Just the ramblings of too much caffeine, too much time on my hands, and too few firing neurons.

 

I have a friend/co-worker, that whenever she is working at the site I work at, is one that never seems to not feel comfortable to be around.

 

She works full-time as an RN Operating Room instructor, teaching RN's how to do that.

 

Her name is Tracey but, she made it clear to me, when we were alone outside smoking together, she would rather I called her Trace.

 

She is close to my age, grew up the daughter of a retired RCMP officer, in the "North", where I used to work, a former smoker now, and has lots of experiences like me. There's a lot of similarities between us.

 

A few years ago now, I was in the OR on a table, waiting to have my third Rhinoplasty/septoplasty, when I saw Trace walk by with a few younger RN's following behind. I said, "Hi Trace", she acknowledged me, and the next thing I remember, I was waking up in Recovery, with a hell of a headache, from the doc smashing my face, again.

 

Later, I thought, Oh! No doubt Trace, was in on my urinary catheterization with her students. I of course had signed the waiver, to let supervised students, do procedures during my treatment in the "teaching hospital".

 

A while later, when Trace was working at my site, I asked her about it. She said quickly, "Don't worry about it Mike, it's no big thing, I've seen thousands of 'em". Well, I wasn't worried, just making conversation. Then, I wondered though, if I should worry, "It's no big thing".

Kind of curious as to why they would put a foley cath in on a septo/rhino? I have never put one in for those ever......only longer cases over 2 hours or more even then it depends.

Well, I was only guessing it had been done. I don't know for sure. Seems though, Trace never told me differently.

 

Addendum Who knows, it might have just been an in and out. I don't work in hospitals.

Mike, maybe with a gaggle of student nurses in tow, they didn't want to miss such an obvious "teaching moment". You're a real mensch! (LOL!  :D )

However, I do remember waking up and telling the recovery room nurse that she was great looking (which she was). 

Years ago, I was in a recovery room with my sister who had had surgery.  The man across the room from us was coming out of it and hitting on every woman who walked past.  It was pretty funny.  Poor guy.  And his poor wife standing next to him.  The nurses reassured her saying this happens all the time.  Truth serum.

I have had several surgeries, my last one the lap/chole (gallbladder removal)I woke up apparently telling the pacu nurse that I dont like to be the patient as I have no control(used to being the caring for the patient not the patient) lol nurses dont always make good patients lol, after my hysterectomy when we got to my room and they got the slider board out I asked if I can just move myself (better to control my own pain in my mind there is that control thing again) they actually were happy for that one. after my tonsillectomy was the scariest one as I had 5 bronco-spasms, I remember waking up thinking if they took this mask off my face maybe I can breathe, but I was spasming and once I realized what was going on I stopped trying to take the mask off. They used some PEEP(positive end-expiratory pressure) and an epi updraft I was fine. People are different when they are waking up from anesthesia, I have had people wake straight up and try to get up and leave the or have to hold them down for their safety, I have had some wake up like they just took a nap. I have also had people wake up swinging have to duck and dodge it is all in how they react to the anesthesia.  People do say some funny things when waking up from anesthesia and they typically do not remember saying them either lol. 

Had to have underwear off for an operation. Called a mydanglertoobigformost and only thing I remember is saying "hey my underwear is still on" then it it felt like they were being ripped off on some prison type move by six people. I couldn't move but felt them flip me over after banana hammock was removed.

 

Woke up with a sore ass and sonic smiling

My last illiac stent/balloon angio, right hand side I went under just fine with warm blankies, hospital gripper socks which are cool, and ready to rock and roll with the Vascular Surgeon who btw was a real pro and no BS. All was well, until I started waking up. The anesthesiologist or a voice in my head was counting off classic cars. ..

 

'70 Mustang 428 Cobra jet, '68 Camaro, '70 Charger 440 R/T, '69 Impala and so on and on and on the voice droned, and g-dam I gotta say if it really was aggravating, that monotone.

 

I was then mostly awake and the anesth. asked me..I see you are awake, how do you feel? I told him I this whole thing would be a hell of lot nicer if he would shut it with the car stuff.

 

I remember a bunch of nurses laughing loudly...and him saying okay, he could do that...never did figure out if it was me or him. Probably him, I could never get excited about a '68 Camaro...

Prolly him and the nurses were probably like thank god someone told him to stop lol since they were possibly as tired of it as you were lol hehe

Another day-surgery. I was in post, post op, whatever you call it, waiting for me to "get my bearings". The RN told me, to stay in bed until they said I could get dressed.

 

As soon as she was gone (or I thought she was), I got out of bed, found my clothes, put one leg in my pants and fell literally, straight back. Luckily for me, most of me landed first on the bed, and broke my fall, before hitting the floor. I heard from across the room "Oh my God !!!" and another RN say, "Some men, just have to get on their feet".

 

They got really mean then! Made me stay there, (seemed like forever, and then would only let me sit in a chair, until my wife came and got me. I was going to take a cab). Every few minutes, one of them came and checked in the hallway where I was sitting, just to make sure I was still there. I had no inclinations, to hit on any of that bunch!!!

I don't understand the need for more than one Septoplasty.  Why wouldn't it last?  Mine was done 2 years ago next month and I swear it changed my life.  I could only ever sleep on my right side, ever since the surgery every time I wake up I switch sides.  I also had sinus surgery and a turbinectomy at the same time.  

 

I have to say though, when I woke up I was fighting with a damn oxygen mask strangling my nose.  Now why would you put that on someone's nose after nose surgery?  They said leave it on and I said I don't think so lol 

lol they put the mask on your face to supplement your oxygen after being extubated hehe it is also common to fight it also.

Long story short Colleen, my face has been broken, many times. Even after 3 surgeries, I still need to wear Breath Right strips, whenever I am home. When I do go out, I start to suffer. I also find relief from using a neti pot with saline 2 - 3 times per day. But, it is so much better now. For that I am thankful.

I remember the Breath Right strips...still have a year supply I think....I use to sleep with them on just about every night.  Neti Pot is awesome I know, but more than  twice a week, you should maybe see the doctor?

I said per day. I also use a double dose of Flonase.

 

I've had about all that doc stuff, I can handle.

Addendum: I see! You meant that if I am using the Neti Pot more than twice per week, I should see another doc, did I get that right?

Lol! I have really enjoyed reading the comments here! What happens in the Recovery a Room stays in the Recovery Room! Trust me! And we don't carry rulers! Septos are quirky....some work, some don't. I think neti pots are a wonderful "natural" treatment....they DO work!!! So Mike don't worry....you may not work in a hospital but I did for years...and RN's don't talk about male catheterizations at Coffee Break! Lol! This is too cute!

Well after my second appendix operation I woke up the second day after with 3 nurses standing over me waiving this long thin tube smirking and smiling saying, Well rez you have not been able to go #1 for over a day and your billiards down there are the size of melons so we are going to have to give you a FULL catheter! I said What!!! you are going to stick that tube where???? O sweet Jesus! More morphing first please, pressing my button! 2 held my arms because I was not a happy camper and one worked down below the belt line. Wow did that hurt and hurt in places I never thought could feel pain before! After they left about 15 minuets later i was lying there in shock thinking well this day has going to hell pretty fast and now i got 4 tubes in me. CRAP!

My first microscopic appendix operation went well, barely missed a step, went in Thursday morning, operation Friday morning and out Sunday morning and back to work Monday. Unfortunately the pain came back  a couple of days later because the appendix had leaked on the way out and a sist had going in place of the old appendix. The second operation in a week really messed me up. Had 4 tubes in me, antibiotics drip, some kind of a saline solution flush I think to flush me out that caused my lucky charms to swell up, morphing with a button so when I felt pain all I had to do was push the magic button, and now the full catheter, crap!

They said the faster you get things moving again the faster you will get out of here so every chance I got I would walk the halls dragging my iv rack behind me a couple of times a day and threw out the night. A couple of days later thing started working again, the melons went back to normal and one by one the tubes taken out. Never want to go through that again! I did go threw a small morphine withdrawal at home the first day or so.
