Sciatica Pain Relief

Featured Replies

Hey everyone:

For about a week now, I have been suffering with pain in my hip, butt, leg, thigh, and groin area. When I sit, the ache is worse; when I walk, I feel better. Everyone I've talked to thinks I'm dealing with sciatica pain. I recall experiencing this type of pain before where it disappeared after a few days, but now it's back again and the pain is almost unbearable. 100 times worse than last time!

For all of you sufferers out there, what relief techniques do you use? I'm thinking I caused this by packing for my new house and/or the stress of almost being scammed by someone.

Leanna...You need to stretch.  I've been aware of sciatica pain since I was about 16 or so, it is hereditary to be prone to it.  Since I started exercising regularly, it has disappeared, but I also stretch a lot.  My mom is a PT and gave me one exercise that helped me a lot.  Keep in mind though, if you build up your core and back muscles it is very helpful.  It's hard to describe how to do it, check out this link.  Do the stretches daily and it will improve.

Stretching for sure (Google sciatica stretches).  When I've had it, it helped me to apply ice then heat (20 mins each) and take anti-inflammatories.

Thanks Colleen and RunFree! Where exactly did you apply the heat/ice? I am not sure because there are so many achy areas.

Probably one of the worst pains I've ever felt. Yeesh.

Lower back/butt.

I did that tonight and that seemed to really help.

Thank you!

Leanna, I suffered from a lot of back pain when I was your age. It got worse and more frequent until I was almost crippled. Back exercises EVERY DAY for 6 months finally cured me. Web MD has a good video showing the exercises I did. Check here: http://www.webmd.com/back-pain/living-with-low-back-pain-11/five-back-pain-stretches The Mayo Clinic recommends many of the same exercises here http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-living/adult-health/multimedia/back-pain/sls-20076265 . The yoga exercises that Colleen recommended are good, too, but NOT THE COBRA POSE! My doctor said not to bend backwards. He did say that whenever possible, stand against a wall, tilt your hips back and push the small of your back against the wall. Hold for a few seconds and release. Even standing in an elevator, do that 2 or 3 times. You can do that on a floor, too. I found that helped a lot. Also, when your pain is acute,  I found that taking an anti-imflammatory like ibuprofen was much better than any pain killers.

Good luck! Try to remember to do your back exercises several times a week for many years. Hopefully, your back problems will never get as bad as mine were.

This may help too.

Thanks guys! Much appreciated. The pain is back, so I'll keep doing the stretches.

Oh something else Leanna...do you sit at a desk a lot?  Sometimes that can cause it to flare up.  I know it hurts terrible, but getting up and walking it out will help while it is hurting.

I do sit at my desk a lot Colleen! I find walking helps a lot. I guess it hurts so much because I am sitting on my sciatic nerve.

Leanna, I'm pretty sure that the exercises (and, of course, completing your move) will take care of your back pain. But if it persists, you might consider a "kneeling chair". They're supposed to encourage you to sit up straight when working at a desk. There are tons available (check Amazon, for example) and they look like this:

Damn IPad ... Had a reply typed up and my fat fingers must have hit something, and I lost it all...so...here is the shortened version...lol

Just had back surgery for the same pain.

I've had issues on and off for years. This last "episode" started in July.. In the past I have gone the PT/stretching route with good success.. This time the pain was increasingly more intense. An MRI reveled stenosis..narrowing of the spine... Genetics played a big part in my problem.. My spine is narrower than normal, and over the years of physical work, I have damaged a couple discs..which means I don't have any room for all the nerves and they are rubbing. I underwent a series of epidurals with no relief. They were to reduce the swelling to provide some space..but swelling really wasn't my problem...so my only alternative was surgery.

Dec.30th I had a "laminectomy" (it's easier to google than for me to describe)... I am dealing with some "surgery pain" yet(3weeks after) but 99.9% of all the nerve pain is gone...I still have a little "tingle" down my left leg...but was told ,depending on the severity of the damage before the surgery, it could take up to a full year for the nerve to completely heal. I just started water PT last week and next week will move to "land"PT... The Dr. had to cut through 3 layers of muscle in my back to get to the spine...that's where most of the pain is now...it's VERY manageable .

Of course surgery isn't anything someone should jump into.. My Dr. said I really didn't have any other option, and I am glad I had it done. Of course I have to be careful in the future so this doesn't happen again...he said that's my only restriction...don't be stupid...lol

Now..after all that...take the advice from the others and start stretching and PT if your Dr. thinks you will benefit from it..it did help me for many years, but I think it was the genetic factor that caused it to stop giving relief...

If you have pain sitting, I would guess that your "problem" is at a different level of your spine than mine ...mine was L4&L5..I only got relief by sitting... I would suggest a trip to the Dr. so he can determine what's injured/damaged and tell you what exercises would help the most.

A laminectomy is a surgery where they remove a part of the spine that compresses the nerve called the lamina......

in some people the lamina can cause the nerves to be compressed thus leading to back pain and numbness and tingling.

Yep..that's what they did..cut 2 of them off and then cleaned up the bones around it and also shaved off the protruding discs...

Does sciatica cause groin pain?

Thanks for all the information everyone!

Yes. Irritation of the sciatic nerve can cause groin pain.
