I can't tie my shoes very good. Left handed and as a kid nobody could figure out how to show me. Older neighbor was lefty too. So he couldn't tie shoes good either and taught me one night while whole neighborhood was drinking fun juice and smoking funny ones. This was 1970's and thinking back, probably the best time ever to be a kid. We had Elton John and evil knevil. We had rock and roll blue jeans and vans with bubble Windows, cans with pull off tabs. Bruce Jenner was a hero and cars had v8 motors. But all that fun didn't have too many rules about healthy living or what is good for people wasn't pushed to hard. No seat belts. Stand up and look out car windows, drink out of a hose and play with fireworks. But anyways getting back to shoes... I make two loops (I call them bows) and tie them in a knot. Done.

In current day trends the age for learning to tie shoes has approximately doubled due to velcro and slip on shoes being the norm.  Often children aren't learning to tie shoes until well into elementary school.    

 

 

my question is....what are people learning instead of these things?   

I was brought up in Liverpool in the fifties....shoes with laces would have been a luxury...lol...

My son's a lefty...his wife a lefty...thier two children lefty,s...they can all draw well...

Lefty here as well. I also grew up in the fifties/sixties. I had a first grade teacher who tried to convince me that I was writing with the wrong hand. 

And then my mom went to the school and tried to convince the teacher that maybe she was in the wrong occupation.   ^_^

I still use my right hand as my "scissors cutting" hand. I can probably thank that first grade teacher for that.  ;)

It all looks a bit complicated left handed. 

 

That said Chris showed my lefty daughter how to tie shoelaces so perhaps a commute....

 

I feel sorry for today's children, the 70s and 80s were where it was to grow up. I can't even let my 10 year old go to the shop alone as some older kids robbed a youngers kids bike! So then you worry and don't want to let them out of your sight, but how do they gain any independence??

Don't forget the lawn darts.  HolyH*llHanna!  How many of us came close to taking one of those things to the neck at a backyard bbq?  Yikes.

Holy SH*T!  We used to take jumps with our big wheels but damn.....never over fire!!!  lol  The 70's and 80's were awesome.  We played outside and when the street lights came we knew it was time to get home. I can remember occasionally coming home a bit earlier and being sent back out because my mother wasn't done with her housework yet and didn't want us under foot.  Like you Marti, I can't let my kids have that kind of freedom.  It's just not safe enough.  

My childhood was tough but we made our own fun, mum freely admits now that she was a tiger mum, urh yeah that's why we were out 12 hours a day lol

 

Had to be in by a certain time or get a wallop, made it worth it by staying out even later :)

 

My nephew couldn't tie laces as always had Velcro his new step dad going on at him for no being able to at his age, I said have you taken time and taught him, no, well there you go dumb ass!

 

Perfectly acceptable to have slip on shoes at your age bakon ;)
