After some time of a quit, what is it like to smoke again?

Featured Replies

I am going on three months since I quit blackening my lungs.

Most of the time I am OK but there are days and moments when I want one.

The two things that keep me from doing it are -

I have no cigarettes and do not feel like buying any.

I know I would just be back to square one.

Sometimes i worry about relapse because some people do. I cannot quite figure out WHY someone would relapse after months or years of not smoking. Oh sure if someone relapses during their first week or two, that is understandable cause the desire to smoke is still pretty strong. I guess we always have SOME level of desire but it weakens.

For those who DO light up after so long, what is it like? I imagine it to be pleasant somehow, like the first hit off the first cig in a brand new pack. But more often than not, people report otherwise like it is gross. So which is it? I am not about to find out, just wondering.

Congratulations ..youv,e nearly done a quarter of a year...massive achievement..

I carnt answer  why some people test the water after some smoke free  years ...I can only speak for myself.....this is a scarey thought....

We are addicts...there is no such thing as ....just one !!!!....no matter how long it' has been since your last one...

At the moment ,the fear is still very fresh in my mind ..of having my two feet amputated.. This alone keeps me from romancing ...

Living with a spouse with end stage emphysema ,is also a great reminder... What smoking does..and more...

So to smoke that first one ..for me would be madness....

I can imagine through...how horrible it would be...that burning in the throat, dizziness..sick...yes very sick...

After fighting for my freedom... Putting the ball and chain back around my ankle is something I carnt imagine doing ...I love my freedom ,and am very proud ...

I imagine you would puke a lot and be sick to your stomach man...

Seems strange,  I think it would be awful, not the smoke, but the disappointment I would feel.

I think what Jules said is probably the overwhelming feeling you would be left with. Crushing disappointment! I have never heard of a person relapsing and happy about it after the fact. Whether there is or isn't some momentary "pleasure" or dizziness in conjunction with that first drag is secondary to the sudden realization of what you have just done. Killed your quit and now have to start all over again :52_fearful: I also think anyone who would do that never really quit smoking. They can abstain for long periods of time but eventually the lure of the cigarette reels them back into active addiction again. They never really understood and believed that this addiction does nothing good for you and only does harm because once you DO get that part of it, it's easy to turn your back on smoking for good.

I am fairly new I am going on my 3rd week quit. And i can say I would think it would be gross. I also still think about smoking, i won't do it but it crosses my mind not as bad as it was before. We just have to keep on keeping on and know that we are doing this for ourselves and loved ones.

Those thoughts of smoking will continue to get weaker and less frequent Latoya as you build on your established quit :)

Asking yourself what it would be like to smoke again is like asking what it would be like to be re-enslaved.

It's not a question that should be entertained.

Just saying.

Took it out of context

OMG JB! What a tormenting thought! Don’t even think about this JB! It’s just not an option.

I have to admit I have never thought about what it would be like to smoke again...my reasons to smoke again were different... and it was not planned. It just happened. Having done it I can assure you it’s a huge disappointment...you literally loathe yourself. On any level it sucks. You disgrace yourself & everyone around you thinks you can’t do it. You eventually realize what you have done & you hate that you gave in. You feel sick with yourself for failing....not sick at the taste unfortunately, at least not after a few weeks. I wish it had made me feel sick. You can’t just have one. Next thing you know you’re up to 6 per day. And worst of all you start back at Square One of Withdrawal. It totally sucks & that “one” is not worth it...not ever. You know how hard it is to get rid of the nicotine in your body...personally I think it takes more than 3 days. All it takes is ONE! Believe me ?

I’m one week clean & counting. Enough self disappointment for me. I don’t want to be a Loser ever again. Yes, smoking thoughts & dreams are normal but do your best to banish those thoughts. They are not reality. They must happen just to test your resolve & wreak havoc in your mind. No prob in sharing them. Hope I answered your question....in my experience...lol!

Congratulations on your Freedom & keep it going. No need to learn the hard way like some of us ? Freedom is a choice even though it takes guts to get there. Freedom rocks...I’ve been there too! On my way to Freedom again. You’re doing great! Be proud! ?

I am not about to go back because for real, it is too expensive, inconvenient, and just seems gross.

Plus I have a different addiction to focus on - Pepsi. Oh I kid you not. I tried to quit THAT one and it didn't happen.

My nicotine receptors demanded I smoke, I told them where to go. They screamed but ran out of breath (funny how that works) and nowadays sometimes politely request a smoke. I give them the evil eye and they shut up.

My Pepsi receptors demanded Pepsi, I told them where to go. suddenly i saw a picture of hell. they said, "Alright but we are taking you with us".

I still drink Pepsi.

I do not smoke.

If there IS a pepsi forum they better not be telling me to give up my habit.

There are sausage forums BUT - not what you are thinking. Some do not even allow women.
