See this bloody  royal wedding,  sooner it's over with the better.. now Harry is the only one I can really tolerate from the lot of them but I have no intention of watching the fookin thing...

What exactly does the royal family do? Are they like the government of the land? IS it something political?

I mean America doesn't really have a "royal family". There is that whole Kardashian fiasco but I think it is a felony to refer to them as anything polite.

The royal family come and visit there convicts from time to time, say or do silly things and then pop off back home... not sure what they do... Andrew & Harry went to war and Harry started the Invictus Games so he has actually done something really worthwhile with his life... Princess Anne is an Olympian... she competed in equestrian... but other than that... the girls wear questionable hats and bright clothes and the boys were silly looking impracticable uniforms with lots of sparklies i doubt they earned.

They all have funny waves???

Spend the taxes we have to pay them???

Queen Liz learnt how to drive ambulances during WW2 and how to fix their engines??? so they mechanic??

That's what I'm not totally clear on - how they are financed? Clearly they have a ton of $$. I assume it's all tax money but is it a direct tax on stuff people in England buy - like a "Royal Tax" or is it just money that is funneled to the Royal Family through the Federal Govt.? I'm truly curious as to how they make that much $$. I heard the wedding dress cost something in the area of $250,000.00  That's outrageous to the normal person on the street. My Gawd! The entire wedding cost of 50-100 thousand would be breathtaking - IMO.

The whole Royal Family thing is the stuff of fairy tales and for that reason, it's a good thing. A pleasant diversion from real life but at what cost and to whom?

Oh @reciprocity cos your Canadian and therefore commonwealthy ... pretty sure part of your taxes go to them... I think all the commonwealth countries have to pay a tax to england/the crown... cos she's our queen too (rolleyes)..... pretty sure that's where the money comes from... they get wages for being royals.... now one of the Britskies might be able to come in here and correct my convict assumptions but pretty sure that's the case... all the commonwealth countries have to pay money to the royals to support their lifestyles...

@reciprocity ...

If the question was, how much does it cost Australia to remain a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, then the answer in 2015/16 is: AUS$10,193,919.

This comprises:

£2,037,173 for Australia’s contribution to the Commonwealth Secretariat Fund.

£3,648,670 for Australia’s contribution to the Commonwealth Technical Cooperation Fund

£327,348 for Australia’s contribution to the Commonwealth Youth Programme.

Added up and converted to AUD at today’s exchange rate comes in at $10m, which is a a pittance when compared to Australia’s foreign aid budget of $3.9 billion per annum.

^^ Doesn't include he cost of supporting and housing the Australian Governor General & The Governor Generals or Chief Commissioner for each state (which you guys have too... I think you have a Governor General and then also the equivalent in each of the Provinces)

It cost Canada $43 million to support the royal family in 2015. I think the calculation is about CAN$1.60/per person per year in your neck of the woods. Kiwis have it worse, they are forking out about CAN$2.35/per person per year.

On top of that, we have to play for all their expenses, including travel/flights when they come to visit.... isn't it a great deal??

(Guess who isn't a fan of the monarchy)

I was aware that travel costs were paid by us and that we were getting rear-ended for the cost of having a Governor General of Canada, who basically does nothing except go to parties and what not. But the part I was not aware of was how much of our tax $$ they were extracting and what government agency was paying it to them.

At least some of the current yougins seem to have a leaning toward social charity? I mean, if you don't have to have a real job because everything's paid for then, might as well do some good for those who are less fortunate - guilty conscious maybe?

I know very little on this, but here goes.

So this is where we get into the murky waters of lies, damned lies and statistics. Royalists will tell you they bring nothing but sunshine and joy to the whole world at a cost to nobody, abolitionists will tell you they cost the earth.

The royals are paid out of UK treasury coffers in the form of a sovereign grant (which replaced the civil list). The amount of that grant is determined as a percentage of the profit from The Crown Estate which is paid directly to the UK treasury in the first place. The Crown Estate is owned by the sovereign in right of the Crown and is not the personal portfolio of the Queen. Whether you believe that the Sovereign is entitled to that ownership is something you can determine based on your own outlook.

The sum that Jo referred to as the cost to Australia is in fact the cost of being part of the commonwealth, which these days has nothing to do with having the Queen as monarch and is simply a cooperative of nations. This "club" seeks to enhance the lives of its citizens and share expertise that is of mutual benefit.

If we talk about the cost of the Royal family visiting a host nation on their invitation, yes that cost is borne by the host nation, but that is in no way different to any other dignatory. In the article I read, apparently the cost of Oprah Winfrey visiting Australia cost its taxpayers more than the Queen's visit. In the same way when the Pope visited Canada there was a significant cost to Canadian taxpayers as a result of that trip.

It's way too boring to go into too much detail, but if you'd like some links for reading, I'm more than happy to pass some on.

It's unlucky to leave the curse it thread without uttering a profanity

^^ @Sslip, oh so you clocked that I only quoted the bits that suited my argument?... Lol... Don't start me on frickin Oprah and the Oprah visit... Basically in my little democratic socialist heart its all money we could have spent on schools or frickin health or frickin anything more worthwhile... And you know what I think we get out of commonwealthing ... The comn games and sporting bragging rights... That's it!... Honestly if some country to our north decided to invade us these are our allies who would actually come to our aid (in my opinion, and in order...)... NZ, France, Canada, USA (cos they have there 'secret' spy bases here)... I don't think the POM's would lift a finger, don't get me wrong I don't hate the POM's, not even in an ashes year, but I dont think we would rate as a priority.. The Canadians and us have a surprising amount of closely shared military history and incidents of hauling each others arses out of the messes others have dumped us in on the battle field.

^^^ Maybe I have more faith on what the commonwealth stands for and what it means than I should. I would be appalled if we didn't lift a finger in times of crisis.

In any case that aside the point stands that the commonwealth and the royal family are two distinct concepts and just because tax payers money is used for commonwealth membership it doesn't mean that one penny or cent is finding its way to the royal family.

So what happens with the commonwealth money.. I'd be cool if it was being used to prop up the poorer comm countries, or to aid those affected by natural disasters... that I could be happy with. I know its a bit pessimistic (my view of the comm countries) but its just this niggly gut feeling I have.

Again, really limited knowledge in this area, a few nuggets of information here. It keeps coming back to cooperation and shared principles.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_Foundation

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_Secretariat

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_Youth_Programme

What is referred to here is tha the formation of the foundation was borne out of concepts put forward by African member nations, seemingly similar in concept to proposals put forward by Australia several times through the 20th century.

The commonwealth foundation at least is a voluntary membership and not all members nations of the commonwealth are members of the commonwealth foundation.

Just taking one piece of text from the commonwealth foundation site, so even the idea that the modern commonwealth is a UK institution would be inaccurate.

"Eight governments came together in 1949 to form the modern Commonwealth. Australia, Canada, Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and the United Kingdom declared themselves to be “united as free and equal members” co-operating together in the pursuit of peace, liberty and progress."

You know a hell of a lot more than I do on this stuff. Kind of sounds like 1+1 = 3 to me but I guess it all works out in the end. Can't imagine the world without these figureheads actually but the cost ..... oh the cost to maintain these old-world institutions ?

Lady is lucky she has my heart cause she is one expensive "free" dog....i have spent just on her surgeries about 4000 dollars over the years....*f uck** that's a lot....but I love her with all my heart

Lisa

She might be the one that I have the hardest time with when her time comes
