December 4, 201411 yr I just found out my uncle has Prostate Cancer. Stage 2. His health has been failing for a while. We have never been close and he's caused some drama with me, so I don't know how to feel. I feel bad for not being overwhelming sad. Maybe I just feel numb? I think I'm in shock right now. I haven't processed the information entirely yet because I have never dealt with this kind of thing before. My family usually gets struck down by heart problems... not cancer.
December 4, 201411 yr Typed a long responce, it's gone into the ether :( So if something else turns up, ignore this and read that. I may sound callous but I do not think you "should or shouldn't" feel something simply because you share a bloodline with someone. If drama has marred your relationship then please don't feel bad chick. Cancer can be pretty harsh, goodness, I really take a breath saying that. So I think unless you feel utterly moved to re-engage (some people do) then it's ok to say not for me. Goodness, it's pouring a bit for you at the moment hey, your head must be spinning love. Make sure you do something nice and calming for yourself for me will you. Calming music, bubble bath, bacon sandwich...whatever floats your boat but be gentle with my friend ok. xx
December 4, 201411 yr I'm sorry to read this. My uncle was recently diagnosed and successfully treated for stage 2 prostate cancer. I wish your uncle the same successful outcome.
December 4, 201411 yr Author It is sad and I would never wish this upon someone. I can only imagine what he's going through. Hopefully he will be okay. I don't even know what to say to him. Is there anything that can be said? You're right Marti... I'm not sure I should have to feel a certain way. I do hope he's able to fight this and come away as a survivor. So happy to hear about your uncle DD. I know it can be very aggressive, so I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed that they caught it early enough for him to recover with the same results as your uncle. Marti, I plan on going out tonight or tomorrow for a nice dinner and some shopping. Get away from the stress and the homework and just the crappyness of this week.

December 4, 201411 yr I don't know how to feel. You feel the way you feel, Leanna, and however you feel is the right way to feel. I have felt like this song once or twice ;) , to be honest. Oh, I hope this wasn't a terrible thing to post, please forgive my dark attempt at humor support. http://youtu.be/JAz5uaXRzqU

December 4, 201411 yr Leanna, I agree with Marti...you can't control how you feel. You said you would not wish this on anyone, and that you are numb...it may take awhile to figure out how you feel. But it is certainly understandable that you do not feel compelled to rush to his side. I am also glad to hear that you have a treat planned for yourself!
December 5, 201411 yr Sorry to hear about your Uncle, Leanna. Prostate cancer treatment has come a long way from even 5 years ago. You'll know when the time is right to say something to him and when you do, the words will be there. There is no manual on how we should feel when something like this happens. We think we know how we "should" feel or "should" react but that is not what happens when we faced with different situations. There is nothing wrong at all with how you feel right now and the only thing you can do is keep an open mind and don't pressure yourself to feel or act a certain way. Hang in there, Leanna. Better days ahead.
December 5, 201411 yr ((( Leanna))) - sorry to hear about your uncle - but make sure you look after yourself ... And remember we are here for you if you need it !
December 5, 201411 yr Author You guys are so wise. ((((((Hugs)))))) I've heard some pretty good stories about prostate cancer today, so that gives me hope. At the end of the day, he's family and I love him. He's at an early stage of the cancer, so that's promising. He's been telling people he's not going to get the treatment, says he doesn't want it to ruin his love life/sex drive. I'm sitting here, shaking my head and thinking, "You won't have a sex drive if you're dead!" ... But I shall bite my tongue. He's probably just in shock and not thinking properly.

Not going to get the treatment?! That's crazy! Hopefully you are right and he's not thinking and reconsiders...

December 5, 201411 yr Hey Leanna Sorry to hear the news. Most diagnosed with this die WITH it not FROM it. I suspect the bravado is a coping strategy. Speaking as a full blown skirt-wearing man, I can confidently say that men talk a lot of bollox when faced with an illness. As for your feelings, they are what they are - I think that you tell him that you are sorry to hear of the diagnosis and hope that he engages positively and overcomes the diagnosis... Then you crack on with life. Keep smiling!
