September 21, 20214 yr Way to go, Doreen. I have yet to work out today. Been busy taking care of business. But I will… Edited September 21, 20214 yr by Katgirl
September 21, 20214 yr As promised, I did get my workout in, yesterday. Because it was so much later in the day, than usual, I took it a little easier, emphasis on little. I didn’t want to risk having trouble sleeping, which can be an issue for me, on a good day. I did complete 2 full miles, at my normal speed, but with just a slight incline, which mimics outdoor walking. So, 3.5 mph with a 1% incline. I did have occasional bursts of running at 4 mph. I seem to be incapable of really taking it easy. I am such a driven person, when pursuing a goal. I know that can be a good personality trait, but it can also be a challenge. It’s hard for me to just take it easy, even when Common sense dictates that it’s the best course of action. I’m just pleased, that I didn’t skip my workout….
September 22, 20214 yr Tweaked my program a bit this week. I wanted to work in the four fundamental lifts, at least four strongman lifts, and finish up each workout with a bit of conditioning work. Here is what I came up with: Monday and Thursday: Deadlifts, Bench Press, Sandbag Bearhug Carries, Sandbag Over-the-Shoulder Throws, Sled Pulls. Finish up with fifteen minutes of steady-state rowing on the Concept2. Tuesday and Friday: Squats, Overhead Press, Sandbag Get-Ups, Sled Push. Finish up with four rounds of boxing on the heavy bag.
September 22, 20214 yr I am going to start working harder at actual running. I feel I’ve been a bit afraid to go all out. So today, I will tweak my workout, and see how it goes. Yesterday, I did my usual 2 miles at a significant incline and constant 3.5 mph speed, with several bursts of running at an increased speed. It took 39 minutes total, including my warm up. John bought me a 65 inch TV, so I can see it easily from the treadmill, which is nearly 30 feet away. We have a large Great Room, where both are located. Wish me luck….😊
September 24, 20214 yr Well, I am two days in to a new routine. I speedwalk for 2 minutes, increase the speed by 1/2 mph, then jog for one minute, and repeat for 2 miles, all the while with a slight incline. It is much harder than what I was doing. Jogging motion is much more taxing than walking. I had to rest for a few moments twice, or at 10 minute intervals. The mind was willing, but the flesh a bit weak. Maybe I am expecting too much from this 70 year body. I will keep it up, and hopefully see some improvement in stamina.
September 24, 20214 yr @Katgirl, Starting with a walk/ run is pretty normal and is probably better than trying to do all run. Running is very hard on the body and best to ease into it. Lots of info on walk/ run if you look and hope you're stretching before and after
September 24, 20214 yr OK, I will play for 36days till the end of Oct, then evaluate if I want to continue. I decided I'm far enough into my quit to handle watching my diet. When I commit, I commit, so it will be daily. And I'm going to add my diet and wt cause I had been gaining before I quit and am increasing quickly since my quit. Exercising daily will be a breeze because I have not missed a single day in about 3.5yrs. And I do not count anything productive as exercise (only for me, not someone else), but I do count sports I'm involved in. I primarily due HIIH workouts (high intensity interval hiking) which is just a name I made up because it sounds cool to tell people I get HIIH in the woods everyday. Basically I hike from 1-3miles and do exercises at intervals. Some freebody like pushups, situps, burpees, etc. Some wt lifting using logs, rocks, and brake rotors (hid about 6 of these in the woods). Some are MovNat type ground exercises or just climbing on things. My only rule is exercise everyday, a little or lot, does not matter intensity, duration, or type. If I'm throwing up sick, I still do one free body squat. It does nothing for the body, but everything to keep the mind programmed. So each day I'll let you know what I ate, what my exercise was, and what my wt was at start of day. Goal is to drop from current 179 to 174 by Oct 31. Thats about a pound a week which is reasonable. My ideal wt (the wt I feel most energetic at is 168. I know some people say you should not weigh daily cause it causes so much stress. I disagree as long as you have the ability to just look at the trend and not get bent out of shape on daily fluctuations.
September 24, 20214 yr Wow @JustinHoot99 You do commit and have a great plan in action!! Good for you. Staying that busy will help with the not smoking. Glad your sharing your progress with us. Keep up the good work.
September 24, 20214 yr Well done Justin .... Keep your eye on the prize 🙂..... I am more fit now than I was 20 Years ago ..... Quitting smoking is a journey .....putting that last one out ....is the start to a much healthier life .. Looking forward to following your Journey ....
September 24, 20214 yr i'm baack Went for a run in downtown San Antonio yesterday and passed The Alamo
September 24, 20214 yr I think I’m just too damn old for what I’m doing. I repeated my workout of the last two days, and man, it was hard. I had to rest several times, but did finish. So, 2 full miles in 34 minutes, running 1/3 of the time, and speed walking 2/3, all up a slight incline. Sounds pretty easy, right? Well, I was huffing and puffing, and sweating my ass off. I will continue on, though. Why? Because I am THAT stubborn, that’s why.

September 25, 20214 yr I wouldn't use the word on a treadmill unless it was raining or too cold or something ... and then I find myself clock-watching. Really, the love word comes from exploring the outdoors and nature - hikes, rides, runs. New routes are important - it gets hard running around the block. So I guess the love comes with conditions

So I guess the love comes with conditions I like the treadmill. I can see exactly how fast I’m going, and how far I have to go. I can set goals more easily, and the Ifit app saves my stats. It was always my favorite machine, at my gym. With Covid, I do not want to frequent a gym, or exercise wearing an N-95 mask, which is the only mask I will wear, when needed. What I don’t love is the work that goes into working out. It is difficult, perhaps more so, at my age, than for younger folks….😊
September 25, 20214 yr @Katgirl MovNat is the brand name for something called natural movement. Natural movement has a lot of philosophy behind it that I don't pay much attention to. But it has 2 parts. The first part can be done inside and involves a lot of stretching and ground movements. Similar to yoga in some ways but yoga seems to be more of a stretch and hold where this is more of a flow. You can just learn the basics or get quite involved in the indoor portion. But I think the first part is just a precursor for the second part which is where natural movement comes in. Natural movement exercising is very similar to what you would see if you watched kids play. They run, jump on and off things, roll on the ground, climb anything and everything, balance on things, lift and throw things, etc. Natural movement is very similar with emphasis on doing this outside, preferably in nature, like a forest or park, but it can be done in urban areas as well. For instance, I do my HIIH workout using a wooded frisbee course. I have at least 30 activities I can choose from and usually select 10-12 to do on my 1-2mile hike. A typical workout might me be walking to a large stone I have set by a tree, picking it up, lifting and throwing overhead, picking up again and repeating 10-15times. Then maybe jog for a bit and do some pushups or burpees, then move to a wall of posts sticking out of the ground that serve as a back stop for the frisbees, climbing up on them and balance walking across the top of them. I might do some ground exercises like tripod extensions, log flipping, or tripod vaulting on a tree that fell but is about 3' off the ground. Maybe a steep hill climb where I have to grab roots to help pull my way up the hill. Basically, you are moving the entire body in a large variety of planes, and working on strength, cardio, balance, and flexibility. I do this in every season from hot humid summer to the most freezing days Illinois sees. A lot of people who start out in natural movement wind up progressing into Parkour as well, at least some basic Parkour. Parkour can be done at any age, just taylored for what your age and abilities are. At 60, my parkour work is mainly vaulting over low objects like park benches using the tripod vault or jumping from one low object to another. In natural movement, we believe you don't stop playing because you get old, you get old because you stop playing.

Went out and bought a bunch of salad and fruit stuff I'll be needing this week. Your diet does not seem to be any healthier than mine. I had a small portion of raspberry danish and coffee for breakfast, Chile Relleno and a half cheese enchilada for lunch, Tri tip, mashed potatoes and corn for dinner. Portions were all small. I do have my eye on a half maple donut for later. Today I increased my incline dramatically, but did not run. My knees were feeling a bit sore, when I started running, so I backed off. My calorie burn increased to 300, with the increased incline. My speed varied from 3.5-3.8 mph. I did complete 2 miles in 34 minutes.
September 26, 20214 yr @Katgirl Yeah, right now my diet is way off. As I get further into my wt loss mode, you will see it become extremely boring w/ pretty much the same foods at the same time everyday. Tonight will be my last nite for that bowl of ice cream I have every nite. I generally lose wt pretty quickly once I get going on the diet side. Did I see that you run outdoors as well?
September 26, 20214 yr Start date 9/24 start wt 179.0 goal by 11/1 under 174.0 3 days in a row Current - 9/26 - wt 178.8. Exercise - 9 hole frisbee golf 20 - In this workout, I simply walk 9 of the 18 frisbee golf fairways and do 20 pushups at each basket for a total of 180. Eating Breakfast - 2 strips bacon, banana Lunch - 5 small pieces of deer sausage and cheese Dinner - Grilled salmon, large salad Snacks - 1 soda, bowl of ice cream later. Starting to dial in the diet. Last thing I need to do is get rid of the bowl of ice cream in the evening. So did everyone exercise their azz off, or use it to dust the couch today?
