  1. It's so nice to see my old buddies at qsmb like Jordan7, Pearlie, Whispers, Johnny5 and Jillar and my new buddies here too. I was just so glad I had quit. It literally saved my life so far because there's no way I would've got tested if I was still smoking. And you're absolutely right PeaceTrain how so many smokers live in a state of denial about the risks and only find out when it is too late. I had many failed attempts before my final quit and I really do believe the difference was the online support and the education about all the lies of nicotine addiction that I had believed for so many years. It's funny that nowadays the place that reeks the most of stale cigarette smoke is the waiting room for chemotherapy, which I finished a year and a half ago.
  2. Some days I wish I could forget all about ever having lung cancer. I haven't figured out how to put it behind me and just get on with living life. This disease is one of the scariest consequences of smoking and some ex-smokers will one day get diagnosed too, sorry to say that. The risk is lower the less years you have smoked. So the best thing you can do is either get a chest xray regularly or, what is much better, a low dose ct scan. Lung cancer, if it is caught early, well you have a chance to live for a long time whereas if it is only caught when a person has symptoms then it is a different story.
  3. Congratulations on joining the Lido deck, Beazel.
  4. Nice to see some of my old friends from QSMB and new quitter friends on QT. Besides having my son, quitting is the best thing I ever did. I forgot to mention that my quit is strong and I've not had any relapse. I go for long periods of time without ever thinking about cigs or that I was a smoker who quit on July 14, 2015. Really proud of that as I know you all are too with your quits. KTQ. Not one puff ever! I was one of those unfortunate people who was diagnosed with lung cancer after I quit smoking. My mother, who never smoked, died early of cancer so after I quit, I asked for a bunch of checks including, finally, a chest xray. I didn't have any symptoms and that xray caught a 2 cm lung cancer that was operated and then I had chemo too. Still happy to be alive. I wrote a lot about my lung cancer journey and got great support during that time at the QSMB, and I am grateful for that.
  5. Hi Jordon7, Stopped back for a visit. Great to see you here too and congrats on 3 years. That's super!
  6. Hi Everyone, I joined awhile ago but took a break for awhile. Sorry to see the QSMB is down again and from the sound of it, might be permanent. Anyway just wanted to let those who know me hear that I'm still alive.
  7. I want to also second this. Fear of the unknown is the worst fear. Fear is there because it helps us stay alive. It also there because it helps us cooperate or figure out who to trust, or well fear is a valid emotion. Just on the premise of it. Just like anything else fear has a dark side and for me the darkest side of fear personally was the fear that made me afraid to really let go of my addiction. not sure exactly what it was but finally i overcome it and trust me if you can overcome cigarette addiction you can deal with the emotional consequences of a lung cancer diagnosis and treatment and know you did what you could for your family to stay alive... and for peace of mind. But I basically agree mostly with Sarge.
  8. Hi Feely, You will feel relieved when you get a clear result and can have peace of mind. If not they may have nipped something in the bud and you can get treatment before it is too late. There are a lot of times too that there are small nodes that need to be watched for growth. Of course we were (most) in denial when we were smokers but that doesn't take the fear away when you first confront it. It will get easier later on to deal with.
  9. There are lots of reasons to feel lonely after you quit Feely. Not everyone's story is as bereft of human contact as the widow. It's true your social life will change as a result of quit smoking too. For the better. That's right Jenny... if you behave this way then you are addict. I don't think a person can successfully quit without making this realization in the long run. These are hard realizations and also show an immediate benefit to quitting.. That's what happens to people down the line with smoking SanDar. On mother's day. Well there are also lots of cheerful mother's days among all the quitters. Just one mother's day is a gift.
  10. Jules, the best advise is to commit to NOPE and stick with that. The problem with alcohol and well, some other drugs, is that their use lowers inhibitions and can also be a smoking trigger long after... because of what you learned about after 2 packs of cigs with a hangover.. It's always potentially more risky a situation. The main thing is to be able to be able to recognize if you are truly in danger of losing your quit and leave the situation if you are. Or get on chat with a crisis guru who has promised to always talk you through or your facebook friends,... but the main point is to plan an escape if you are getting triggered heavily it is really unpleasant anyway and you will be relieved to get away. KTQ!
  11. To all the lurkers: quitting and letting go of the addiction is the biggest mother's or father's day, or birthday present you could ever give yourself. Just do it!
  12. Nina the Quitter posted this in a different thread. I don't know how to quote it here properly... these are sound words for whenever a person is having an addiction crises, no matter how early or late it happens in the quit: Pre Respond to your own SOS Posted by Nina the Quitter on 06 May 2017 - 10:20 AM in The S.O.S. Board Hang in there, you are tougher than this. Remember all the times you had to go to the store because you were out of cigarette. Remember making your friends and family wait for you, while you smoked a cigarette, before you got in the car, after a meal at the restaurant, before getting on a flight. Remember having to find a place to smoke. Walking long ways at the hospital because you had to get off the property completely, then having to smoke two in a row because it took so long to get to the smoking place. All the while Mum was in her room waiting for you to get back. Remember missing moments because you had to find someplace to smoke. Remember thinking and planning about when and where you could smoke for every occasion, road trips, plane trips, movies. Take a look at all the money you have saved. OTM Now make a present for yourself... like this one example: I smoked at least 3/4 pack a day at $14.50 CAN which is $326 a month. Devote a fraction of that money to yourself.. on presents to yourself. Now $326 a month is (ok get ready for this) $3915 a year. So now make a decision, what is the fraction you are going to spend on yourself. Be generous. I decided to spend it on benefitting my health from all the damage that smoking did. That's things like good walking sticks, the right gear.. a gym membership, physio even a monthly massage can get in under that budget. About the skin damage from smoking. I meant to say it isn't only wrinkles, or indeed age spots, it's the whole complexion and the breakdown of collagen support. I am experiencing real results with rf frequency treatment for collagen regeneration.. I had a terrible pallor also after chemotherapy. I'm one of those middle age people whose life expectancy went up considerably from one year to the next. Because i got an xray after I quit smoking and found out i had lung cancer. Get a ct-scan if you can, or if not get a chest xray. You might be one of those like me and a few others I know whose life will be saved. 14.50*3/4*30 Search Results Ans = 326.25 326.25
  13. The main problem with smoking is that addiction drives people to kill and maim themselves. The addiction is first and the maiming is later.. and sequela of addiction down the road for those who succeed to get away from that, to break the cycle of addiction once and for all... well that's the main concern of forums like quittrain.com deal with but there are other issues... especially if you think about how to avoid the negative sequela of smoking down the line... So here's OTM's advise: Wear sunscreen on your face every day if you can with zinc oxide. It is not just the wrinkles but age spots, ghastly complexion, collagen draining .. the combination of sun damage and smoking... one is already enough, two is truly too much. You will see it after you turn 50 especially if you are woman. You will look in the mirror and see that you have smoked. It will be there foro the rest of your life. Men have thicker and more resiliant skin (about 20% thicker), but this is for both men and women.. Do yourself a big favor and protect your face especially from the sun every day... with sun screen or mineral sunscreen powder that has zinc oxide. Be sure it avoid any substances that have been recently determined to be toxic to humans or to reefs or to the planet generally.
  14. so at 10:36 am this morning my son turned in his application to the master's in computer science program at dal. Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty we are free at last.' - Martin Luther King Jr.
  15. it's the addict mindset that gets broken... once and for all.
  16. best mother's day present ever. A bouquet of flowers from my son will arrive soon. I am lost as to how to post this. i have it on my google drive. i can't load google drive onto my mac. it just won't move over to the applications folder when i try to drag it on installation. that is one little thing. the next is how do i post an image. from google drive or from downloads folder i tried control command v and nothing happend. i have uploaded a screen shot and hit 'add to post' we will see what this looks like and gravatar should have deployed by now lovely day today folks. my ankle is feeling alot better and i carried 20 lbs of groceries home 2K steps...
  17. Getting though somehow another major trigger day with my son, of all things.. but he is much better finally and i hope on his way out of his worries... he ended up doing a stellar job on his application after procrastinating and thinking about it every day since last Nov and i really felt sorry for him, but I tried the ends of my patience after months and the last days and the endless hours and i'm not oging to do it and then changing his mind just to distract him from one task to another was the trick... i am so happy that i quit smoking, it literally saved my life. it is why i am healthy alive today rather than very sick alive today.

A special thanks to Pearlie for reaching out and being Pearlie. so i was doing totally the wrong thing yesterday wasting hundreds of dollars and not getting anywhere except an incomprehensible website about bbpress i defnitely do not recommend the wordpress business plan to do what i am trying to accomplish. So I cancelled that after finding someone to chat who explained how i was wasting my money, and it is true i was. he was right. I am not so happy with the rest of our chat and realize that the communication problem of needing to repeat the same thing over and over again even though i had already said it was important and getting runarounds instead of honest answers to my questions. Main concern is security. Anyone who wants to help me right now and is an expert on security send me the best article you know of to maximize security in wordpress with least effort. I do want to understand security before putting up anything and getting blown off on a consult with a ridiculous answer to a security question made me realize i am not going with this guy but will pay him for his chat time on google. this is the worldwide license for onthemark. there's a detailed discussion on the landscape of copyright and online forums in the private room "off the record". 21. they say time is money but it really isn't. time is so much more precious..
  22. Money, money, money... what to do with all the money i save by not smoking? Since my 'red' cigs were $14.50 CAN when I quit... at first I didn't really know what to do with all the money i was saving. i strongly urge everryone to set aside a fixed percent of that (it can be 100% it can be 10%)... we are not all in the same financial position... but whatever it is you gotta actually spend that money extra on yourself. Then of course that depends on what you like... a vacation.. weekly massages... physio.. a gym membership... rf frequency laser treatment for all the damages that smoking has done to your face ... or brownies or raspberries or a great pair of shoes.. whatever is your fancy. but do spend some of that money on yourself, or on what you really do care about it life... but anyway it's important to give steady rewards to yourself.

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
