January 17, 20215 yr Author Sugar Britches has more guidelines for bath time with Maddie than I do. She'll ask me: "Are you bathing her or are you two just playing in there?" Typically, it's a little from Column A and a little from Column B.
January 21, 20215 yr Author Miss Maddie has her first friend close to her own age: Betsy. Betsy is eight-months old. Betsy's mom and dad are friends of Sugar Britches. Maddie and Betsy have neither one had any interactions with children their own age, so we decided to set up a little meet-and-greet at our house last night. The concept of socialization is brand new to both of them and in their time here our culture has been dominated by shutdowns, lockdowns, and mandated isolation. After a brief stare-down, Maddie and Betsy started to hit it off. They shared toys and laughed simultaneously. I don't know what it is about Cash, but little baby girls seem to agree that he is very funny. By the end of the evening, Maddie and Betsy were inseparable. No matter where you put them down on the floor, they typically ended up right on top of each other in due time. Maddie is also adding to her mobility repertoire. Rolling is still her primary means of getting from Point A to Point B. It would be a stretch to say she's crawling now, but she can scoot a bit like an inchworm. Lifts her bottom in the air, pulls her knees under, and finishes by stretching out. It may take her a while, but with a few rolls and a bit of scooting...she gets there.

Sugar Britches made up a mix of butternut squash with a bit of pear in it. Maddie was putting that stuff away. And we have a hands-down winner in the field of Maddie's least favorite food: avocado. Tried a bit of avocado the other night...Maddie was not having it. She scrunched her little face up and pushed it out with her tongue. Maddie's chin and bib were covered, but she didn't eat any of it. Sugar Britches thought this was funny. She hates avocados too. I like avocados. This is a debate we've had between us for a while and now I'm outnumbered on the avocado issue. I was going to give some to Cash, try to even the score, but Sugar Britches said he doesn't get a vote: "He'll eat anything." she said. Maddie's new friend Betsy is coming by again tomorrow. It was cold and rainy outside the other night, so Betsy didn't get a chance to meet Peanut and Shorty. I don't think Betsy cared one way or the other, but her parents were disappointed. Betsy turns nine-months old on Sunday. We're gonna have a joint birthday hootenanny tomorrow at Boo Acres. Swing by if you're in the neighborhood.
January 22, 20215 yr Lol.... Avocardo....They have my vote ....they sure are a required taste .... Sounds like fun tomorrow ....down on the Boo Chaparral..... I would love to spend time with those Donkeys ....if I start walking now ...I might just make it ... Enjoy !!!!

January 25, 20215 yr Author Had my first telephone conversation with Maddie this afternoon. Sugar Britches called me at work. Maddie was in a talking mood. The little gal kept getting louder and louder so Sugar Britches said: "I think she wants to talk to you." She would babble for a bit and then drift off, but she got mad when Sugar Britches tried to take the phone away. It was the best phone call ever. Quick tip: If you plan on having a phone call with a seven month old, you might want to clear your schedule. Miss Maddie stayed on the line for a good while.
February 5, 20215 yr Author Miss Maddie is keeping us guessing. When she was born, her hair was black. Gradually, Maddie's hair started to turn more brown. Over the last few weeks, her hair has lightened considerably to a light brown / almost blonde. I just hope she's not sneaking out of the house and running up a tab at the beauty shop.

February 18, 20215 yr Author Maddie is going mobile. She still rolls a lot to get from place to place. She's still doing the inch-worm move but has added more arm movement. She has transitioned from an inch-worm to more of an army crawl. The little gal is also holding herself up in a plank position now. Miss Maddie is setting the wheels in motion to start crawling any day now. The girl is a mover. We lay her in the same spot in her crib every night. Where she ends up during the night is anybody's guess. The other night I went in to check on her and she had her head against the footboard with her bottom up in the air and her knees tucked beneath her stomach. Speaking of sleeping patterns, it's not uncommon now for Maddie to sleep up to ten-hours uninterrupted. The early morning routine has been pushed back so the little sleepy head can get her rest. All-in-all, Miss Maddie is doing great. The second round of teething has been more difficult than the first. The two front teeth on the bottom came in easier than expected, the top ones seem to be bothering the little gal more. Teething rings and chilled banana puree go a long way in providing some much needed relief. I'm not sure if her little plush toy giraffe is going to survive this round of teething. There has to be a limit to how much gnawing and drool one stuffed animal can take.

February 26, 20215 yr Author Miss Maddie has three teeth now with a fourth on the way. Two little incisors on the bottom and one on the top. The second top incisor is ready to come through anytime now. Sugar Britches found a toothbrush for babies that fits on the end of your finger and makes brushing those little pearly whites much easier. Gotta keep that toothy little grin perfect. Maddie already had me wrapped around her little finger as it was. When I came home from work yesterday, Maddie was sitting in the floor and started laughing and clapping her hands when I walked in. I've never felt more proud in my life. If you're thinking "that little girl can play Boo like a fiddle"...you're right.

March 5, 20215 yr Author Update on the crawling situation: Maddie is crawling on all-fours now, sort of. She goes in circles to the right on her hands and knees. She uses the army crawl to move forward and still rolls to make lateral moves. Maddie's method of mobility is a bit unconventional, but she gets where she's going. Maddie follows Cash around the house. She talks to him, laughs at him, and pets him. The other night, she was pulling on his ears. To his credit, he just laid there and let her play. He's a good dog and very patient with the little lady. On 2/26/2021 at 3:35 PM, Boo said: Miss Maddie has three teeth now with a fourth on the way. The fourth tooth came through on Wednesday night. I don't think she's ready for corn-on-the-cob just yet, but she is working on a nice set of choppers.

March 8, 20215 yr Author Maddie had her first overnight camping experience this weekend. We had beautiful weather over the weekend so I thought it would be a good time to venture out. The little gal took to the tent life like a veteran hiker. Drifting off to sleep watching the campfire really seemed to suit her. We've taken her hiking before but I didn't know if she would like sleeping outside. She slept like a log. Maddie got a little fussy when I started taking down the tent. I think she was hoping for a multiday hike. Looking forward to spending many days and nights out in the woods with my new little adventure buddy.
