My wee boy has been unwell since last Wednesday and I am completely stressing out.  He has not eaten properly since then, he has always been a fussy eater even when well, but I am worried beyond belief at the minute. I took him to the docs today who said "nothing to fret about, its a virus, and as long as he is drinking".  Ummm but you can see and count every rib jutting out, see his bones in his back, anyone have a realistic idea of how long a virus (common cough and cold) can last for and affect eating, should I be as worried as I am, He is on a course of antibiotics, not been at school since last Wednesday either.  Im managing to get him to eat a few spoons of ice cream, or a bite of a sandwich.  Sorry to offload, but all of my friends have older children like my eldest and you kinda forget.  Just a worried mum xxx

What about Ensure, Boost, or pediasure (or store brand equivalent) shakes. My son is a very picky eater and we have a hell of a time putting weight on him. Our pediatrician told us to have him drink the shakes so that he gets some sort of sustenance. Also there is the Carnation instant breakfast mix you can make him an ice cream shake and put that in for extra vitamins. If he has lost weight and you are worried then all fattening calories are good and let him drink fattening things along with tons of water and gatorade to keep hydrated.

I am sorry that your boy is sick... I know how you feel we wish we can take it away and go through it for them.

Thanks Jen, not sure what we can get in the UK for him, we asked at the Pharmacy on Weds and they told us that there is nothing we can give him.  I'm going shopping tommorow first chance Ive had so Im going to look in the supermarket, its breaking my heart, and yes let me have the illness leave my wee man at peace xxx

Oh poor Mommy,  poor bebe.

Doll has good advise, Ensure, Boost or pediasure shakes.

or make up your own smoothies with protein powder and milk or juice.

I make a nourishing smoothie with juice, tofu, frozen berries, banana...yoghurt.

you can get protein powder and that kind of stuff at a Vitamin store or health food store.

I know you are frantic.  Please remember to breathe.  Let his medicine do it's work.

Sending prayers, Jackie.

Prayers for you and boy.

Love,

S

Jackie,

You can make a homemade version of Pedia-sure.

Homemade High-Calorie Pediatric Shake

12 oz. vanilla ice cream
1-1/4 c. apple juice
1 c. frozen fruit
2 scoops Vanilla Whey Protein
2 mL Enfamil Poly-Vi-Sol with Iron (this is baby formula Jackie)
1 small or 1/2 large banana (OR 1/2 avocado)

Blend and serve.

I had a nasty virus several years ago that lasted 10 days.  I had a fever the entire time and went to the doctor after about 5 days and he said after 10 days it should go away and on the 11th day, I was well again.

If my child was sick for over a week like that I would take him/her to another doctor and get a second opinion and see if blood work etc. was needed.

Jackie you can buy what's called "build up" its in a box and sold at chemists and in supermarkets it powdered milk shake flavours use full fat milk, ice cream and fresh fruit tastes delicious and full of vitamins and minerals just check that's it's suitable for your sons age comes in chocolate, banana, original or strawberry

Hope he gets well soon hun xxxxxx

Poor little guy!   Something similar happened to my youngest a couple of years ago and she lost a ton of weight too. She is super slim to start with so not eating made it so much worse.  A virus can last a long time.  Love the shake recipe Colleen posted.   Praying he gets well soon.  xx

Ow, that is crazy that a doctor would say that... I can't fathom :(

Sorry Jackie, and I hope the wee man starts eating again, soon... Must be so hard being a parent in times like these. Good job he's got a great mum to look after him.

Sorry, I wasn't really any help at all :(

J66, I'll leave this one to the experts, but I will send you and yours tons of positive vibes. I'm sure your little lad will be feeling better soon.  :)

Awh the poor pet, 9 days is a long time to not be eating much, is he doin number 2's??

If he is still the same over the weekend, I'd bring him to A&E cos that's far too long to go without food,

Is he vomiting or temperature?

We boil 7up and put a couple of spoons of honey in it and let it cool down and get them to drink it, it always seems to do the job, would he normally eat bananas, if he does could you do a banana float, just banana, with or without strawberries, ice cream, raspberry or chocolate syrup.

Poor fella I'd say he is soo weak, I'd defo get the 7 up and boil it with honey it really helps give them energy,

He's not having hassle in school or anything like that is he hun??

Aww jackie....

Poor little guy.....

You have had great advice ...and I could only mirror what's been said.....

I'm sending you and your little man a sqeezy hug....and wish him well as soon as.....
