November 26, 201510 yr Hey Cookie. I am so sorry to hear about your Mum. Sending gentle hugs your way. It's great you want to honour her, I really admire that and quitting for you and your kiddos too is a good thing. I'm hoping you're still with us but wanted to give one piece of advice. Don't over think it. Just stay in the moment and don't let your mind drift too far forwards. No matter what happened yesterday, today you don't smoke...find some stuff to do instead. Say NOPE in your head, cough sweets, clean...whatever it takes to distract yourself. Sending strength to you. xx
November 26, 201510 yr Author Hi guys, sorry been quiet but so much funeral planning to do. All your tips & advice have been amazing. Day 5 with no smoking now. I haven't had any alcohol yet though which I know will be the real test. The Allen Carr book is fantastic!! Xx
November 26, 201510 yr Oh Cookie, that's fantastic news. So so pleased for you. I haven't read Allen Carr but I've quit using similar methods of education and it's amazing what a change of attitude can do for your quit. Wishing you support and a smooth quit. :-)
November 27, 201510 yr Hi Cookie. My mother has been living with stage 4 lung cancer for about two years now. I quit shortly after we found out. I had been smoking since I was in my teens, more than 30 years. It was terrible in the beginning because I was going with her to the drs and chemo and smoking outside the cancer area. I am quit for more than two years now and I can tell you that the suffering in the beginning is worth it. You will get to a point where you don't want to smoke any more at all. I wish you all the best with your quit and I am very sorry about your loss. If you can, may I suggest to go lightly on the drinking in the beginning? I waited for a few months before I went out and on the first time I did not drink a lot. I was very careful not to get too drunk during the first year so that I always had some control. Now I am fine with it but this was a challenge for me personally.
November 27, 201510 yr Author Thank you beacon. I'm so sorry about your mum ..but 2 years no smoking...that's fantastic!!! You are right about the drinking!! At least socially. I have cancelled most social events until the new year. Drinking at home is ok as much less temptation...although it is still there.....
December 1, 201510 yr Sorry about your Mom and I hope everything is going okay, all things considered. The "real test" you've already taken and passed, if there is such a thing. It's imperative that you keep your quit separate from all of the other things going on in your life; put it in it's own little space and guard it. There will always be tests along the way, not in the sense that they will cause a craving, but more so along the lines of learning to handle all situations without smoking, good and bad. Everything that we go through, so do non-smokers. Your quit is new, you're going through a very stressful and emotional time and give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. Hope you can provide an update soon.
