January 11, 20197 yr Getting ready to plant a couple acres of Barley, basicall a food plot for the animals. Any Farmer Jans or Johns quiting smoking. ?
January 11, 20197 yr @sgt.barney knows some things but, mostly fruit and veg, I think. I do not know much of anything except, Barley Water is delicious/nutritious etc for us, human animals too. and Common and Hairy Vetch (NOT the invasive Crown Vetch) is good fodder and really beneficial to the land. I am a gardener not a farmer but, interested in all of it.
January 11, 20197 yr Sarge runs a Market Garden / CSA ... but does very little in the way of grains - about 100 lb each of Hard Red Winter and Soft White Spring Wheat. Never grew Barley Absolutely nothin' in the way of animal feed / fodder ... unless you count the Sweet Corn plots that feed what must be 3,000 Bandit 'Coons every summer. But to answer the question you might consider The Sarge to be a very small-scale (under 2 acres) Mr. Green Jeans. EZPZ Edited January 11, 20197 yr by sgt.barney

January 12, 20197 yr G,day Its been 40 odd years since I’ve had much to do with farming. Grew up on the rich black soil plains in northern NSW. Broad acre farming if the rains treated you alright. My uncle always grew a few hundred acres of barley as well as the thousands of wheat. If the season was good and the wheat gave you a profit the barley would be of a high protein level perfect for stock feed, but a lower price than wheat. If the season was bad the wheat yield down, the barley was stunted and the protein level down. That was the saviour as that ment it was perfect as malting barley and attracted a premium price to be shipped off, malted and turned into beer! And I don’t think farming has changed..... most of NSW is in deep drought as we speak. No big wheat crop and little feed for stock. There’s still a bit of bushy in me and Im praying like most for rain. A cyclone up nth becomes a deep low that heads west and soaks Qld and NSW. Might mean s flood but that’s how it goes. Either drought or flooding rains..... C
