  1. Hello everyone! I’m Arynn! I’m 24 years old and I have been smoking since I was 16. The past few months I’ve been having money problems because I’m chronically ill and have a lot of health provlems. I was forced to quit and I was bitter! My dad passed away this last May and when I was born he quit cold turkey immediately. I thought about this and decided I owe him this back by quitting. So, I’m currently 90 hour smoke free and I feel like I’m going to die. I’ll post more about more about me and my symptoms and story in another topic! I look forward to meeting new people.

  2. I quit (cold turkey) because I woke one morning and realized I was just tired of smoking. It was a spontaneous decision I made, without ever really planning to quit before the day I did. I was a smoker of 30 years, 2 packs a day in the last years. It is easy to quit smoking when you do not want to smoke any more. And if you have a difficult time with your quit, it is education about smoking and quitting that will make you not want to smoke any more. Cristóbal

  3. How did they diagnose this? Were you sick or having other unexplained symptoms and they found that? Without getting too long into it, I think doctors will tell people about anything just to get them on meds. Isn't like the good ol days when if you didn't smoke, drink, drugs, ate healthy, and exercised, they would give you a clean bill of health. No, today they WILL find something just to upsell meds. Perhaps a second opinion is in order?

  7. Hello Tyme2B, Smoking did not change in any way the outcome of the events that you used as excuse to smoke again. It did not make 50 emails, become 0. It did not make the 2 crying phone calls, become none. It did not make your mother's suicide threat, less severe or urgent. The only thing that you accomplished, was you used these events as excuses to threw away your precious new quit and freedom from slavery, and returned to the horror of active addiction. Now, who knows how long it may be before you find the courage and the desire to start a new quit. Many people do exactly what you do, smoke for years more in the "comfort" of the addiction, and then return to the quit smoking forums years later when they are diagnosed with a smoking related disease, and are forced to quit. Others, die before they can even make it back to a quit smoking forum. The words "dying of lung cancer", "amputation of feet and legs", "24 hour oxygen", cannot in any way describe the reality of the horrors of these diseases and conditions that can make the rest of your life become living hell until the day you die. Of course you can quit. You were not born with a cigarette in your mouth, were you? Of course not. Smoking is a acquired addiction, and it is simple to make it UN-aquired. The only thing that you need in order to quit smoking, is to make a commitment to yourself, to never take another puff. Any difficulties you may as you start your quit, are simply temporary noise in your life caused by a chemical addiciton with no intelligence as it goes to sleep, and are absolutely nothing compared to the horrors that have a high possibility of becoming your permanent reality, if you continue to smoke. The non-smoker that you want to be, you already are. You just need to remove the active addiction from your life. Once you do that, you will with time comfortably become the non-smoker that you used to be. Starting right in this moment, make that commitment. Now !!! And keep that commitment. Nothing more....and nothing less, is needed for your to get your sticky quit. Cristóbal

  9. So I have been diagnosed with gene related High cholesterol, there is a fancy medical term about but I cant be bothered with all that jargon, it inherited by one or both parents, basically I am fat on the inside! which I feel is unfair as I am quite active and eat quite healthily, apparently even if I just smelt lettuce all day my liver would produce high bad cholesterol :( So just diet and exercise wont cure it, so I am now on statins! So my advice is even if you are quite fit and healthy on the outside, it might be a good idea to get your bloods checked at least once a year! now wheres that lettuce!

  10. Well today was a major achievement. My car broke down on the way to work and I pulled in at the garage . 2 hour wait for recovery truck and managed not to go for the fags. Under normal circumastances this stress would have ruined my quit... not today though! Very happy

  11. I won’t give up the Quit Bat. I just have some obstacles to conquer first....but I promise I will be back...things are gradually falling into place so that I CAN pledge my commitment. I HATE the position I am in but I have been working on making things right for ME without compromising anyone else. I’ve accomplished a lot in a week. It’s MY turn...and I want it so much ?

  13. Hi I'm so sorry for the loss of your dad . My dad quit smoking too actually in my senior high school year . He passed of emphysema and HF . I would like to congratulate you for quitting . Your dad will be happy for you. Draw upon his strength . You can do this . You are not walking alone. You have found this great site to walk with you too . The support and info here will help you so much . Lots of things to do here as well to help you get through the rough times .. Yes it gets much easier . All you need to look after is today ok . Dont worry about tomorrow or what yesterday was .. just keep quit for today . There is always someone here .. so yes please post any time . I posted tons in the beginning to help me through . I cried buckets . How in the heck can one cry so much ? Well , I think they are called healing tears and I had a lot of healing to do . I like you smoked all the time and especially smoked to stuff down emotions . I too have struggled with many health issues and that's why I quit smoking . I was also so very sick . I decided I had no choice but to take smoking off the table... Just after I quit , I got my diagnosis but I had no choice left that's how bad my health was . I couldn't find another excuse to smoke .... every breath I took was effort . I wish I had quit at 23 because once I got a taste of how good it was to be smoke free I wished I had quit years before. I love being smoke free . I am very proud of you because have made such a great decision early in your life and I'm excited for you because being smoke free is going to give you opportunity and open doors . You can do this . You really can . I hope the drs will soon get to your diagnosis . I know that is frustrating and difficult but hang in there . The best thing you can do is quit smoking . Don't smoke ok , because every time you do it wakes up those cravings . You have to starve cravings if you don't feed them they learn to go away . Be patient with yourself . Even though you don't feel great about it you are doing great . Your confidence will grow . Hang in there. Just some ideas for you Distract , delay , share your feelings , drink lots of fluids , cinnamon helps with cravings as do oranges . Write or journal if that helps .and congratulate yourself often . Lots of times instead of it actually being a crave for a cig ask yourself if you are hungry angry , lonely or tired because maybe just a nap will help , or an orange , or phoning a friend or coming here may be just what you need to get through . Read read read as was already mentioned . You can do this .

I never thought quitting smoking would make me more stronger and give me more confidence in every aspect of my life... I find I deal with problems ,much more calmly with better results... I spent 5 decades thinking cigarettes were the answer...I was wrong....I can now deal with life.... On life's terms... Wouldn't change it for anything....

  20. The purple Lizard is right. It's so simple your mind just will not let you see it. I bet if you banged your head off the wall a few times every time your mind started making you think you needed a cigarette it would finally get the hint.

  21. I am the complete opposite. I've always been told after my yearly physical labs to keep doing what I'm doing and I tell them I eat like crap and don't exercise. The docs always shrug and say consider myself lucky good genes. Also I take no meds. I'm about 50 pounds overweight due to laziness and the love of food. 35 of those pounds I gained after quitting smoking. I don't mind though. My lungs feel great and I don't stink. So yes I will have another donut. Please and thank you

  23. Start running. Distance. Big. Miles. Seriously. Sarge went from "off the charts" high levels (triglycerides over 500, LDL over 250) to "below normal" when he started training for Marathons. HDL("good" Cholesterol) bumped from abysmal 15-18 to over 60+ He's convinced it has *nothing* to do with diet and *everything* to do with how much *strenuous* cardio exercise you get. EZPZ

  27. Yeah, I think exercise sub-forums are often quiet. My job is physical, moving stuff a lot and walking around a lot. Dodging the boss helps with reflexes. If it were not for my job, I would be in no shape to exercise. After i quit smoking my sense of smell and taste changed a bit and then again when I got sick because of a skin infection. Soda didn't taste the same so I pretty much dropped those. Milk started tasting good again. Candy bars started tasting super gross all the sudden so I dropped those and replaced it with apples and oranges. Yeah I know those have a lot of sugar but screw it. What the hell am I suppose to eat? Raw broccoli? For Tracey - Any sort of exercise you do is going to help. Especially walking dogs. They are constantly pulling faster than one cares to walk or run, plus having to jerk them away when they attempt to sniff someone's crotch, etc. You are no slouch

  29. hi Arynn, I am sorry for the loss of your father, he would be very proud of you quitting but don`t just do it for him do it for YOU, you derserve to be healthy and feel better, your body will feel out of whack for a while with symptoms you are not used to, the best thing in these early days are fresh air, moving however much you can, drinking plenty of water, juices, cut down on caffeine (without nicotine caffeine is doubled in strength for you now), breathing take slow deep breaths, long showers or baths and treat yourself to something nice. What you are going through at the moment is temporary just keep going through the fog and you will feel better.

  39. Good work, Tracey and Boo! My routine: Monday 1/2 hour elliptical Tuesday 45 minutes kick boxing Wednesday 1/2 hour elliptical Thursday 1/2 hour Zumba, yoga or elliptical Friday 1/2 hour Zumba + 45 minutes kick boxing Saturday 75 minutes dance aerobics Sunday rest or walking Would love to do strength training but herniated cervical disc makes that impossible. Kick boxing, that is non-contact but includes lots of reps of punching and kicking sequences and squats, leg work galore helps tremendously with toning of arms and legs and can be a great core workout if you focus on that area. Trying to make my 10000 steps every day but some days I don't quite get there if I'm at my desk too long (which is quite frequent these days) For me, the Psychological/mood and outlook enhancing benefits of working out exceed even the physical benefits. If I miss more than one day, I feel the difference right away

  40. I'm currently doing the 5/3/1 weightlifting program. I'm finishing up the second week of a four-week cycle. For supplemental exercises, I'm doing pull-ups and weighted carries (farmer's walk and suitcase carries). Weighted carries are awesome. I went through an eight-week phase where I focused primarily on running and boxing. I did some bodyweight exercises, but my strength work consisted primarily of weighted carries 4-5 times a week. After a two-month layoff, I actually saw my squat and deadlift numbers increase. Summation: weighted carries make you strong. I'm not running right now, but doing a good bit of rucking in preparation for a multi-day hike over the New Year holiday. Stay strong and keep moving folks.

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
