December 31, 201411 yr First,I will apologize for all the errors that are sure to follow... I've got a killer buzz! Percocet (2)and a nice shot of morphine! I think my back surgery went well.. The Dr. Said it went as expected, except my spine is much n arrower than expected..he said I could thank Mom and Dad for that... However..because they fit me into a spot that was a cancelation.. I talked to my neurosureon on Friday and was able to get me a spot for today (Tues.)..I got up at 4am..left the house at 5am....had a 1hr drive to the hospital arrived by 6 because I had to do my pre surgery tests...chest x-rays,blood work,EKG, and a others. Surgery was running late..I got in around 1pm (11:30 scheduled).... Finally got into a room at 10:00 pm... Wife was livid..they did a poor job of keeping her informed... While waiting for the actual surgery a different Dr came in to talk to me about the other tests I had run... It seems the blood work shows I may have sugar issue...the numbers were high (after fasting since 8pm he night before)..IIRC. .. She said it was around 120... Gonna run more tests tomorrow...BUT... The BAD NEWS is that the Chest x-Ray show ealy signs of COPD....wonder how that happened? Gonna talk more about that tomorrow as well.. Bummer. :(
December 31, 201411 yr Author Hey Bat...on a different note.. My 2nd oldest daughter lives in Bellevue (Oh)..they have quite a yard there, ans someone lacal has quite a museum of vintage trains... When I get that way, I will try and get some pics if your interested...gonna see if I can find a link for it...
December 31, 201411 yr Joe, I'm glad that your surgery went well. You can now look forward to soon living without pain for a change! You may not have diabetes (too soon to tell) but even if you do, you caught it early (120 fasting is not that bad) so you should be fine. The most worrisome is the COPD. Thank God that you quit smoking already! That will help a lot. And, although they say that COPD is not reversible, I clearly remember a forum member saying that she had early COPD. When she quit smoking, her lung function tests started to improve until at the end of 2 years, her lung function was normal for her age. So don't be too freaked out. All in all I'd say that you are reasonably healthy and are taking the smart steps to stay that way for many years to come.
December 31, 201411 yr Hey Joe. Great that the op went well. The other stuff? Well, don't prejudge it. As we age, we all have bits and pieces that are not perfect. But the lifestyle changes that you have made are HUGE and made a massive difference already. Keep smiling Joe!
December 31, 201411 yr Hey Joe - happy to see you posting and even happier the op went well ! Don't stress re prelim results and take comfort knowing yOu have already made so many positive changes - you will easily cope with what is require !
December 31, 201411 yr Joe my friend, I am gutted for how you must be feeling. Early COPD can stay early for literally years though hun. Fingers crossed they give you some solid information as it always seems a bit airy fairy to me. My Mum did a COPD club, where they try and get your lung health improved via fitness, proper breathing etc and you wouldn't have known an issue with most of them. The ones who were suffering, like my mum, were still smoking. So pleased that part of you is done now and we can all concentrate our thoughts and prayers on you for sure. I am pleased you got the back surgery sorted, constant pain is not the one. Your poor wife though. Blimey mate, all in all not a fab day ey. Sending love and strength for you Joe. x
December 31, 201411 yr Hi joe....nice to hear your op went well...I don't know much about sugars and stuff so I carnt help there.... But crys seems to think its not bad ..this is good also... C.o.p.d....sounds like you are in the very early stages........stopping smoking has stopped it in its tracks... Hugs to you joe....take it easy my friend.... Xx
December 31, 201411 yr One thing at a time Joe, concentrate on recovering from your op and worry about the rest later. You've already done the best thing you can re COPD and as I understand it, blood sugar things can be managed one way or another. Wishing you a speedy recovery, but enjoy the 'buzz' while you can :D
December 31, 201411 yr Glad the surgery went well Joe, shame about the findings on your chest x ray. Although at least now you no longer smoke it might not get too bad? Have no knowledge of the condition but fingers crossed it stays manageable Joe. Thank goodness you stopped smoking!
December 31, 201411 yr Glad your surgery went well......it is actually a good thing that the other things were found incidentally, hopefully the blood glucose levels can be diet controlled with no or little medication. Take care of yourself and give yourself time to heal up.
December 31, 201411 yr Glad the surgery went well Joe. Sorry about the COPD, glad you have quit now and this will give you further motivation to stay quit. Rest up and feel better soon :)
December 31, 201411 yr Aww Joe, sorry to hear this... We will be here for you anytime you need us! Looking on the bright side, imagine how much worse it could have been if you were still smoking! Wishing you a speedy recovery from your surgery!
December 31, 201411 yr So happy your surgery went well. Keeping my fingers crossed for you on the other issues. Hoping you are feeling better soon Joe!
December 31, 201411 yr Glad your surgery went well! Sorry about your other problems. Hope you will be up feeling great soon!
December 31, 201411 yr im a glass half full kinda chick joe, when your back heals you can do more activities and feel better than you ever did, hopefully they will sort your blood out and COPD wont get any worse speedy recovery joe and go easy on the meds, but if you start seeing rainbows and unicorns please post ;) xxxx
December 31, 201411 yr Author speedy recovery joe and go easy on the meds, but if you start seeing rainbows and unicorns please post ;) xxxx Yep...the unicorns and rainbows were everywhere last night :) But...they are not coming around much today...must mean I am feeling better. Actually I get to go home today...I've been discharged, just waiting to see the nurse who was the messenger of good news. Lol My numbers on the blood sugars are on my chart and its a 5.2 ...I guess the range is 5-to-12 ..as long as the n umbels are in the 5's it should be able to be controlled by diet...which is good news...how-ever, more tests need to be done..I don't beleive those numbers..I get a health screening every year at work and just had one that includes a full spectrum of blood work, and I passed EVERY catagory with flying colors..on the other hand, I have never watched what I eat...I have a high metabalism..I. May have gained 20lbs when I quit smoking/retired (I blame both. Lol) BUT..I eat anything I want, whenever I want..the richer the desert...and the more often, the better..lol...I am blaming it on the holidays....but The COPD tihing.. I can't blame that on the holidays...just stupidity..The Dr. Hasn't come up and talked about it yet, but I really don't question the fact that something bad may have come from 35years of putting crap in my mouth and setting it on fire. I also believe She will say that it is in the early stages, because I have never had any reason to think otherwise...I have never had bronchidus and rarely had chest colds....and never had the "morning smokers cough".. I guess that's why it caught me so off guard... I am sTarting to ramble again...the last round of percost must be taking hold....lol... Anyway..thanks for the encouragement.. And for the record, it was amazing how much better my back felt when I woke up...don't get m wrong...plenty of "surgery" pain, but the familiar back and leg pain was instantly gone....let's hope it stays that way when the prescription runs out...lol Again, thanks for the kind words of encouragment
January 1, 201511 yr Glad you made out ok with your surgery! So sorry about the other news :( It's shocking to hear stuff like that when you were not expecting it. I think they can both be managed, or I hope they are easily managed. xx
January 1, 201511 yr COPD- Cleveland Oppressed (by) Pittsburgh Defense- you've had it long time from watching us pounce you. Here Ohio is in the running for the summer picnic...so you don't even have leaving Ohio for a little bit to look forward to. Tough luck. 120 isn't high or bad when I seen the medics check it. Weight is big issue with border line. Got to get on that burrito diet or have sgt run by and teach you how to tie running shoes (think his are Velcro being from Ohio too) If you need some help lifting something, call the dog, sounds like he knows your area too
January 2, 201511 yr hugs to you Joe!!!!!!! ((((((((((((((((((((((((JOE)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
January 2, 201511 yr (((Joe))) so glad the surgery went well. I agree with others, wait for results on additional tests before becoming too concerned. I went in for my annual check up this week, ended up having three different rounds of blood work, much anxiety, only to find out everything was okay!
January 2, 201511 yr So sorry for the not so good news. Hope very much it won't really be that bad. K
