  1. After numerous attempts I have decided this 1 will finally allow me to break with smoking after 40 years. I love hill walking and the smoking is having a limiting influence on my range and speed. Plus I begrudge the money spent on the addiction. I'm also worried that the next decades of life could be spent attached to a machine helping me to breathe. So with some trepidation and hope I'm embarking on a last attempt to slay the addiction. I've got patches and mouth spray but more importantly my kids are behind me. Strange thing is I'm smoking more on the run up to my quit. Up from 30 per day to 50 plus! Thanks for reading this.

  9. I hear you @WeegieWoman and I appreciate the honest input. My daughter is the oldest and she bosses the boys about. They just do whatever they are told even as grown men lol. We all have a good relationship but the three of them have a great relationship. The flip side is I've put everyone but me first my whole life. Every choice I've ever made I have always thought about how my decisions will affect other people. While all my children, family and friends are living their dreams I've always made sure I'm the thoughtful wife (not now obviously) and mother. I'm nearer 60 than I am 50 and I want to live some of my own dreams now. I don't want to leave this world not having done anything for me. My kids are each the glue that holds their own families together now

  14. Quit day is 04/04. I have cut down, I was on 40 plus a day. Part of the reason. Is my teeth! I've had a lot of problems dental wise. Then the dentist said he likes smokers as the damage caused to teeth keeps him employed. Was news to me but it seems it's true. I don't know why I never thought of it. Anyhow thanks for the support. It will help. I've decided not to wait but to start my quit tomorrow. Why wait?

  15. Welcome aboard steveo, there's lots of members, me included, who were long term smokers so if we can do it so can you Use us however you need to to support you along the way. Post an SOS if you feel yourself caving to a crave and let us help you through it. Reading posts, supporting others, celebrating achievements and socializing really helped me keep my mind off my misery so take a look around at the various boards

  17. Jo, I know you did not deliberately forget me. I don't know how you keep track of us all. I will be sure to let you know when I need celebrating. Actually, that could be every day because I am a rockin hot nonsmoker (stretching it a bit with the "hot") lol.

  18. Glad you are giving quitting another go, never give up! You will definately enjoy your hill climbing more, once you have quit, and your lungs start to heal. I was the same walking up hills, its so much better now, and breathing becomes easier. You will come to love your new life. All the best, and post on here lots, it really helps in the early days. Good that your kids are with you on this too.

  20. For Nancy Mental Balloons Posted by gonfishn21 on 16 January 2015 - 06:17 PM As I'm now chasing the tweenie label, and have been thinking a lot about the concerns I have had regading No Man's Land, its got me thinking again. As most of you know, that means I'm going to ramble. Although I am not one that needs a lot of kudos, it seems that it is a necessary part of this process for a while. We make it through day 1 HURRAH!!!!!!!!!! We make it through hell week HURRAY!!!! Heck week over, " I feel better" HURRAy!! Two weeks, wow, learning to get through the craves, HURRay! Three weeks, can be around my friends and family without committing a felony, HURray Four weeks, nerves under control, waistband a little tight, not bad, HUrray Five weeks, walking, eating right, digestion shut down, but not smoking, Hurray Six weeks, no craves, no moods, no smoking, digestion shut down, HUH? Seven to eight weeks, no one wants to know but you, how you are doing. By the way, my digestion is shut down! They really stopped wanting to hear weeks ago, you just kept talking about it. You can see it in their eyes when you walk up. They probably have a pool about how long it will take you to bring it up. Or even worse, the day your digestion works! Yeah, wow woot woot yippee, big deal. Hello No Man's Land' How am i going to keep going with this? I need to bring my own ballons to the party. I know my friends and family care, but they dont get it. Even as firm as I have been since day one, this is one of the hardest things I have ever done. I know it, thats all that matters. As i reach the little milestones ahead, I need to be the one who says HURRAY!!!!!. I need to be the one who acknowledges the accomplishments. Afterall, in the end, I made the decision to quit, I made it through hell week, heck week, and i am the one who may never digest food again. I need to remind myself everyday, how much I have accomplished, BEFORE I have a chance to get weak. In that way, I can stay ahead, be ready to face any challenge with a strong defense. Smoking is no longer an option for me. Smoking is just something I used to do. I control my actions, and smoking is a choice. I choose not to smoke, even if I never digest food again. I found a website the other day, that actually teaches you HOW TO SMOKE. I couldn't believe it. It takes you through lighting it, drawing on it, how it feels.......Holy Crap I was feeling it!!!!! Two flipping months into this, and I was feeling it, and then I knew. I had to make mental ballons and carry them with me at all times. Everyday is a celebration, everyday needs reminders, and everyday has its challenges. There is no one here, that can not do it. I'm not special. I'm just going to carry my own balloons. Just sayin, Gon

  21. Congratulations @Wantsit for being 5 Months Smoke Free. Well done Wantsit. What a nice base you have built to grow your quit from. Its great to see you in the NOPE thread and around the boards sharing your support with others. Would love to hear how you celebrated this milestone.

  22. I think it takes immense courage to reach out and ask for help, perhaps even moreso in the later days of the quit. People expect to hear a lot of SOSes from those in the first days and weeks of a quit, but sometimes people need help months--even years--down the line. Life gets hard. Curveballs get thrown. And we are addicts for life, so we will need a little extra boost to get through the hard times. Kudos on you for asking for help. I'm sorry I missed this when it was first posted, but I'm glad to see you using the board. It works!

  23. Oh Mona, everyone's quit is different. It is not just about stopping smoking but also an emotional roller coaster. Some days you have the strength to help others but sometimes, you need to concentrate on yourself. I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for the unconditional support I have received here. The stronger you get, the more you are able to give back. I am so glad you are starting your quit. I hope to be able to help you through your journey.

  24. G’day Chicken noodles got my vote in the winter regardless of a cold or not! I manned up today and got my flu shot. Really impressed with my new Doc he’s really keeping an eye on me. He was the one who insisted I have one and organised it. It’s usually me that asks for it!

  25. Congratulations there, uh...who were we talking about again? I forgot. Just kidding. Congratulations Linda. You've built a rock-solid quit for yourself and are helping show the way for others. Just keep doing what you're doing and that epic lido deck celebration will be here before you know it.

  28. Welcome aboard Steveo, glad to have you along on this journey. There is much here to learn and help you dive in to find out more. Also remember to go to the "NOPE Pledge" page each day, it really does help!!!

  29. @Mona Welcome to Day1 of your quit!!! Day 1 for me too. If you feel grouchy, try some physical exercise. It will be difficult and you will run out of breath. So take it slow, but do try it. Its a great way to start getting fit and to get some angst out. Will also help you build confidence. Also, as many people here will suggest, some breathing will help whenever the urge to smoke arises. Watch Joel's videos.

  31. Thank you for posting an SOS, MLMR. You have too good of a quit to throw away and you know you would be miserable if you did light back up. As far as feeling normal again, life as a smoker isn't normal. Re-adjusting to a smoke-free life can take a lot of effort and anxiety but you are much better living the normal life of not smoking cigarettes. Feel free to post an SOS anytime you need. You did great in fighting through this.

  32. Our 2016 quitters are the butt kickers. 2017 we have the Smoke Busters, 2015 are known as the Badashes and 2014, The Avengers. I don't know what happened to the 2018 members not having a name but it's never too late. So 2019 quitters, are you guys going to unite with a team name?

  33. I couldn't deal with the spiders and snakes there. My kids are in their late twenties and thirties so have full lives off their own. I will keep my house here so I can come home whenever I like. If I moved to say Scotland it would take them 7 hours to drive up to see me. If I move abroad it would take less time so I'm almost closer being in another country lol

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
