  5. Key facts Tobacco kills up to half of its users. Tobacco kills nearly 6 million people each year. More than five million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600 000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. Unless urgent action is taken, the annual death toll could rise to more than eight million by 2030. Nearly 80% of the world's one billion smokers live in low- and middle-income countries. Consumption of tobacco products is increasing globally, though it is decreasing in some high-income and upper middle-income countries. Leading cause of death, illness and impoverishment The tobacco epidemic is one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced, killing nearly six million people a year. More than five million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600 000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. Approximately one person dies every six seconds due to tobacco, accounting for one in 10 adult deaths. Up to half of current users will eventually die of a tobacco-related disease. Nearly 80% of the more than one billion smokers worldwide live in low- and middle-income countries, where the burden of tobacco-related illness and death is heaviest. Tobacco users who die prematurely deprive their families of income, raise the cost of health care and hinder economic development. In some countries, children from poor households are frequently employed in tobacco farming to provide family income. These children are especially vulnerable to "green tobacco sickness", which is caused by the nicotine that is absorbed through the skin from the handling of wet tobacco leaves. 7. I agree with Markus....go outside go for a run or a brisk walk...get your mind of it. Exercise and if you have one around....go hit the bag it's fun! I bought me punching bag around week 3 and I am having a ball! If I would be younger I would sign up for boxing lessons ...that's a killer training!
  8. I am glad you did :-) You had me thinking about my "lighter emergencies". I either had 10 lighters around or none. I remember I tried to light a cigarette with a toaster....it didn't work...but killed the toaster :-) I went through every drawer in the kitchen trying to find those matches...that I threw out 5 years ago :-) I need to read this often ....I made a total fool out of myself...just because I wanted to smoke! I never want to be this person again
  9. Oh Donna your story made me laugh, I can picture you driving around with a candle in the car......just so that you could smoke...thank you for sharing!

  12. I don't think she is cheating Marti, a lot of smokers think they quit....when they actually didn't. I talked with a lady a while back, she thinks she quit, because she slowed down....and she really believed it! I was furious over it and Daisy (hope the name is correct) replied to my post. She too had a friend who was in total denial and thought she quit, because didn't buy cigarettes anymore - just smoked other people's cigarettes :-)
