Had a conversation with a fella I know through my work.  He's a welder, a damn good welder at that, used to do underwater work on the oil rigs down in the Gulf of Mexico.  He looks rough and tough but he has a soft spot.  I explained my situation and he told me: "I have a son now, two years-old."  He paused and continued: "Everything I do now is to make sure the boy is happy and has a good life...he matters more than anything."

You will shed many a tear my Darling in the years to come ....

@jillar, I am sorry, I was learning about my new buttons and accidentally erased your post.

I can't remember what it was but, I gave it a funny 'like' button and then I don't know what happened.

I am a bad mod.  bad bad bad.  mia culpa.

This is what happens when they let the inmates run the asylum.

I deleted it Big D and it wasn't as satisfying as I thought it would be.  LOL.

I should have 'quoted' Doreen's post before I deleted it so there was proof of my 'deletion capabilities'.

Now back to Boo's Daddy-O Tips...

Have FUN !

My grandad used to take us each on a date once every month or so...sometimes it was a movie and a meal, or a picnic, or to the race track, or the museum, or the art gallery, or for a day at the RSL or the bowls club...bit on that day there would be lessons in being independent and equal to any man but also that it was nice to have a door opened for you.

Dad was all about the sports....and how to change a fuse, and a light bulb, and cook and throw and catch and swim and dance and mow the lawn and paint the house, set up the flat packs, cook a Barbie, iron pleats, kick a footy, change a tire, check the water and oil...he sat on the floor and had tea parties with me...he climbed on the roof (scared of heights) to test which plane design would send Barbie the furtherest...he raced slot cars with me, taught me to ride a bike and do trig, hit a nail with a hammer....but essentially my dad and his father in-law taught me there was no such thing as girls work and boys work....but even though I could go what a boy could and should never be dependent on a bloke I should still be treated as a princess. Make sure your Princess learns that shit too.

I've been thinking a lot about what it means to be a father to a daughter.  Well beyond the basic needs of any human: water, food, shelter, safety, etc.  My thinking has turned more towards what Abraham Maslow labeled on his "hierarchy of needs" as: Love and Belonging, Esteem, and Self-Actualization.  I've made no secret of the fact that I tend to overthink things and obsess.  Yet strangely enough, on this item of utmost importance I feel calm...it just makes sense.

I will be very influential in Maddie's life.  There will be times when I need to lead and other times when I need to follow.  This is a little human being we are welcoming into the world.  Maddie will have her own personality.  Her own thoughts.  Her own unique series of strengths and skills.  There will be things I teach her and other things that we will learn together along the way.  It will be the greatest privilege of my life to watch her become her own person and support her in living out her best life.

April and I haven't had the opportunity to formally meet Maddie yet, but we have a level of unconditional love for that little girl that is unwavering.  Whoever Maddie becomes and whatever path she chooses to follow, I'll be there ready to step in if needed or get out of the way if need be.

If I die now, will I have time to be re-incarnated as an April/Boo Bundle of Joy ?

Two tips:

  • Do not dangle your baby over a balcony

  • More importantly.....do not name your baby "Blanket".
