The trajectory looks much more promising today. Hopefully it stays out to sea all the way up the coast and brings only heavy thunderstorms to the coastal states.

That's what I'm hoping for! Though it will be a few days before we even really know if it's going to change again. Gotta love Florida and as they say 'If you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes'.

It is looking more like North Carolina will be impacted, although it is looking more possible Dorian may stay off the coast.

So now they have a plane inside the eye of the hurricane!

Wow! That would be such a cool job, flying into the eye of active hurricanes to collect important data!

Would be one hell of a ride getting into then out of the eye though 😮

There is a lot of controversy going on tonight about the storm.  Many models are moving West again and delaying the turn North.

The weather blog has been insane tonight, the hurricane hunter planes went in and gathered new information.  Tomorrow, we will know more.

Don't let your guard down, things can change rapidly.

The bad news is all about The Bahamas, Abaco right now.  It is a really devastating storm, and they are in the bulls eye.

I have friends who live on Harbour Island - just off the north-eastern coast of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. They have been pounded before by hurricanes. I have seen the damages after the fact while visiting them in the past. It was horrible. Hope they don't fair too badly with this one 🙏

Gaining strength...waiting for the turn North.  Dorian is so strong, it is creating its own environment and not as susceptible to the weak steering patterns presented.

Today and tonight will be very interesting...and frightening.  The island of Abaco in the Bahamas is getting a direct hit now.  Unimaginable conditions.

180 mph sustained wins as of the 11:00 advisory.  The strongest hurricane on record in the Bahamas area according to TWC.

Those islands are pretty small places compared to the mainland and there's just no where safe for people to go unless they get off the islands and leave their homes behind and most don't do that or don't have the where-with-all to do it. I can't imagine having to go through that kind of horror on one of those islands 😮

Yes - dreadful indeed! It's a Cat 5 storm now with winds at 185 mph (that's 300 km/hr). It's right over Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas (just north of where my friends live)  Noting withstands those winds and then there's the tidal surge plus the volume of rain. This isn't good.

Prayers to those in it's path 🙏

Hurricane warning now in effect for Merritt island 😞

 

My parents have a place at the beach on one of the islands slightly north of Wilmington, NC.

 

Their neighbor is a hilarious good ole boy whose antics would probably fit in the "Redneck or Genius" thread.  He never leaves for a hurricane, even last year's Hurricane Florence (which was a direct hit on that island and did some damage to my parents' place).

 

The current projected path of this storm takes it just a few miles off the coast of their place.  Doesn't matter, that neighbor is currently stocking up on beer and will be riding this one out too. 

I'm waiting for Levi's nightly report and will post.

Man! Those poor people on the Abaco Islands! Next looks like Freeport will take a direct hit as well!

Even though they're thinking it will likely not cross Florida, it will still have a vast impact on so many along the entire eastern seaboard. May even still be damaging when it reaches Atlantic Canada, although the icy Canadian waters tend to kill those storms pretty quickly!
