I know about the money, both spending it and not having it.

I think I mentioned it before but would it be possible to walk her with a sling under her tummy?

I did that with my lab until he got his back legs back. You would be amazed at how fast they can go with the front legs if you support the back ones.

You're right, Chris, not many people would put so much money into a dog; especially a rescue dog. But you couldn't leave her living in pain, either. You and your family are good people!

 

I'm sorry that Alex is frustrated-- don't you wish you could explain things to them and they would understand? But she does look much more comfortable than in the other photos you showed us. She is making progress. Hang in there both of you. 

She is the hairiest of my children.

 

PS.  It is close with "the boy"... but he has some time before he gets that much hair on his back  :P

Usually by the time we start to head back in... she is walking "tripod" style.  So I give her an aspirin stuffed in some cheese or ham and back in her pin she goes.  16 weeks is a very long time.  The other knee...that I paid double what this one cost... was only 8 weeks and she was back to normal.  But I just did not have that money this time.  Makes me feel bad... but there are alot of folks out there that would not have put almost $5000 into a rescue dog's knees.

Our beagle had the same surgery ,maybe just a few months earlier than alex...

 

The beagle had her right knee (ACL) repaired, and after a month or so, started limping on the left side...the vet gave her some anti-inflammatory pills, and I have tried to keep her from too much activity and it seems to be helping...

 

Like you, I sometimes find it hard to believe how much my "fee" dog is costing me..(she also had problems that caused her to need 2 blood transfusions).....but...I wouldnt change anything...

 

It sounds like your Vet may be a bit pricier than mine..I dont remember exactly what the total was, but i think her 1 acl repair was in the neighborhood of $1500.00  ..and she was putting full weight on it  within weeks..on the other hand...I dont let her off the leash..her nose will take over and shut her hearing off...lol

Alex is ok.  I fear her losing her spirit.  She has always been a go anywhere do anything in the house dog.... she was allowed on furniture and on beds... spoiled rooten. When we moved in, I put up a privacy fence so that she could just roam around the yard.   And now she has been confined to a 5 x 10 pin for 8 weeks.... unfortunately she will be for 8 more weeks.  She is only five... so she has alot of years left to run around.. so I am ok with it.  I am also selfish.... I am walking her for 10 minutes a day...at least three times a day and it is freaking freezing in the mornings and at night.  I want to be able to open the door and let her out.  I am starting to think the squirrels and rabbits are figuring out that she is hurt... they are starting to taunt her.  

 

Joe.... the surgery that she just had was a MRIT.  Short and sweet...it is replacing the tendon with a piece of nylon and then letting the scar tissue build up and protect it....hence the long recovery.  This was $1500.

The first surgery...on the other knee was called a TPLO... it is acually shaving the bone down and changing the angle.  Quicker recovery (8 weeks) and less chance of arthritis.  This was $3200

 

Joe...I don't want to be Debbie Downer...but I did the same as you after the first surgery.  She started limping on the other knee, because she was favoring it so much during recovery, so I pinned her up....started taking her out... and not letting her up and down the stairs...  hoping that this would heal it.  But...unfortunately.... she had already completely torn it.  She was just really good at hiding her pain.  

 

Santa is bringing her alot of treats this year...so she should be content for while.  The snow is really going to pick up here soon... so things will get alittle bit more difficult.

Oh dear, so sorry for the extra long recovery. So hard on all of you. As long as you love her lots and lots, she won't lose her spirit!

Awe Doreen.. you are my favorite.  Shhhhhh,.... don't tell the others.

 

Alex is ok....  I guess.  She is in week 13 of 16 and she does not seem to be progressing any more.  She always struggles to get up when she has been laying for a while and then she limps for a whlle.  She is also getting this strange lump on her knee that is starting to freak me out alittle.  If it does not go away soon, I will have to take her to get it looked at.  Hell...after all the money already spent... what is another visit?  Still taking her out EVERY time.  Walking her around the yard for 10 minutes... 4 times a day.  I tried to take a pict of her laying on the couch when I just went home for my lunch break so I could share it... but my phone sucks.  I somehow have run out of space...and I dont' have very much on it.  Anyways...I am very ready for her to be completely healed.  Would like for life to be back to normal...and I think she would agree.

Hopefully, it is this nasty cold weather causing her to be stiff and limpy. Maybe when the warmer weather arrives she will perk up.

Here she is..... she is laying on the wrong side so you can't really see her newest knee...and as you can tell ...she refuses to look at me when I take her picture...STUBBORN!!!

The lump has not gone away... I am taking her to the vet in the morning so he can look at it.

She is better.  Not limping very much anymore...but the lump is bothering me....so we are going back tomorrow.

LOL she won't look at you... she doesn't want her picture taken, so cute! You should tell her that she is lucky that you don't dress her up for the camera. I hope the lump is nothing... let us know how it goes.
