me feel rubbish I was on 30 a day, so if I could do it, you all can! Anyway, let me know how your quits are going. Claire

  6. Good morning NOPErs and welcome to the last day of the month. So today is World Rangers Day. Around the work, park rangers are on the front line in the fight to protect our natural heritage. At all times there are park rangers somewhere in the world fighting to protect what we have ... right now those in California are fighting to help the fire services protect everyone from the fires. So for the men and women around the world working to protect our natural heritage, thanks. NOPE .... not today, not tomorrow, not ever, forever! Topic of the Day: Birthdays

  8. Goodness where do I start, I last rode the Quit Train a long long time again and fell off a few times before I exited at the last station. I can still see quite a few names here, Babs, Doreen, Maryland Quitter not sure if Tracey or Tinker are still around who I absconded with from another distant forum a long time ago too. Well fast forward a few years, and I quit 3 days ago and all you guys popped into my head. Weird right! No I think it was you calling me to let me know the support was still here to finally do it this time. So got a first class ticket, armed with my Nicorette Quickmist and here we go. Feels good to be back on the rail again. Oh and its Jackie by the way, Bonnie Scotland now in my 50's not 40's urghh and wanting to finally be free from this demon. I quit my job at the Bank 18 months ago, I'm self employed now another good decision that I made, my son still has an eating disorder but he is still here. So many things have come to pass so waving hello at everyone. xx

  10. It is a sad reality that most of us here will have been touched in some way by the sadness and horror of Lung Cancer. So when I was researching what 'days' it was today... and let me just say there were 9 options I found globally for 1 August the information I found out about Lung Cancer shocked and sadly surprised me. Sadly because I feel it was facts I should have known and had either chosen to ignore or black out because surely it should be common knowledge. These are some things I learnt (or re-learnt) or knew: So what surprised me was that at the beginning of the 1900's lung cancer was relatively rare and now it is the second most common cancer globally (behind non-melanoma skin cancer). So this is globally, I know in Australia it is 6th, in the US it is 2nd, in the UK it is 3rd in Canada it is 2nd and for Portuguese men it is 3rd (couldn't find gender neutral results so not sure how skewed that is). 90% of lung cancers are preventable. The most common causes are smoking, work pollutants (uranium, radiation, asbestos), air pollution, nutritional deficiencies Lung Cancer is the most common secondary sight for metastasized melanoma (skin cancer). I new this because I have lost 3 friends to secondary skin cancer in their lung tissues. Smoking is responsible for 94% of Lung Cancers. Quitting smoking and reducing exposure to passive tobacco smoke can significantly reduce patient risk for developing lung cancer. The risk of lung cancer decreases with each year you are quit. Medical advances in the past 10 years in relation to treatment and early diagnosis are more than occurred in the previous 50 years combined. Lung Cancer claims more deaths yearly than Breast, Colon & Prostrate cancers combined. Lung cancer is vile, it destroys not only its victims but the people around them but we can reduce our chances of developing this disease and we can educate the generations coming behind us so that the risks we have taken on ourselves are not theirs. So for all those we have lost, Vale, and to all those suffering, keep fighting, stay strong. (edit)... and for all those left behind *hugs* and hold on to the happy memories and think of them with love and fondness always. For anyone lurking... do yourself a favour and give up, Quit, pledge NOPE (not one puff ever)... because each day you don't smoke you are improving the odds that you can avoid this disease.

  11. Good Morning NOPErs .... welcome to the 8th month of the year which some of us celebrate as Fishing Month, some of us celebrate as Happiness Happens Month and the @Wee fluffy me and myself strive to achieve Anti-Frizz Month. On the daily front there are two significant world days that apply to all of us... the first of August is World Wide Web day.... and lets face it without the www we wouldn't have each other to share this journey and to support and guide us at the cross roads we come to... the second on for today which is a harder one to face is that today is World Lung Cancer Day... a day to remember those we have lost, acknowledge the advances made and look forward to a time when this is once again not the most common form of cancer. NOPE ... I value myself enough to be smoke free.

  15. I did it. Day one is over. It certainly has been a hard one. d2 mentioned in another thread of mine how after a few times of going through a crave it gets weaker. Well the morning coffee was a hard one to cope with and my after meal lunch one was iffy but after dinner it was becoming a bit easier to deal with. So that was an awesome feeling that Yes things do improve. Thanks to everyone. Your responses and help are all appreciated. So here I am at the beginning of day 2. Can't believe I made it. No turning back now. Full steam ahead.

  16. Jo, the below is said with all love and respect, but WTF? You stupid sod. What on earth were you doing letting it get that far? You know that you have an army of people here who have your back, who are willing you to succeed, who you can reach out to at any time day or night. Sorry if I sound annoyed, but I am. I am frightened of what a slip would mean to you. Would you get back on the wagon straight away or would you disappear tail between your legs because you don't want to lose face with your friends here? Would you get back on the wagon at all because before it took you an age to quit again. What you have already got under your belt these last eight months is precious. You know I am proud of you and what you have achieved and faced down through your quit and I am proud that you had the strength to step back from the edge. I am also extremely proud that you have the bravery to post your near miss here, but don't ever push it that far again. I'm not sure if this has been posted here before, I know a number of wake up calls have, but take just 15 minutes of your time. It'll remind you why we don't want to play russian roulette any more.

  17. Jo I suggest you copy and paste your post from here into the "Pre Respond to Your Own SOS". Then, if this ever comes up again you can see just how worked up this whole episode got you and how relieved you are that you didn't take that final, fatal step. Also, I've spent a lot of time picking out a "nine" gif for your August anniversary. Please don't piss me off.

  21. Great job and mindset, Nikki! The latter is a strength that will serve you well in this journey to freedom. Oh! Wait a minute! You're already free! Yes, even after one day, you've established your freedom. All that remains is for you to hold onto it. KTQ!

  22. Truthfully? ... probably vanish into the ether not wanting to lose face.... and it took well over a decade to have a serious go at this again so this one is the one... there can be no reset moments. Don't worry I'm annoyed at me too. I know I'm 1 puff away from a packet a day and I know I deliberately avoided here last night because I knew how easy it would be for everyone to talk me down.. I was behaving like a belligerent teen... and if I didn't fess up to it here it would be a slippery slope I had put myself on.

  23. If you're anything like me I have to sink or swim because the only thing that floats is my head How does gooky get between your toes if you're wearing shoes and socks?

  24. Have you tried vigorous exercise when the cravings hit and the anxiety starts to snowball? It worked for me a couple of times during the early days of the process. Glad you didn't smoke, but be careful about flirting with disaster. It was a cool song, but not a good blueprint for quitting smoking.

  25. Oh dear jo, that was a really close call for you! Did you not think to try your air cigarette before walking all that way? I still use mine from time to time, no shame in that game. I'm so glad you made it through with your quit intact. Please remember that you're not alone, use us to help you through next time ok? Xoxo

  26. Yay! Thanks guys, After a pack a day for almost 40 years, I never thought I’d be celebrating this milestone. Just know that no matter how long or how much you have smoked in the past, don’t give up - you CAN quit. There is life after cigarettes and it is sweet. Smoking is not an option for me today because I am one puff away from a pack a day!

  27. Friday- Zumba and kickboxing Saturday- dance aerobics and yoga Sunday- just some walking Today- rest day i must say the addition of a weekly yoga class has been beneficial and also challenging. I'd like to do at least one or two more per week but gym/work schedules don't allow for it just now. I didn't realize how tight I had become. By tight, I mean inflexible. The stretching has been good but I've got a long way to go to being as limber as I'd like to be. But hey- goals are good motivation!

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
