I got an interview next Friday. we had to submit answers in an essay last week. three chief board I believe. then onto council after that......good news is I killed the writing, bad news is I am 8 years behind the one guy, but 6 in front of the third and maybe 12 of fourth sgt. Other good side is top chief leaves in 12-18 months so like a practice if not this time. just a dog and pony show I trulely believe to validate the one pick, which I don't think anyone would doubt his qualifications anyways. like I said, practice...

How did it go Bakon?

I have another interview tomorrow and just the other day I received an email from the client I was working for.  Inquiring if I were working, he may have an open permanent position mid-Feb and that I would have to interview with the owner.

That is great news, Colleen!

Guess Bakon won't tell us how his went. Too busy with the new machine.......

mine was fine,  three chief board I had to explain a paper I wrote a few weeks back. my position on improvements, leadership (they called it management philosophy because it the new cool term) and job description. silly part is why am I telling you what the job should be and how to do it and how to fix a few things. shouldn't they be saying what they want done? and how do you tell them what is wrong with the place they been in charge of for last 40 years. not kidding, old chief part of it, he started in 1950's working, was chief in 1970s till 10 years ago when current two took over.

been in a leadership/command position since I was 21 and sgt in army.  they don't know difference between manager and leader anyways, no military time for most in LE anymore. no team building or individual development, just do what I say style for them.

wait a year or so for all old style to be gone, I can wait but want to not pass on this time and be overlooked for next because of it.

council interviews next, no time set yet but current deputy chief is leaving in a week.

How did it go Bakon?

good luck colleen ....fingers crossed xx

Bakon, you make a great point. If you are interviewing with people who have been top management for many years and they ask you "What would you do to improve the company?" how are you supposed to answer that question? There is no good answer. It's like how do you answer the question, "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?" I guess my feeling is that all you can do is be honest about who you are. If they like that (innovative new ideas or not) great. If they don't like it, then it's not the right place for you, anyway. Good luck and keep us posted!
