August 19, 201412 yr Some people won't agree with me but my hb went out tonight and got, and wants to continue to buy dog food that is like 20 bucks for a tiny bag that barely lasts a week per dog. There has GOT to be a middle of the road dog food, that is not costing us $40 a week just in dry food. He acts like I'm being selfish, but we are not rich and to me, this is crazy. Crazy.
August 19, 201412 yr Ava, I've heard of people making their own. Time consuming, but more cost effective.
August 19, 201412 yr I feed BLUE which is about 52 for less than 40 pounds. Think 35 pound bag. But I agree it's a lot.
August 19, 201412 yr Medium road but still very good is any purrina PROPLAN. Feed this for years to police and shutzhund dogs with good results
August 19, 201412 yr Petflow.com I use taste of the wild on my dogs because it is grain free and one of the best out there. It is reasonably priced. A 30lb bag lasts my 3 big ass dogs about 2 weeks.
August 19, 201412 yr I get about two weeks on 35 pounds with a German Shepard and Belgian malinois With good food less is needed. I feed two times a day at about 1 1/2 -2 cups per dog each time. Slightly more when more active.
August 19, 201412 yr Author It has to be lamb and rice, evidently that is the only thing Bostons can eat. The lady we bought the dog from said don't buy purina, and we'd been feeding our yorkie kibbles and bits forever. Now all the sudden everyone has to have royal canin or some shiz. I just think like Iams or something not crazy expensive, but evidently that is not good enough. Have to feed them diamonds or I'm a heartless B...but it's a huge fight, and he already bought the food, so now we can't change their food again. Ugh. I'm seriously mad.
August 19, 201412 yr My dog eats out of the liter box. He seems happy and less for me to clean up...win win if you ask me :)

August 19, 201412 yr Tell him Sarge thinks he's crazy, too. The Sarge's don't spend $40 a month between both of 'em on people food. Easy Peasy

August 19, 201412 yr This is really a complicated subject. We feed our little dogs dry Iams dog food for years. They seem okay with it. I rarely feed them table scraps, cuz I don't want them to beg, and cuz their sensitive stomachs don't tolerate anything. My big dog is not really happy with boring dry food. He eats it cuz otherwise he would starve. He likes table scraps and doesn't puke if you feed him a lilte leftover baked beans (not so much with the little dogs).
August 19, 201412 yr If I had the time, I would make homemade dog food cuz I think it would be ultimately less expensive and better for the dog, but. "Ain't nobody got time for that!"
August 19, 201412 yr I feed my dogs blue because lady has a sensitive belly and pukes on the cheap stuff....I have found though that with the higher quality foods they do not eat as much because more nutrients are absorbed so the 52 dollar bag lasts about 2 weeks with 3 dogs (one of them is a puppy) so the cost is actually about the same as buying cheaper crap I would not buy anything with corn as an ingredient because dogs do not digest corn well and it is more of a filler ingredient so they would have to eat more. I do . I think purina makes a natural dog food not sure on the price of it though https://www.beyondpetfood.com/products/dog/simply-9/ranch-raised-lamb-whole-barley/ I also have to boil hamburger and rice for Lady because of her tummy issues. I feed my cat blue buffalo also he was having kidney issues and the vet wanted him on their very expensive food I looked at the ingredients of both foods and he has done better on blue buffalo he has had no problems with his kidney in years. I dont think 52 bucks every 2-3 weeks is too bad for decent dog food not for 3 dogs anyway.
August 19, 201412 yr Serious? That's awesome. I'm gonna, too. This is not a good long term financial plan. Have ya seen Sarge's garden? https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.745171265503443.1073741840.100000317292043&type=1&l=235fd942e5 We get about 80% of our food from the yard. For free. Easy Peasy
August 19, 201412 yr We go out to dinner the food part is $40 and the alcohol another $40 sometimes. Our grocery bill has been under 40 for months. Kitchen is just where we open the mail right now. Wife taste buds coming back so this could change. Been going out cause the cooking smells and tastes were all out of wack. Cant grow beef in a garden and God gave me the pointy teeth (third ones back on the top) to tear into meat, not taters and corn. Good dog food is worth it. Never heard a breed need specific meat like lamb. Chicken is very common ingredient and the norm for most. Salmon BLUE is pretty expensive and good for coats, but makes dog smell too.
August 19, 201412 yr My dogs side eyed me when I gave them the salmon food and dear gods did they stink. They like the duck or the lamb in the brand that I get. Beast's (my shepherd) allergies went away almost immediately when I changed to this food. Midian's (my oldest boxer) tumors stopped growing at such a rapid rate. He put on weight (instead of losing) and is still doing well despite his cancer. Mayhem (little boxer) hasn't been having issues with her allergies either. The cheaper brands that you find in the stores are all fillers and they can cause all sorts of issues.
August 19, 201412 yr I agree with what DD just said...we switched our 2 dogs to Blue....lamb and rice...and all the allergies went away..My beagle was constantly getting ear infections....hasnt had ANY since switching about 1 year ago...The wifes bichon would develop "hot spots"...chewing all the fur off in one area...since switching he never has bald spots! .the only problem I have seen, is my beagle LOVES to eat, and since this tastes so much better, she is more than willing to eat both bowls we put out...poor Baxter (the bichon)...doesnt stand a chance with an eating machine of a beagle ;)
August 19, 201412 yr Author Well I knew not everyone would agree with me, but I just am still not happy about this at all. Seems there would have to be decent dog found that would not necessitate me getting a second job. I drink maxwell house for Pete's sake. Not a wealthy woman.
August 19, 201412 yr Lol.. I understand where you are coming from though. It is expensive. What about making them homemade dog food? That might be the healthy cheaper alternative? Lisa is right when she says that you feel them less because there are less fillers so it really turns out to be the same price. I am on my phone so I will find more for you later buthttp://www.moneycrashers.com/homemade-dog-food-treat-recipes/http://m.allrecipes.com/recipe/140286/homemade-dog-food http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/issues/15_7/features/Home-Prepared-Dog-Food-Nutritional-Information_20568-1.html http://thebark.com/content/save-money-homemade-dog-food http://thefrugalfind.com/homemade-dog-food-recipe/

I was having issues with my dog (see avatar) and some allergic reactions. I switched to Diamond (http://www.diamondpet.com/) lamb and rice. I spend $40 on a 40 lbs bag and it lasts about 3-4 weeks. It has really helped her. Good food at a decent price.

Hb finally came around to my way of thinking. No more rare emerald encrusted dog food. I don't think I'd be able to make my own, I'm not that good in the kitchen.
