January 5, 20251 yr I've been working on a design for a bird feeder that helps to polish sea glass. It's proving much more difficult than I originally anticipated, but I like the challenge.

I can't think of a way a bird feeder would be able to polish sea glass 🤔

I can't think of a way a bird feeder would be able to polish sea glass 🤔 My idea is to put a waterproofed barrel on some kind of axle and connect it to a windmill vane, so the wind will turn the barrel filled with sand, water, and glass. I'd also like some way to brake the windmill system and transfer it to some sort of block-and-tackle system that uses the weight of the birdseed and the motion of the birds to somehow move the barrel. They won't provide a lot of motion, I don't think, but some. Balancing all of those ideas in a package small enough to fit on my apartment balcony is the challenge. I haven't quite got it all worked out yet, but I've got some ideas about the windmill system. It's transferring it to a block-and-tackle I haven't quite gotten yet. I'm not even sure that's the way to describe it.
January 6, 20251 yr Certainly a challenging issue to work out @Penguin but you know what ...? That's exactly the kind of thing to help keep your mind off smoking and/or any urges to do so. It really is a win/win 👏 Best of luck in getting it solved. Keep us updated as things progress please. Edited January 6, 20251 yr by Reciprocity

January 9, 20251 yr Gday Nupe ….. just slipped south of us. Thats us at the entrance to the Brisbane river. Still with no big winds we still got 20mm or 3/4 inch. Today we have had more rain at midday and more tonight. Haven’t read the gauge yet tomorrow morning
January 9, 20251 yr My Nicky in Canberra told me it’s been extremely hot 43 degrees Wow that’s hot … My heart goes out to those effected by these terrible fires in the USA , We are the total opposite - 3 here snowed and frost makes for dangerous footing 🐸
January 9, 20251 yr Gday Just checked out Canberras wheather …. Looks like rain and 24C. Sounds like a cool change from the south has reached them. The winds have dropped in the west coast US thank God. Here. Showers again, chance of a storm again, at least it’s a bit cooler.
January 9, 20251 yr The fires out in CA are terrifying! It's like watching an apocalyptic movie. My friends daughter lives out there and they had to evacuate and she is 8 months pregnant!! 😮 My cousin also lives out there but she told me that they aren't that close to the fires thankfully, but the air is very smoky.
January 21, 20251 yr We're on our fourth day of crappy weather here, so I'm inside working on our family history. Unfortunately, all the online resources are also having issues with the weather, so they're frequently going offline. It's been a bit frustrating, but also productive. I've managed to clean out a lot of the tangles and dead weight on the family tree--people that we thought might've been connected but aren't, duplicates, and so on. So far I've pared away 200 names, and finished the second draft of my dad's and my continuation of my grandfather's family book.
March 30, 20251 yr Wide spread ice storm this weekend just north of where I live. Over 300,000 homes/businesses without power and many roads unpassable due to downed trees. Some pics from one town in Central Ontario:

If the sun comes out after an ice storm the view of the trees is surreal 😯 The issue is that it's mostly the mature trees that end up being destroyed and of course, it take 30-40 years to re-grow new trees to a mature size again so it leaves the local landscape barren of mature trees for that period of time ☹️ Edited March 30, 20251 yr by Reciprocity
