February 2, 201511 yr So I find out from the IRS that someone has filed a fraudulent tax return using my Social Security number. I will no doubt spend the next months jumping through hoops trying to make sure they are not trying anything else...why can't people just work for a living instead of trying to steal from those of us that do? GRRRR!
February 2, 201511 yr Oh Nancy... How horrible :( I hope that the jerks didn't do anything else. I also hope that the IRS fixes it quickly. :(
February 2, 201511 yr Ugh, I'm so sorry Nancy. This kind of crime is so scary and we're all so vulnerable to it. I hope there isn't any more activity and this gets resolved quickly.
February 2, 201511 yr Sorry to hear this Nancy... I hope that it all turns out for the best. I too despise people who think that they are entitled to things that other people have worked hard for...
February 2, 201511 yr That happened to my mother a couple of years ago. The IRS said this is common and made no big deal about it. They old her to submit her tax return as usual and include some ID number that the IRS gave her. She had to include that number on her returns for a couple of years. That's it-- that's all she had to deal with. I hope it turns out as easy for you, Nancy.
February 2, 201511 yr had someone mistake and use one kids once, took few months to get return but no hard work on my part, just wait it out

The thing I'm most curious about...they had me place a fraud alert with the credit bureaus. I wonder how difficult it will be to use my credit cards, particularly Amazon. They also told me to file a police report, file a complaint with the FTC, contact Social Security, and of course, notify my financial institution. I had to fill out an Identity Theft Affidavit and send it with my return...we'll just see what happens!
February 2, 201511 yr Oh my, Nancy. Hope that is the only thing they did with your identity! That is scary!
February 2, 201511 yr Karma is a bitch Nancy...they will get theirs. Sorry about your situation....doing taxes suck enough as it is.

February 2, 201511 yr Come to think of it, I guess the IRS did have my mother do that stuff, too. I think that was mostly just in case the thieves tried to steal more of her identity-- they didn't. But that reminds me-- I strongly advise EVERYONE to put a "freeze" on your credit with all three credit reporting bureaus. That means that nobody (including you) can open a new credit account in your name. The way most people suffer major headaches from stolen identities is that the thieves open new credit accounts in your name and charge them to the max-- Visa, Mastercard, etc and department stores and electronics stores and telephone companies, etc. They could even purchase a new car in your name. By freezing your credit they can't do that no matter what personal information they have on you. The downside is that if you want to get some credit-- if you want to open a department store charge or purchase a car-- you have to call all 3 credit bureaus in advance and "unfreeze" your account for 1 week or 1 month or whatever you choose. We froze our credit several years ago because consumer advocate Clark Howard recommended it and I'm very relieved that we did.
February 2, 201511 yr That's terrible Nancy. I've had my info stolen before and it's no fun. Somebody accessed my info and took out a bunch of internet payday loans with my info. They are actually illegal in my state, but these were foreign companies and it took a long time to sort out. I don't use credit any more unless I absolutely am forced to, it's too risky. Be careful with your ssn, we only ever get one. My son wanted me to give him his ssn the other day for something silly online and I gave him a stern lecture. I think I got the message across lol. Anyway, I know it's scary when someone steals your personal information. I hope it gets resolved soon.
February 2, 201511 yr Oh that does suck Nancy! People that can't work for a living but instead steal from others' are a waste of good clean air space! Few years ago someone had gained access to our business bank information and actually bought a $250 pair of sunglasses, then tried to purchase an airline ticket out of the country. That raised a red flag with our bank and they notified us before any further damage. (small town bank= real advantage) Ughhh!! Hope the IRS can get things sorted out soon for you Nancy.
February 3, 201511 yr Some of you may know what I do...but regularly we run a report to see if any person or business is receiving alot of electronic credits from the irs. Ususally we find one or two accounts per year doing this for no reasonable explanation so we report them to the goverment and law enforcement and throw them out. As far as a fraud alert, make sure you do a permanent fraud alert and not a temporary alert. One lasts only a short period of time and the other for seven years. If you are a victim of id theft and provide a police report, It is free, no need to sign up for an extra monioting service for a fee. In addition to the three credit bureas, also put an alert on your Chexsystems reportwhich is a service most banks check when you open a checking or other type of bank account , not a credt account. http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0279-extended-fraud-alerts-and-credit-freezes https://www.allclearid.com/blog/tag/account-fraud
