Does anyone do kindle unlimited or have tried it? What do/did you think? Is it worth it? I'm tempted by the idea as I could read to my hearts content, plus I think it would allow me to try authors/books I wouldn't necessarily buy, and I like that I can cancel anytime. But I don't like you are essentially renting the book and when you cancel your subscription, you lose access to anything you've downloaded. Feels like I may be wasting money. I don't like doing that.

That is what stops me from subscribing to it.... Then again it's kind of like Netflix for books. I was going to do this but they stopped carrying the Walking dead comics for kindle, too. Grr.

That's kinda how I'm trying to look at it - I rent movies in the form of sky's now tv service and buy dvds of anything we particularly like, and as a result I've watched a lot of stuff I wouldn't have otherwise. Somehow it feels wrong with books though ...

I use my kindle to download the free books and then if I like an author I order the series or whatever at the library...so I guess it's not much different to that? Although the library is pretty cheap so maybe down to costs?

I tried Kindle Unlimited and didn't like it. It seemed to be mostly a venue for authors to self-publish. They had no books by any of my favorite authors. I have nothing against new authors, but I can get plenty of them for free online from my local public library. And despite their promises to the contrary, Kindle Unlimited had almost no audiobooks, which I listen to a lot.

 

So I tried it for a few weeks and canceled. I do have Amazon Prime for the free shipping (which we use a LOT). We use their streaming video service because it comes free with the Prime membership. However, their streaming video service sucks and we try to avoid it (Netflix is much better). So there's my opinion.

I am more of an audible fan too ever since my PRK surgery.  You can't get many free audibles but a lot are discounted.  "Wuthering Heights" was .99 and the narrator was amazing.  "The Age of Innocence" was .99 and I haven't listened to it yet.  That is one of my all time fave books and movies.

 

I love kindle unlimited.  I wouldn't give it up for the world.  My only complaint: can't have more than 10 books at a time.   But I do see what you are saying Chrysalis, a lot are indie authors .  For me, I don't mind that though, as I learn more toward the UF genre and there is so much to choose from.  (The suburb I am in I do not have access to the public library or their kindle options.)
