September 15, 201411 yr A week before my 14 year old daughter was set to start high school we ended up in the ER with what turned out to be a UTI. 2 days before school was to start we were back in the ER to have more extensive tests that revealed a cyst the size of a grapefruit on one of her ovaries. The plan was to try and shrink it using birth control pills. She was put on restrictions because the cyst is so large one false move could cause it to twist and that would cut off the blood supply and the ovary would die. We had to change her schedule at school removing her from PE and she had to remove herself from the swim team she had joined. Last night we ended up back in the ER because she was bleeding and in a lot of pain. The ultra sound shows that the cyst is not shrinking at all but it has started to Hemorrhage. We are now going to have to schedule surgery. I know that these cysts are pretty common, not common to be so large, but they are routine surgery. I am scared to death! I have never had surgery before but I have to send my baby girl into an operating room. I sat last night in the ER thinking about a cigarette for the first time in I don't know how long :( I then realized I would have to leave my baby girl alone in ER if I wanted to smoke. I suddenly became overcome with guilt remembering standing outside the ER smoking when my son broke his wrist. I left him alone so I could smoke. I am currently going through the scariest thing I have ever dealt with as a parent and as hard as this is I will not smoke. Thanks to everyone for being here when I need some reassurance. I know if I can get through this I can get through anything.
September 15, 201411 yr aww bonnie this is sad to hear i am so sorry for you and your daughter you are so right that smoking wont change a darn thing and you would have to leave your daughter in her scariest time best you both just hug each other xxx I have cysts on my ovaries but not that large, so I can only imagine the pain she is in although scared I bet she just wants the operation and be pain free you post and vent here as much as need hun we are all there with you holding your hand in a difficult time you are all in my thoughts and prayers xxxx

September 15, 201411 yr Oh, Bonnie, I am so sorry to read this...you must be scared to death. It may be routine to the doctors...but it never feels routine when it is a loved one, especially a child. Will pray for strength and healing for you and your daughter, and skill and wisdom for the surgeon. So glad you realized a cigarette would only separate you from your daughter, and not solve a thing. We've had too many years of cigarettes being our "go to" solution for everything. Stay strong for your daughter, and know that we are here for you!

September 15, 201411 yr Sorry to hear this about your daughter! You have every right to be scared and upset as a parent! But please take comfort in modern medicine, this is a common procedure, done all the time. And you need to be strong for your daughter, she needs you strong now more then ever! Show her your strength, just like the strength you have shown us and her in your quit! A cigarette don't care and will not help you, but your friends here will!
September 15, 201411 yr Awww Bonnie, bless you and your daughter, always impossible to accept we cannot fix our babies. What is normal for a surgeon and we'd accept for ourselves is not so for a child. So no wonder the thought came to you, I am so pleased it left again knowing you can't leave her alone. They always want us close no matter what age. Sending healing and strength for you both my love!! Please know venting here is perfectly ok, get it out rather then bottle it up. Have you spoken to the actual surgeon, quite often they can really put our minds at rest that we are putting a baby in capable hands. I think depending on personality of course, the more informed you are the more in control and therefore calmer you get. Don't panic that you reflex thought that hun, it's kinda a knee jerk reaction and simply a trigger you haven't faced before. Once you have it will be done and dusted, don't give it head space - focus on your lovely baby as I know you will be xx

September 15, 201411 yr Bonnie, I'm so sorry that you and your daughter have to go through this! Poor little kid. I don't know if this helps, but I have had 3 abdominal laproscopic surgeries over the years. They none of them were particularly difficult. Very small incisions that heal quickly and leave hardly any scar. The hardest part is the first 2 or 3 days after surgery when your abdominal muscles hurt like you got punched in the gut. That's because the doctor sometimes injects CO2 into the abdomen to inflate it so they can see and move around more easily. The inflation can stretch the muscles. But that only hurts when you try to sit up or something-- it doesn't hurt all the time and it goes away in a day or two. So based on my experience, laproscopic abdominal surgery is more frightening than painful or debilitating. Let us know how things go for you and your daughter.
September 15, 201411 yr I will make you feel better. When I was 17 years old I had an ovarian cyst rupture and bleed for several days before I went to the er for severe abdominal pain. It bled long enough for my appendix to become infected and they had to do emergency surgery for the cysts and the appendix. I made it out safe with only a 1 inch scar on my stomach and I went on to have 2 kids so I didn't have any problems from the cysts either. She will be fine. I am giving you positive thoughts for a speedy recovery.
September 16, 201411 yr Bonnie, sending healing and calming thoughts to you and your daughter. ...it seems to me that it is not unusual to think about smoking in a situation like this. This is how we always dealt with stress. Of course it is not going to help. Think of me standing in front of the hospital in a gown with an iv smoking right before I quit and how ashamed I felt when people saw me and how scared I was that I had heart problems. No need to be addicted again like this.

September 16, 201411 yr Awh Bonnie soo very sorry to hear about your daughter, poor thing must be in agony and mammy must be climbing the walls with worry, nothing worse than seeing your child in pain, thinking of you both, well done on not smoking, no point anyway as you said you would be no use to her if you were outside smoking and then coming back in stinking, daughter, doctors, nurses stomach turning from the stench x Any update??
September 16, 201411 yr Author Thanks everyone! I know this is common but it is still so scary. When they first diagnosed it was through a CT so I did not see it. But Sunday night they did ultrasound and I watched. Seeing that huge thing inside of her made it so much more real. It looks just like a grapefruit sitting in there. Its HUGE!! This thing is 10x8 If it were 10x10 they would have scheduled surgery when they first diagnosed it.because that is just too big! This is on her ovary but it is resting on her bladder making it very hard for her to control things down there if you know what I mean. It is heartbreaking watching her struggle with this. We see her OBGYN today at 3:45 to decide our course of action. Thanks again for all the prayers and vibes.
