New and wondering how to quit with mental illness?
greatcall73 replied to shy's topic in Introductions & About Us
I, too, have a mental health disorder and this disorder has made me relapse to cigarettes everyday for a long time. I quit today. Yay me! I am doing cessation - had to have a patch. The saving grace is I am now a full fledged born again Christian. I was happy to see someone out there like me who identifies smoking with mental illness. You are me. I am drug free 11 years 6 months and kicking cigarettes is a hard thing to master, but have hope because I know if I can do it living with a smoking parent than so can you. Dying to bolster and take this patch off and move beyond taste. 3 days to go til the Nic is gone. I pray you be strong, encouraged, and tempered by your own spirituality. -

@DenaliBlues Thank you so much I ain't gonna lie I did smoke when I got home still trying to figure this thing out but I'm willing to abstain longer than usual and I think I am really close to breaking through that doorway to freedom. I will definitely keep you all updated and thank you for the kind encouraging words. I have to do this! I can do this and I will. Thank you. -

Welcome to the network @shy! So glad that you found us! I’m glad that you have a trusted mental health provider. Now is definitely the time to lean on them - because there will be mental, emotional and physical ups and downs to navigate as you quit. Not gonna sugar coat it, withdrawal sucks. So marshall all your resources… including this board. Learn all you can about addiction, too. That really helps, as others have said. But even as you prepare for tough times, don’t be surprised if your mental health actually IMPROVES once you finally quit! No more cognitive dissonance. No more worry about each cough or palpitation. Freedom from shame. Freedom from that sense of failure. Doing something life-affirming that you will feel so freaking proud of. All of these gifts, and more, await you on the other side of withdrawal. I always thought quitting would consign me to a life of pins and needles and misery and longing. But I was wrong… that was my addiction serving up some stinkin thinkin to keep me hooked. The truth is that I am calmer, complete, and more independent without nicotine. It’s a beautiful thing. You CAN do this. And we’re here to encourage and support you. Keep us posted on how things are going! -
Hey, Sandi. Sorry to be late to the party, but I wanted to wish you a VERY HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! I remember your early days here… you were having a truly grim time, but you wanted to be free so badly, and you leaned into the support here. And look at you now!!! Finally free, and paying it forward as one of our fabulous moderators. Your perseverance despite your cravings made you a true quitting Wonder Woman! Congrats, dear.

Well it's been a struggle since starting this but I did go to my nieces awards ceremony today and it was so nice not to smell like smoke with all those people around. It was a push I needed. -

...a life going without nicotine... That was one of my fears as well. But that is the addict in you. I am now close to 7 months quit and wanting to smoke does no longer occupy my houghts. Oh yes, it was in the beginning. Say no to that thought and keep yourself busy. You want to quit so smoking is no longer an option. Life going without nicotine is healthier for your body, brain and wallet. Life going without nicotine is freedom as not having to plan for having enough stock nor for the next fix. Life without nicotine is making you feel so much better (no nasty cough, more air and no weezing, no stomach ache, no headache, etc.). Watch those improvements!!!
