November 2, 201510 yr I am at a loss....but afraid our beloved board is dying a slow death as people drift away...is there anything we can do?

November 2, 201510 yr Author share the facebook page and if you are on google...share there too...or twitter....or instagram....share share share I shared on Facebook...how do we share on Google?
November 3, 201510 yr Honestly a name change. People Google quit smoking to find info. The TRain part needs dropped and quit put in somewhere.
November 3, 201510 yr Honestly a name change. People Google quit smoking to find info. The TRain part needs dropped and quit put in somewhere. I don't know much about SEO, but this is a good point. Here are some additional ideas running around my head: Cannibalism: several quit boards are almost completely dead, for various reasons, and yet they attract new quitters by chance - I quit on one such board myself, though it no longer exists. I've even seen other members warn newbies away due to low participation, recognizing they'd be better off elsewhere. Maybe we could approach those boards, or at least post to them with their permission, to let them know we're here. Advertising: if someone put together a simple graphic with our address (maybe as a QR code) folks could print them off and maybe stick a few up outside local smoke shops, or wherever. Youtube: how many more people know about Joel since he started putting up short and sweet topical videos? Syndication: sites like BuzzFeed, Reddit etc are happy to host free content. If we wrote up some of our wisdom into snappy submissions, they might get a wider audience. K, that's it for now.
November 3, 201510 yr I am guilty of slacking off on posts and posting threads due to my 2 year mark coming soon and I was going to slink off quietly, maybe us old phartes could post more threads in the quit smoking discussion topic even if its once a week or something to keep things moving along nicely and various, also to encourage newbies and tweenies to post more the more active the board the more people will want to join in good points from above and thread from nancy but too cold for topless selfies HN`s and all that :)
November 3, 201510 yr This is sad but true.... How do you recrute ?.....I'm at a loss. When I first quit...I hung on to the board with everything I had.... Maybe i was just more desperate..... Thanks Nancy for bringing this forward..
November 3, 201510 yr If I had access to materials I'd wallpaper a few places where I know potential freedom seekers abound. word of mouth , NPR? , have a booth at conferences related to health or quitting in various locations world wide .... I think the human to human encounter is underrated in today's culture.
November 3, 201510 yr I share posts from the QT when I can but people must be ready, Sunny is right I've been on boards where only 1,5 % succeeds many fail and disappear that's why most bords are abandond. This is the first SUCCESFULL bord and only one I know, ended up here when I got invited thru pm from 'The Other Place' I had NO faith I could do it but I saw people succeed and members I call friends now believed in me and saw potentional and strenght, which I had noclue I had. I'm grateful to have found this place, friends and inner strenght. I THINK almost every smoker wants to quit but doesn't believe he CAN SUCCEED. people here are or were educated and I believe every smoker can quit with the right tools. This bord has the info, the people and commitment and I hope people won't leave. We see new people arrive and need or try to stand around them. Let's not only care for our only quit but also for the new quiters. if that makes sense.
November 3, 201510 yr I'm no expert but I'm helping with the PR over on the other forum I deal with, the twitter side of things. Social media is definitely a powerful tool these day, twitter can help you advertise for free but you do have to put the hours in.
November 3, 201510 yr Basic computer skills won't know half of the social media sites but even a dummy like me can google search. We aren't on the radar when I type quit smoking And still not there when I type forum. If we aren't found using the simplest means....how is anything harder going to work? Time to earn those moderator and administrators titles.
November 4, 201510 yr We are on the first page if you search for quit smoking board or quit smoking forum. We are on FB and Twitter and I know we've advertised before. I know some forums are driving people there but not sure how they do it, except for the ones that are selling something as well. Good topic. Lots of great ideas.
November 4, 201510 yr Hopefully with that smoke out day coming & of course the New Yr quitters should get things a moveing again.

Time to earn those moderator and administrators titles. Oh this is a first lol....But I do have to agree with Bakon to a certain extent.... Everyone knows I am a I pad idiot....just about get by....so yes....it has to be simple for some folks.... I too hope new year quitters find thier way here....x
November 4, 201510 yr I really should put more effort in... Have been slacking recently. Will try harder, and let you all know if I think of anything constructive!
November 4, 201510 yr A few times, I wished I had business cards to drop near a smoker or hand to someone. Hard thing sometimes is that unless someone is asking for help, they get mad if you suggest it. :(
November 4, 201510 yr Hi, Newbie here sneaking in. Just to say I'm not sure how I ended up here instead of 'other' boards. I use my phone to look around and other boards look identical to this one on my phone. (I admit to being desperate to ask what happened on the 'other' board.....!) I really like this board because the numbers are fewer so you can get to know the posters quicker. It I confess to looking elsewhere and joining another big board as this one is quiet with very few posts. In fact, other than games and exercise, it's really pretty quiet. I don't really know how to improve traffic though other than making sure you're at the top of google searches? I love the quit train. It's been a real help to me. X
November 5, 201510 yr I appreciate the small population. I also appreciate the low traffic. I feel close® to members here and I get a sense of accomplishment upon reading all the new posts (knowing I finished reading everything). Though, admittedly, I've very little internet forum experience to go on.
November 5, 201510 yr I see us still ranking high in the search engines, first page for most. I'll find the post with the original stats and see where we stack up now. :) I appreciate the topic but can assure you, we're not dying a slow death even though newbies are not tripping over each other to get in. Having said that, this rests on my shoulders as my time has been very limited the past many months and will look more into it. The infrastructure is in place to handle a TON of traffic and there are times that we're slammed with people reading but not joining. I too do this on many sites because if I can read without having to take the time to join, I do it. The name has nothing to do with it. quitnet comes up at the top of many searches and no mention of smoking. The name is not how search engines (especially Google) ranks sites. It can have something to do with it, but there are other things far more important than that. Google quit smoking message board or quit smoking forum (which are the two top searches for those quitting smoking) and we're on the first page every single day and depending on the particular day, anywhere from #1 to #4 on the first page. As you can see, it's not in the same. :) Great idea about the business cards and one that was brought up quite some time ago. I can have them made, but I would need to an idea of how many people would actually use them, post them in coffee shops, train stations or anywhere else. What people see when they first pull up the site is probably a better indicator of the lack of newbies. This is where we need to be creative and I'm all ears. :)
