With lockdown 2.0 in Sictoria the science boffs at Phillip Island have been live streaming the nightly penguin parade...this is a big v tourist attraction down here...and something every self respecting Victorian has done at least once in their life.....Sat at sunset on freezing cold beach watching little penguins come home to rest after a day of fishing.... @Doreensfree has been, and she has seen the city ones too....but you can all watch now too if you want....it's about 6pm Melbourne time so 9am in UK...um 1am in Cali and 4am on the American north east coast....So I know its real early for the yanks and maple leafers....but its super cute and free...so if your up and board or can't sleep check it out.

Until the eighties these were called Fairy Penguins but now they are just called Little Penguins because some people took offence to fairy. They are more a dark blue and white than black. Any of you mob make your way down here once the boarders reopen I'll sit on the beach with ya to watch this.

I didn't know you even had penguins in Aussie. Never heard about Phillip Island. Looks tres cool! The small penguins are so cute 😍 and I don't use that term often! Thanks for the tip. Hopefully, Ill have a sleep issue around 4:00 AM :)

They are super cute. It's awesome in real life...even when it's cold, sitting on the beach waiting for them to come in...and you see a little group swimming in and then the waves push them back out.in and out, in and out getting closer and closer...it's awesome when they f finally make it.

Phillip island is awesome and at the top of my post lockdown list of things to do....its where the Aussie motorcycle gp is held....dogs are banned cvos of th ed penguins ....The Nobbies are there...and roos...after you see the parade (the penguins coming  in) you need to check under your car before you  leave for stray penguins...and when you are walking you have to give way to them. We have a fe w colonies along the coast, even some at St Kilda beach which is in the heart of Melbourne. There is a really cute kids movie about the colony near warnambool (where you go for whale watching) and a dog. If you can find it online and dfont mind kids animal movies check out Oddball...its a true story too.

It's a twofa tonight...there is a bush turkey (whick looks more like a chicken that the turkeys you lot are used to) gate crashing the parade and its scaring some of the little fellas...which is kinda funny.

Thanks so much Jo.  My husband and I have run out of things to watch.  I did not know you had penguins either.  So cute!

  • 2 weeks later...

Ticking upward here too this past week or so - just a bit though so far. Kids are back in school now so we'll see what effect that has on anything.

Parents had the option of sending kids to school or keeping them home with online learning (which I personally think is a joke and will do kids a great injustice if it continues for much longer) but, I got no kids in school any more so ..............

I sort of get the feeling people, especially the younger folk, are just tired of all this distancing stuff and no parties/get together's etc. and were ramping things up a little too much come end of summer, which is Labour day tradition here. September = autumn and that's held true this year with temps dropping to about 1/2 of what they were a couple weeks ago.

Will be interesting though to see what happens now that the cooler weather is coming at least in my neck of the woods. More indoor activities = greater risk of transmission I think. I haven't dined at an indoor restaurant yet. Been to a couple that had outdoor patio areas while the weather was nice but that ship has sailed now for us so, although there's no official lock-down, it will be a self imposed lock down for the foreseeable future for me and I'm OK with that :)

Frankly, this summer, I have never eaten better. BBQ'ing almost every day. Steaks, rack of lamb, baby-back-ribs - you name it, we've had it and it's way less cost than eating out and much of it is better tasting! May have gained a bit of weight but enjoyed every minute eating scrumptious food 🤗  Yeah, I'm no vegan or vegetarian, that's for sure. I'm sure it's not as healthy but while I have life, there's quality of life to consider and .... I choose meat 👍

Merseyside has been put on the watch list ....I tell you ...we are heading for a Lockdown ....

Perhaps but I'm not sure lockdowns are the best solution. Destroys the economy which in turn creates undue hardship for all. It's all about wearing a mask to reduce (not eliminate) the risks, keep your proper distance at ALL times and keep your wanderings to necessary outings - not party-party stuff. The real problem is, some people (actually quite a few) are NOT prepared to sacrifice their pleasure/fun time for as long as they need to in order to gain back their complete freedom. Kinda like quitting smoking isn't it?

The beginning of this new College/University season has been a problem around here too! Lots of gatherings with little to no distancing protocol and no masks (plus mucho alcohol I expect)! One of the reasons cases are ticking upward here as well 😞

https://www.kingstonist.com/news/queens-prof-calls-for-action-after-dozens-of-weekend-parties-downtown/

I went into our local little store yesterday ....It was packed ....

How many wore a mask....1....yes me ....that was it ....

They looked at me as if I was a alien ....

What's the matter with this people.....why carnt they just be polite ,and follow the rules ...

Whether they believe it helps of not ..

Well as of the county update yesterday there are now 431 health care workers who have tested positive. It just sucks that the people who are there to help us can't stay safe from it themselves 😞

It's so good to see new tv programming on but so different now. Everyone is either virtual or six feet apart or a combination of both. Peoples Court, my lunch time show, has tv screens for the plaintiff, defendant and judge and the bailiff is the only one in the courtroom. Dr. Phil, my morning coffee show has his audience on a zoom like app displayed on three big screens on the stage and him and his guests are all six feet apart. Our new normal I guess..............................

People's Court lol. I haven't watched that show in probably 30 or 40 years! Didn't even know if was still on! Isn't that the show the had Judge Woppner (sp?) and his trusty bailiff Rusty?

I don't much like the new way they have interviews or discussions with others. Especially when they do it by Skype 🤬 You end up hearing every 3rd or 4th word only and then the video freezes - so maddening!! Why haven't they come up with more reliable audio/video communication platform? Or does it just boil down to money? Skype's free so you get what you pay for I guess 😏

Speaking of reruns, the TV station that we watch the morning news on here plays nothing but retro TV shows all day after the news. They change them up every once in awhile. Right now they're playing shows like Matlock with Andy Griffith, Fantasy Island (Boss .... da plane Boss!), Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies; all kinds of olden golden goodies 😀
