May 23, 201412 yr ok the vet called and the good news is that lady's amylase levels are fine the bad news the thing on her leg is probably a tumor that needs to be removed (not quickly no immediate danger or anything) and the worse news is that it will cost 800 dollars I think 200 of that might be sending it to a histology lab IDK.......it needs to come off obviously and the vet said we can wait a month but good lord this free dog is costing me plenty she is only 4 years old so that is one of the deciding factors in it also. Hate that it comes down to cost and crap
May 23, 201412 yr Ouch, sorry to hear this. Vets bills are outrageous here too - if you don't have insurance, you're pretty much screwed..! I hope everything turns out OK for her.
May 23, 201412 yr We saved this year going to a shot day at food store. I had a work K9 who got a cancer lump. 7000 dollars and three weeks of driving him 3 hours to Cleveland and then picking him up Friday. Lived 4 more years. Final vet bill for back treatment which failed and cost of putting him down was 1800. Lucky there was fund for k9 killed which was paying hurt dogs bills.

May 26, 201412 yr I feel for ya Lisa :( we were in somewhat the same situation... when my youngest was in High school, she wanted her own dog..I was somewhat against it...i didn't want to take care of another dog..she assured me she would take care of it..yep..I ended up with a beagle when she went off to college...initial cost was free....since then , she has gotten sick and required a blood transfusion to save her..and tore her ACL..which required surgery to repair...we are a few thousand dollars into a free beagle at this point...all in all.....money well spent ;) I felt the need to edit this...i meant to say ...all in all money well spent on a beagle that has become fat and lazy...lol...rabbits doesn't interest her...only her food dish does ;) (she is 11 years old this June)
May 27, 201412 yr This is funny to me....cause I was just having this conversation yesterday. My bitch (please see avatar) was a rescue dog. And she was a good price...free. Well at the beginning of this year we had a $3000 TPLO surgery for her torn ACL and then over the weekend...she was limping and sometimes holding her other leg up. I am pretty sure my lovely wife will want to divorce me if I drop another 3.... but what do you do??? Yeap..she will be getting another surgery...YIKES!!! No such thing as a free lunch.

I'm all for ''don't shop, adopt'', if weren't for my cats I would do that myself. But I do believe that when deciding to get a dog from the shelter the low cost shouldn't be a deciding factor. Like ever. And if you do, one should never think of it as a ''free dog''. Sorry, it just looks bizarre. Try to imagine this same situation but replace the dogs with a ''baby''. I think no one would be here complaining that their ''free (or relatively free)'' baby is costing them a fortune through doctor bills.

By the way, there is nothing that wrong with paying for a breed dog under certain circumstances.
May 28, 201412 yr I'm sorry Frez your dog has a tumor. Vet bills can rise very high when you love your pet and want it to live. But that's the responsibility as owners, I nourish my guinea pigs as my cat.

By the way, there is nothing that wrong with paying for a breed dog under certain circumstances. first of all like chrispy said dont judge I was making an ironic statement sorry if you could not tell that.....I would never pay for a dog again at least the crazy high prices of a particular breed or such not necessary when there are dogs that need to be rescued and mixed dogs are the best pets in my opinion I am slightly offended that you would come onto my thread and judge me me for my words about my pups........they are my babies all my pets are and since you do not know me do not judge my words either.
