    Back in the day, even the goalies didn't wear face masks - Lol. That was insanity!! Can you imagine .... frozen rubber coming at you every game? No wonder those goalies were all scarred up and no teeth!! Jacques Plante with the Montreal Canadiens was the first to have a piece of fiberglass formed into a face mask in 1959 I believe.

    Goalies like Terry Sawchuk with Detroit didn't go to the mask until later. I guess they didn't care how many stitches they got in their face?
