Lots of sleet, about 2" of snow and it's going to turn to ice tonight. It's going to be a real shit-show once everybody gets back on the roads here in the DC metro area.

When I first quit I found that I could obsess about wanting to smoke, if I let myself. You'll drive yourself loony if you fixate on this. I expected to have craves. Expect, Detect, Reject. Turn your thoughts to something else and by that I mean do something physical. I would get up and start doing something because it would force me to focus on what I was doing, instead of what I wasn't (smoking). I can tell you that it doesn't take long before the craves do away, especially if you train your mind to deal with these unwanted thoughts. :) I Want One! Video discusses how to stop the internal debate that often occurs after quitting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHvi6dwLanA Will I Ever Stop Thinking Of Cigarettes? Most people overestimate how much of a battle staying smoke free will be once they quit smoking. This video discusses how people will generally stop thinking about smoking, and much sooner than they usually think. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8310BI-euJw&list=PL8EB359C247D3FE6C&index=13 Frequency And Duration Of Thoughts And Urges Smokers often want others to tell them how many urges they are likely going to have when first quitting smoking, how strong will they be, how long will they last and will they face these urges for the rest of their lives. This video addresses these concerns and gives some practical advice as to how to deal with urges when and if they do occur. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuRQVdXv7Is&feature=em-upload_owner

You're goal for today: Don't smoke. Make a firm and unwavering commitment that you're not going to smoke. Destroy the smokes and ditch lighters, ashtrays etc. We all started on day one of our quits and we're still here and so will you. Remember, you're addicted to a drug and you're dealing with a drug addiction. Stay close to the site, read, post, watch videos and don't smoke! If needed, post an S.O.S. Myself, the moderators and many members get alerts sent to their email/cell phones whenever a new thread is created in S.O.S. forum so should you post there, sit tight, somebody will be there quickly. Today is the day. Acknowledge The Negative But Dwell On The Positive Video discusses benefits of working on developing a positive attitude about quitting smoking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zbu6onu0N_s&index=33&list=PL4F05C03D0F9B86DB

Welcome Stwine! Thank you for sharing a bit about what you're going through. You're going to be pleasantly surprised how much easier it is to quit than what you're thinking. Sure, you may have your moments but that's where we come in. We'll get you through it so this quit will be permanent and without relapse. If you haven't already done so, please start watching the video series by Joel Spitzer as the videos start addressing various topics day 1 of your quit. Here are a couple of videos later on in the series which you might find interesting. :) Dealing With People Who Try To Undercut Your Quit Video discusses how there may be times when you encounter family members or friends who actually try to undercut your quit. Often they are smokers who feel threatened by your quit, but there are times where non-smokers may encourage you to relapse too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S46gMeHbws Weight Control Concerns After Quitting Smoking Video discusses why many people gain weight after quitting and what steps can be taken to avoid this from happening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgIWjMkoco4 The Importance Of Quitting For Yourself Video discussing the importance of quitting for yourself as opposed to quitting to make other people happy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwYQ6fq9ZCI Why I Recommend Cranberry Juice When First Quitting Smoking Video discusses how cranberry juice can help people when first quitting smoking, but that it use is only helpful during the initial withdrawal period that lasts only 72 hours or less. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVkuOU7MBjQ -

Okay, I guess you can rate members on their profile pages but not individual posts. :)
-
I think we used to be able to rate members and posts with starts but there was a vote and we decided to not use any kind of ranking system. I think the stars are leftover from that time. I can double check and see if it's even an option anymore...

Nope! Not today, not ever!

I watched the same with my Grandfather. Indeed it is cruel, very cruel.

Never give up ...trying to give up...
MarylandQuitter replied to Doreensfree's topic in Quit Smoking Discussions
A lot of people don't make the commitment because they think they're actually giving something up, something they think they enjoy. I believed the same hook line and sinker! Look at what all you're giving up! -

After a very long time of smoking...
MarylandQuitter replied to John's topic in Introductions & About Us
That stale cigarette smoke is horrid. When I smoked, I even noticed it but it wasn't as repulsive as it is now. There is this tavern that I ate at a few times last summer. It had been non-smoking for a long time, probably 10 years or more. The first time I walked in I could smell it. This place had probably been smoked in for well over 100 hundred years. The smoke must have just marinated the walls and large ceiling beams. Glad that you had a plan and know that YOU CAN do all of the same things that you did when you were a smoker. Alcohol is probably the biggest reason, or better yet scenario for relapse. Second only to complacence. Great Job! :) Complacency Video discussing the importance of not allowing yourself to become complacent after longer term success not smoking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZSktbwotI4&index=30&list=PL4F05C03D0F9B86DB -
