Paul was a pal of mine for the last few years, both of us members of a 12-step group. He was a heavy smoker, but had been free from narcotics (he was a meth cook, among other things) for nine years. Couldn't kick the nicotine, even though he wanted to. Died of lung cancer a few days ago. I don't usually go to funerals, but I went to his. Wish I hadn't, actually. The service didn't reflect him so much as his wife and her family. But, then, funerals are for the living, not the dead, I guess.

 

Ironic; he was so proud of his clean date, and at the end he was hurting badly but refused narcotic pain medication. I wish he'd taken some. 

 

Just wanted to share this; it was very hard to get off the dope for me. It was really, really hard to stop smoking. But I did and I am so glad! I just think it's important to emphasize that this is serious shit, man. Paul was a good guy. Most loyal guy I ever met. 

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend Aine, may he RIP.....

Sorry to hear this Aine. Addiction sure can be cruel. But it’s also what makes freedom so rewarding.

Sorry for your loss but glad that you have good memories of a dear friend to hold on to. 

He is no longer suffering.  So good for him - so hard for those left on earth.  May he rest happy and naturally pain free. 

 

Aine,  so sorry for your loss.  I do admire your strength and fortitude.  

I am sure your presence was a comfort to your friend's family.

I am very sorry for your loss, Aine.  I am also very impressed with what you have been able to overcome and I hope you take great pride in that.  

So sorry for your loss Aine, it is sad to loose one that is close to you to any type of addiction.  From the sounds of it there may be good memories and sounds like he was a stand up guy and good friend.  May he rest in peace!!!!
