July 9, 20215 yr Author Maddie went in for her one-year check-up this afternoon. The little gal is fit as a fiddle. She stands 28 inches tall and weighs 22 pounds. Her teeth (all six of them) are in good shape. Maddie was pointing and babbling when we went into the office. Those were two of the key developmental markers the doctor was looking for. The doctor said that four words for a child her age was good. She says: duh-da-da...I'm particularly proud of that one. She calls Sugar Britches: muh-ma. She calls Cash: woof. And following her birthday party she picked up the word "ba-woo" for balloon. The circumference of her head is in the 95th percentile. Sugar Britches said that she got her daddy's big head. I had to explain that a big brain makes a big head a necessity. Maddie had to get an immunization shot. That part was tough. To Maddie's credit, I think she handled the shot better than me and Sugar Britches. The little gal is a tough one. Her bottom lip quivered a bit and her eyes welled up with tears, but she soldiered through it. The doctor gave her a teddy bear with a lab coat and stethoscope for being such a "brave girl." Miss Maddie checks out perfect...other than being spoiled rotten. And we wouldn't have her any other way.

We got in some pool time with the neighbors today. Miss Maddie is already able to swim short distances all on her own. The little gal would swim back-and-forth between me and Sugar Britches. She had a really determined look on her face as she kept her head above water and propelled herself with her arms and legs. That look of determination turned to pure pride when she finished. A little grin that said: "did you see what I did?" Maddie has taken to the water like a natural. When she's not swimming, she enjoys splashing around and riding on little floats. We also play a game where Sugar Britches holds Maddie and I swim underwater and "sneak up" on them. I pop up out of the water and Maddie laughs out loud every time. Boo Acres is now the future home of its very own concrete pond. Good times.

Might be getting a little ahead of myself here, but I have been looking online at sit-on-top kayaks for kids. The age range they suggest is 4-8 years-old. I'll probably buy one for her before she turns four; let her grow into it and get comfortable in the pool. July 26, 20215 yr Author Maddie loves penguins. It was a stormy Sunday here, so we went down to the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga. Maddie enjoyed watching the fish and turtles. She wasn't even put off by the sharks and alligators. She didn't care for the lemurs much. One of them jumped on the fence right in front of us and it spooked the little gal a bit. Then we got to the penguin display. She lit up immediately. She would point and say: "DAT!" She laughed. She clapped. She would turn and look at me and Sugar Britches then point at the penguins; wanted to make sure we weren't missing anything. When one of the penguins swam right by where we were standing, she let out a squeal that got everyone's attention. Most folks like penguins, but I've never seen anyone so overcome with joy by them. On the way out, we passed through the gift shop. There's always a gift shop. Bought a life-size plush penguin and the annual family membership plan. We'll be back.

I've got it framed up and the walls are finished. All that's left is finishing the roof and the final touches. My sister found a little rocking chair at a store up on Signal Mountain and brought it by the house yesterday. Miss Maddie is going to have a complete front porch experience. The weather didn't permit me to do much on the playhouse this weekend, but did provide for plenty of fun in the rain. Maddie, now that she's toddling around at a pretty good pace, goes out with me and tends to the donkeys. We bought her a raincoat and little rain boots. I figured it was a good opportunity to put the raingear to the test. We splashed around in puddles. I would hold Maddie's hands and help her get a big jump for maximum splash. Sugar Britches was saying something about the clean up. Maddie and I were having a grand ole time playing in the rain. Took another trip down to the Aquarium in Chattanooga on Saturday. Maddie got to visit with her penguin friends again, or "gwens" as she calls them. An employee at the aquarium who takes care of the animals took note of Maddie's interest. She let us come into the exhibit area. I fed a couple of the penguins smelt which allowed Maddie to get up close to the penguins. The little gal is fascinated by those penguins. Maddie has also discovered the simple pleasure of fresh, ripe peaches. Yesterday, she was sitting in her high-chair, eating a peach, and grinning from ear-to-ear...so, it's safe to say: life is good.

I gave Maddie a sanding sponge and she went to work. She also banged away on a piece of wood with a little 8 ounce hammer. Helping out is one of Maddie's favorite forms of play. She enjoys helping Sugar Britches clean the house. She helps washing dishes. She hopped right in when I was working on the playhouse. The little gal is a big help. We do have to keep the handheld vacuum away from her after she vacuumed the dog. Fortunately, Cash is very patient with Maddie.
