September 21, 201411 yr A bunch of my old friends got together tonight and keep posting about it on FB. I have an appt at 0830 tomorrow, so no way could I be out of town boozing it up with them. Nor do I really want to I guess. It is nice of them to say they miss me being there. I just had so much fun in college and wish right now I was back in time. Sometimes it is not that much fun to be grown up and responsible. Stupid problems right.
September 21, 201411 yr I had to take a test for a job, 25 years ago. went home at 8 pm on a Friday, at age 22, from a rocking party. I had a wife and kid, needed to be grown up. Today I make probably more than any two people at that party do. They are all old friends who still get together once a year and sometimes I have to work. Feel like I am missing out but then I look at what I have and thank God I went home.
September 21, 201411 yr Hi Ava- No, definitely not, "stupid problems," and these are things that are important to you. I've been out of school a long time and doing this life and responsible jazz a long time. I don't like the responsibilities and grown-up game too much, either. But, don't you change anything if you feel young or reflect back to that on the inside. There's a line in a movie and the woman (just middle aged) fears she is getting older, and the angel says to her, " Don't worry about that...you were born young and will always be young. It's all an inside job, Ava. I pray that you and me and the others who replied and feel the same way stay young forever ! :) Paul
September 21, 201411 yr I feel like this sometimes, and I have to laugh at myself... Yesterday I spent all day looking at antiques, at the garden centre, and working in the garden - was pretty rock'n'roll to be honest, lol!
September 21, 201411 yr Your as old as feel....I'm one of young 60 something......I'll never grow up....... I do what my kids do.....and they include me....knowing I would butt in anyways..... I play football and rugby with my grandson....go down slides with my granddaughter......they love it ..... This old gal won't go down with out a fight.....if I see a tree role.....I've just gotta swing on it.....l.ol.....
September 21, 201411 yr When I was in college and lived in the dorms, a friend of mine had a class with me. One day he wanted us to move to some different seats and I told him no. He said "You're like a ******* rock! You never budge on anything! You're like an old man!" lol I was set in my ways back when I was 20. Then I got a part-time job in the ICU of the local hospital and became friends with another orderly and we got an apartment together. My idea of a great weekend was drinking coffee and listening to Gordon Lightfoot on my turntable on Friday night following up by squirrel hunting on Saturday. Saturday night I would go out to the local establishments with him but when upon returning home in the wee hours of the morning, I would crank up my turntable and listen to my Lightfoot albums. Sunday was followed up with coffee and reading while listening to my albums. He constantly told me that I was like a 40 year old man. Here I am, in my 40's and not much has changed. Still listening to Gordon Lightfoot, think albums provide the best sound quality (they really do with a high end system), still drinking coffee and still wear the same flannel shirts that I did way back in college over 20 years ago whilst walking around in the woods. I had my fun times in college for the first two years in the dorms and then I ditched the bar scene for real livin', stomping around in the woods and listening to folk music from the 1970's while enjoying a crappy cup of coffee. That's about the only thing that's changed; I now only drink the perfectly brewed cup of coffee. Ava, you ain't missing much. Sometimes when I think about the old times and miss them, I realize that not much has changed! lol Am I boring or what? Of course a lot has changed but the activities that I enjoy have not. I guess this is good because I always said that all I ever need to be happy is family, my faith and a good cup of coffee. Still holds true to this day. :) Here's to old times, Ava. :)
September 21, 201411 yr Well this is certainly my kind of topic but I am going through a phase right now. :) Sone one posted on another thread that we should live each stage of our life to the fullest which is wise advice.
September 21, 201411 yr Autumn, the Light is moving away ! A "Season of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness" (Keats), inevitably reminds me of past Spring, sometimes bittersweet and often melancholy. Take the time to embrace all those feelings. They are precious, too. Love, S
September 21, 201411 yr It's funny because I was a wife and mother by the time I was 19. I didn't know any different than what my life was....i do have to say I'm glad I didn't have Facebook back then because then I might have felt I was missing out. You can't miss what you don't know. LOL Anyway...now that my kids are grown...I can go out and be wild!! Finally!! Yea right..I'm in bed by 11 on a Friday night and its hard to stay up that late! haha...but I love it. I love life just as it is...right now. Not because circumstances are how I wish them to be...but I am someone I like and am very comfortable in my own skin these days and that's something that nothing in the world can replace. When we look back at memories...its human nature to filter out the bad times....but if you really think... there were a lot of bad times in the past that went along with being young and stupid.
September 21, 201411 yr ...I just had so much fun in college and wish right now I was back in time. Sometimes it is not that much fun to be grown up and responsible. Stupid problems right. Ava, what you are describing is not "Melancholy" (as in the title of this thread) but nostalgia. And nostalgia, by definition, means that you remember all the good things and forget about all the bad things. I think it's fine to reflect back on your fun times. People should do that often, especially with old friends. But remain realistic enough to admit that there were bad things happening in your life then as well as good times. Make the effort to have fun times now, too. As they say, "These are the 'Good Old Days'". You will be nostalgic about today in 10 or 20 years. Be grateful that you have good memories. It means that you have lived a good life. Make the effort to make more happy memories. That means that you are living a good life. But don't kid yourself that things were ever perfect-- they weren't. Life isn't supposed to be perfect.
September 21, 201411 yr .there were a lot of bad times in the past that went along with being young and stupid. HEY!!! ...I resemble that remark!! to the point though...yep Jen..we all have good memories and sometimes wish life was simpler....but...reality is, most of us are happy where we are in our life now, and we are here because of the life we had when we were "young and stupid" :P as i always say..i wouldnt want to re-live my youth ( I really DID do a lot of stupid stuff), ...but...one the other hand,.. I wouldn't change a thing about it!..Its made me who I am :)
September 21, 201411 yr I think I understand that you "think" you're missing out. That said when I go on a girls night now, they all try and re-create a time that for me, has kinda passed. It was fun being there in my 20s. It was fun running a pub and having the social side. It's wonderful being my age and having this life experience now though. Enjoy where you are is my stern advice. That said if work is controlling your existance then do a review! It may be you need to do that for now but get a plan for how to change the future. There's always time and there's different fun. You will never be as young as you are right now! You are in control of your own destiny! Why can't I ever take my own advice!! But good luck to you :)
September 22, 201411 yr I agree... being grown up sucks. Sometimes I will have a dream where I am headed back down to college to do it again. I am soooo happy. Then I wake up and realize it was a dream and my whole day is shot...SHOT!!!
