January 4, 20188 yr Anyone else on the board with schizophrenia or schizoaffective who is trying to wuit? I chose this time to quit mainly because I have been doing good lately. But I am wondering hoe I'm going to cope without smokes if I am having an episode. ? Yes I am in therapy for it but my therapist isnt much help.
January 4, 20188 yr Welcome to Quit Train Christine Sorry, can't help you with your question and hope someone else might be able to give you some insight. I'm a little surprised your therapist can't give you some direction on this as smoking and therefore quitting is a pretty common thing,
January 4, 20188 yr Wow There must be someone in the medical community that has knowledge/experience in this area. Are you associated with any other groups or associations that you could reach out to for referrals or information? Wish I could offer more helpful info.
January 4, 20188 yr If your therapist isn’t helping and suggests knitting (which in some ways isn’t a bad idea- keeps your hands busy) maybe you would want to think about asking for a referral to/finding a therapist who is knowledgeable and experienced in working with clients with your diagnosis. Just a thought.
January 4, 20188 yr CHRISTINE, you will need to find something enjoyable to replace smoking. Something YOU enjoy, something that gives you pleasure and something that reduces anxiety. Your brain thinks that nicotine is relaxing but in fact it’s endorphins that are giving you that “feel better” feeling. I am not schizophrenic but I do have some limited knowledge on the disorder. The fact you are doing well is fantastic & you want to guard that feeling of wellness. Your Therapist may recommend Yoga exercises...it’s too bad she is not actively participating in your good decision to quit smoking. But you know yourself better than anyone else so be proactive and replace the smoking with healthier choices. I have been learning to do this too for anxiety. I wish you the very best in your Quit. This site is truly supportive with awesome people who can help you achieve your goal. ?
January 4, 20188 yr As I was a big knitter in the past..it a great way to pass the time calm you down...and very rewarding...just sayin !!!!.I'm sorry I carnt help in other ways !!!!
January 24, 20188 yr Hi Christine, I am schizoaffective, and have recently quit smoking. When I feel an episode coming on and my anxiety is ramping up, I find somebody, anyone to talk to. Sometimes its as minor as playing chicks and sticks till it passes. If its really bad I call my therapist or a family member or close friend. I have a list of things that I think are fun to distract myself when my mood turns foul or worse.
