Trying to quit, having lots of trouble

I'm having a very small meltdown folks! No, I'm not going to smoke because I don't have any, and I'm certainly not going to buy any!  Basically just having an urge which I'm having trouble dealing with!  It's almost 2 weeks quit for me, but I still do get the urges.  Definitely not as bad as the first week, but they are still there!! 😬 I just want to wake up one day and not think about smoking!  I know it all has been less than the first week, as I said, but the urge and thoughts are still there.  I want them to go away!! I'm so impatient! 🙄

Hi, Sandi. I am sorry that the cravings are agonizing. I can relate. I white-knuckled it through the early days of my quit, too. Some days were ok, others super sucked. It goes in waves. But if you st

Hang in there and do what every you have to and get through it.

The longer you don't smoke, the easier it gets.

Thanks, I know that.  It's not even 2 weeks yet, so is this normal? It's just so freaken hard, as you know!  I just wish the cravings would totally go away and I want to forget that I ever smoked!

@Sandi149 yes it's completely normal and to be expected at this early stage. As you've already noticed though they're not as bad as week one so just keep hanging in there because the only way past is through....

You know what I wish!!  I Wish that I never started smoking when I was 17, and that was a very long time ago!! Back in the day I used to smoke pot, I don't smoke it anymore ,(haven't smoke it in so many years, even though it's legal in NY, I don't like it and don't like the way it makes me feel). I used to like it as a teenager, but not anymore. When I smoked pot, I smoked cigarettes because it would enhance the "high" of the marijuana. But that was years ago, and I don't smoke pot anymore!

Ditto to wishing I’d never started smoking! I smoked my first cigarette when I was 8. Was a regular smoker by my mid teens, and up to a pack a day by college. More than 40 years of smoking. So much money wasted, so much health sacrificed, so many relationship stressors… so much stink!! If I could visit myself as a kid I’d slap me upside the head. But all we can do today is face forward. Now matters a lot, and quitting is the best way to make the most of the time that lies ahead. So NOPE!

Wow!! 8 years old for your first cigarette!! Yeah I get it...I totally get it all!  Its just so difficult when I have marital problems and just life problems and a mother who is not doing very well. 😢

It’s totallyyyy normal Sandi, the crazy urges, emotions, feelings…it was damn hard sometimes and I’m telling you, it’ll very soon get better and less crave-y.  I do smoke a little ganj, it’s legal here too, but I waited a month or so after I quit to not mess w my mind about “smoking”.  I haven’t drank though since I quit bc that was a biggg association for me.  You’ll find a good outlet for u, and I’m sorry for the family stuff u have going on 🙁. We’re here for u!

You’re doing GREAT gf!

I had a big argument with my best friend today over which type of salmon is better!!  It was ridiculous but it's cause I'm so stressed out!  I was having a few drinks while I was cooking and texting her.  It was not easy while I was cooking. But, now is OK...I think I'm over it for the most part!

Cooking and cleaning and right after the shower were the worst triggers for me, idk why lol. It’ll get better ❤️

@Sandi149, I drank too when I first quit and just made sure I stayed home so I had no access to cigarettes and it actually helped when I did go out, on my one monthaversary,  I didn't crave a cigarette at all. But I did stay home that whole first month

It seems that I take out my frustrations on the people that I care about the most and this is not good!  It's almost 2 weeks since I had a cigarette so the nicotine is out of my system, then why am I still getting physical urges?  I get that feeling in my mouth sometimes just like I did the first week of not smoking.

Sandi I still tell my hubs and fam I’m sorry for being a complete biotch, bc I was totally that for a good month, month and a half.  I was brutal to them.  I think it’s just part of the grief we go through when quitting. These amazing ppl here would tell me it just takes time, we put how many years into smoking, it’s gonna take some time to do that not only physically, but mentally/emotionally too. ❤️  The straw with a tiny piece of cotton ball in it really helps me w the mouth feel. I still use it sometimes.

I had a similar experience.  It felt like the craves would never end, but they did.  and they will for you to as long as you stay quit.  my best weapon to fight the craves was walking.  Venting on this forum was a help as well.  Things will get better for you, it just takes longer than any of us would like.

Hi, Sandi. The cravings, irritability and unmoored feelings persist for a while because the addiction has burrowed itself into us so deeply. It affected us emotionally and behaviorally as well as physically. Gaining your freedom is not just about clearing your body of nicotine, although that’s an essential and very powerful first step. The work of quitting continues after that, coping with the emotional and habitual fallout. It made me grouchy with a very short fuse for a while. Most of the deep breathing I did in the first few weeks of my quit was not about cravings, it was about self-management when I wanted to whap people’s heads off!

But you’ll make it thru this, Sandi. The last two weeks of not smoking have built your “quit muscles” and given you the strength to cope with both the cravings and the grumpies. And there are silver linings. Quitting teaches us to be less impulsive and to use the “power of the pause” before acting on our urges… especially since those urges go a little bonkers for a while! Just stick with it. You may feel a bit crazy, but you are making HUGE progress.

P.S. And find some creative ways of apologizing… I had to do that more than once early in my quit. Regardless of how others responded, which was usually (tho not always) with understanding and humor, it helped me feel less unhinged to keep my side of the street clean in that way.

I am tooting my own horn tonight!! It's almost 3 weeks, Yay!  I still have urges every day,  still lots of urges  many, especially in the morning with my coffee, but I'm hanging in there.  In addition to the usual cravings, I am struggling with marital problems!  Is there a forum on here for that? I hope there is, But, I haven't smoked in almost 19 days, even with all my problems....so YAY!!! ME!!!!! 😁

Well done @Sandi149, you survived the three hardest weeks of them all! You so got this now :) We have a vent thread in our Off the Record forum that a lot of us use to get things off our chest, maybe that topic will help you at least get it off your chest?
