I've been talking to people around me about whether or not they'll be getting a Covid-19 shot once a vaccine is available. I am planning on getting one as I've been getting a flu shot for years anyway. My husband and my "California" mom are not and have never gotten a flu shot either.

 So I'm wondering what everyone else thinks?

So this is a double poll. First question in regards to the Covid shot and second about the yearly flu shot. 

I get every shot available. Never had an issue with any of them. The say the flu shot varies in effectiveness year to year but I've not had a really bad flu since I started getting one each year so what the hell. Why not? It's free of charge too, as are any of the other's I've had in recent years, pneumococcal, yellow fever and shingles, tetanus etc.

I suppose there's more concern over the testing protocol and time frame with the Covid vaccines in the works but I figure, whatever they come up with should be better than nothing?

I get the flu shot every year and fully intend to do so this year.  There is usually a flu shot clinic I go to at work but now since I telework mostly (been in the office three times since March 20), I'll need to go to a pharmacy.  No big deal, I will get one in the next couple of weeks.

 

The covid vaccine is more complicated.  I voted "yes" in the poll but I want to feel comfortable that the vaccine has been properly tested and that real public health experts and doctors recommend it.  My concern is that the vaccine will be rolled out way too soon for political purposes.  I definitely plan to consult with my personal doctor prior to taking a covid vaccine..

Good points @johnny5, I've read that Fauci assures that no vaccine will come out until they're sure of its effectiveness and i am relying on that to be true....hopefully it is...

You can get the flu vaccine already? It's late October before it's available here. 

We can in California. My Dr office has a limited supply though and it's on a first come first serve basis. I usually get it in late October but am going next week to hopefully get one before they run out. Otherwise I'll have to go to the urgent care or pharmacy.

I just got my flu shot yesterday.  I always got one every year because I worked for a school system and it was free.  The only year I did not get it, there was a shortage and you had to be 60 yrs. old to get it.  I was only 59.  That was the year of the swine flu and of course, I ended up with it.  I was very sick for three weeks.  As far as the Covid vaccine, I trust my doctor to guide me.

I don't know about Calif. but here, if you are over a certain age, 70 or 75 I think, you are eligible for what they call a "Super Flu shot". No idea what the difference is. I was surprised when I heard that from my Mom. She's been getting it for a couple of decades now and I can tell you for certain, she hasn't had the flu 👍

They have that here too but it's 65 and older I believe. My FIL got it last year and got really sick he said.

I used to get the flu shot every year but I stopped doing so seven years ago.  I did get it two years ago and I think it made me sick so I didn't get it last year.  I'm thinking I might get it this year, only because I worry that if I get sick, I won't know if it's coronavirus or the flu.  I don't think I would be open to getting a vaccine for the coronavirus because it will be too new.  Not interested in being a guinea pig.

I have been getting the flu jab for over 10years ....because of Tony,s condition ,they thought it was wise..

So I got the flu vac this year, just like every other year. Southern Hemisphere we are just on the tail end of the flu season here. There were shortages here this year, flu vac normally available from end of March but due to the massive uptake it got priority to aged and vulnerable here. I had mine late April at work. Normally have it June.

 

We have a super flu vac for the elderly too. It has influenza and pneumonia vaccines. It's also available to chronic asmatics and some other conditions. 

 

I'm 100% pro vaccination.

 

Yes trials are being rushed...but they are more rushing the ethics protocol stages (ie red tape) than the clinical evidence side...thats not saying the tests are not ethical just that instead of 12 months debate and submitting protacols between each stage they are rubberstamping. They still need to have evidence of no harm. Sure no one wants another thalidomide or some long term side effect but knowing that 2 clinicals have been stopped here because of odd results I feel confident if they make it here then i wont be worried. 

 

 

Ok..so just like normal trials the ones here have the usual control group (placebo) and the live group (vaccine or medicine)....one of pur trials has someone who has got sick, not covid. Because trials are blind, no one knows if this subject is on the placebo or the vaccine. Normally. The trial would stop for everyone then they would check to see what she was and start again with all new subjects. Not so this time, because of the rush, they are removing the subject from the trial, bringing in a second team to break the blind and determine which she was on. If it's the placebo the trial continues. This is what is meant by rushing the testing.

Ummmm ..... yeah. That was me that had a slight reaction!

I know, I know..."an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."  I'm well aware of the medical advice and what most would consider common sense.

 

That being said: I've only had the flu once in my life.  I was in high school and there was a strain going around that got more than half the student body sick.  They shut down the school for a couple of days to give us time to heal up.  Haven't had the flu since.

 

Perhaps I'm being a bit cocky, but I haven't really felt the need to get a shot.  My immune system is strong like bull...

 

As for the Covid vaccination...barring unforeseen and dramatic changes, I won't be taking it.

Hey @Boo do you think you would consider it differently if you lived in a crowded metropolis? Or were working in a hospital? Or a older? Curious not criticising.

 

I've only had the flu once and I got swine flu when that did it's round but most winters I'll cop a cold or bronchitis. I know as a kid my bronchitis improved when we moved out to the outer suburbs, ya know that suburb where its part built up and part farms just on the edge of country....but the first 13 years we lived less than 5km from the centre of the CBD. We were always catching everything.

 

I do think if I didn't have pre existing health issues I'd be less inclined to get the covid vac until I was older. Also know I never bothered with the flu vax when i was working in a small office and driving to work. But cramming onto public transport twice a day and working with a couple a hundy others i do. Plus my healths in the crapper and the kid has bronchial asthma.

All jokes aside. I’ve got the flu jab again this year. Also got 2 jabs for pneumonia. First couple of months ago then the follow up one last week. I’ll be due the next in 2025 if I remember.

Hard to say.  I'm at a point in my life where I can't even imagine living in a big city.  My whole outlook on life might be different if I lived in one of those heavily populated concrete jungles.  It's a funny, funny riddle...

I just got back from getting a flu shot. I had to call when I got there and stay outside until someone came and got me. Then when they came out I wasn't allowed to bring anything in with me. Got brought back and I signed the form, got the shot and had to take the pencil they gave me to sign with me.

Times have really changed y'all!

I still don't get it. We won't be able to get the flu shot for at least another 6 weeks. I guess they want some of us to get the flu and pass on in early October to thin the lines when they do start with the shots?
