"Here Is Why Stick Is Better"

Yes, you will get deeper penetration with a stick (take that and run with it if you like), but these two are trying to make MIG welding sound much more complicated than it is.  Figuring out what size contact tip you need is a simple matter of knowing what size wire you're running (.023, .035, .045).  And you're not going to need eight different types of gas.  If you're doing a specialized job you may need a rarer mix, but the overwhelming majority of jobs can be done with a 75/25 Argon/Carbon Dioxide mix.  If you're looking for a stronger weld a 95/5 Argon/Oxygen mix will do the job.

I have many more thoughts about this subject, but just realized as I was typing...It's highly unlikely anyone looking at this thread gives a tinker's damn about MIG welding.

@Boo um..think the MIG argument was lost as soon as you told us sticks got deeper penetration.

Is stick wot we call arc welding? Can you confirm that TIG is prettier than MIG but more expensive, and much less forgiving?

I rang cake eater to talk welding and got even more confused.

Dammit!  Shot down my own argument because I forgot the audience I was speaking to.  Rookie mistake.

Yep.  Arc, stick, manual...all just different names for the same game.  And TIG will produce a cleaner weld, the tungsten used does not become part of the weld like the wire does in MIG welding.  TIG is better for thinner metals and smaller jobs.  TIG is also a far more involved process than MIG.  The only experience I have with TIG is when I was screwing around in my garage with some old aluminum canoes.  While I'm not adept at TIG, I found it to be much better than MIG on aluminum.

As far as price goes, initially a TIG setup will cost you more.  However, the gas costs about the same and the electrodes are non-consumable compared to flux-cored wire.

You know...one of the things that keeps me coming back to the Train is the fact that you can never predict what direction a thread is going to take.

Rapt with attention,  I thank you for mansplaining why stick may be not so miraculous.

Geez...this thread has got too clever for me...I got lost after deeper penetration...or  any penetration actually !!!!

Penetration may be an issue, me, I appreciate volume.  How much space do you envelope ?

This looks interesting from my perspective and sticks on the head is never wrong,

no matter how you re-word that sentence.  This visual is just yummy all the way.
