Pulling an all-nighter

Featured Replies

Hey everyone:

I have a sleep study appointment tomorrow at 10 p.m. A few months ago, I found out I have sleep apnea. Mine is serious enough that I need a mask (I call it the Darth Vader mask). Basically, I stop breathing in my sleep, or my breathing gets very shallow and I freak out. This happened a bunch of times the last time I had a sleep study. Most of them were "partial" apneas, which means I didn't stop breathing completely, but still freaking scary!

The sleep study tomorrow starts at 10 and takes about an hour for them to hook up all the wires to me. Then lights out at 11:30. For anyone who knows me, you know I can't sleep at 11:30. I'm a nighthawk. I stay up until 3-4 in the morning, sometimes later. So to shock my body, I pulled an all-nighter last night (made it until 6 a.m. before collapsing) and will be doing the same tonight. However, I won't be going to bed at all tonight or tomorrow during the day. That way, I'll be so exhausted by the time I reach the sleep study, all I will want to do is sleep.

If anyone in the UK is up at 9 or 10 a.m. tomorrow, you should join me on chat! I really have no idea what I'm going to do all night now that I'm done school. If I don't have any distractions, I will definitely fall asleep, lol.

A guy at my work has sleep apnea badly enough to need the mask/machine at night (every night), so I know a little about it from what he's told me... I'm sorry to hear that you have it too :(

I will be at work at that time, so I might not be able to go in 'chat', but as long as my boss doesn't collar me first thing, I can post or chat in a PM or something?

I am going to sleep now, so instead of wishing you you sweet dreams, I will wish you to stay awake, lol. You are going to be a zombie tomorrow!

My hubster has sleep apnea and also wears the c-map mask.

Honestly, when he got that mask, all I felt was RELIEF! No more snoring :)  Before that he was always sleep deprived, so I'm glad he was diagnosed.

And so is he!

Good luck with yours Leanna.

My dad has sleep apnea really badly and has for years, so I've been around it. Steve sits up some nights and listens to me breathe because he's had the unfortunate pleasure of hearing/seeing me freak out in my sleep. It's scary... I'm always terrified to go to sleep; I don't take sleeping pills because I'm afraid I won't wake up again. This is part of the reason I struggle to fall asleep most nights. Even when I do sleep, it's restless. The doctor told me it took me two hours to fall asleep... that was with all the lights turned off and no distractions. They need at least 6 hours of recorded sleep time. That's why I'm staying up.

Sandy, I am happy to finally get fitted for a mask, but I'm also so nervous about my appointment. I'm claustrophobic and I hear the CPAP can make you feel very claustrophobic at first. I just keep telling myself I'm being monitored 24/7 and if there are any issues, the sleep centre people will rush to me. I'm looking forward to getting a decent night's sleep for once!

Try not to worry Leanne, I'm sure they will take good care of you.

My hubby was monitored the entire time for his study, so I'm sure that is typical protocol.

You can always rip that mask off anytime you feel uncomfortable :)

I see you are still awake Leanna - I will be at work in about an hour... So long as someone doesn't grab me and want to talk about something, I will be here :)

My roommate just walked by to go out onto the balcony and he looked at me and said I look "too awake." Lol, even though I keep yawning!

hey sweetie, gosh that sounds like a bit of a worry. No wonder you don't like sleeping very much. Sounds like this mask could be the making of you. x

Making coffee... Need coffee, lol

I'm really hoping so Marti! The mask is about $1500... at least it will decrease my chances of dying in my sleep. That's something, right? Lol.

I was just thinking the same thing.

I'm thinking about doing some exercises in a few hours.

I keep trying to convince myself to go to the gym, but meh.

Steve will be awake in two hours. I decided not to blind him with my laptop screen, so I'm sitting in my dining room with all the lights on.

So is it early morning there now and you need to get all the way to night time?

Is there any help from the government?  Or you have to pay out yourself?

It's 4:06 a.m. here and I am planning on staying up until 10 p.m. tonight. I have a long day ahead of me.

She's supposed to discuss that with us at my next follow-up appointment. She said there may be some government help, but I'm not sure.

It's sad that the machine just isn't covered by our health insurance. Do they not think not breathing in your sleep isn't a health risk? My friend's dad died because of sleep apnea.

Yeah, because breathing, and staying alive are not linked at all... geez.  I hope that turns out OK for you, what with your dentist fees too... I think you're gonna need that $380 back from your flatmate, lol

It sucks. We have so many things we need to pay for right now. My roommates just think that Steve makes the motherload in regards to money and that he'll always be able to help me out financially. He can only do so much when he's supporting the both of us right now. I keep telling him I can find a job, but he really wants me to focus on school.

My student loans gave me a total of $1800. After tuition and paying my bills, I have $176 left. My textbooks are going to cost about $800. Insanity. School is so damn expensive. I'm going to apply for every grant/bursary offered (free money you don't have to pay back) and hope I get a few.

Haven't you finished school now?

Your roommates... it should make zero difference to them how much he makes... it's none of their concern!  Some people, lol

Nope. I'll be finished in December.

I'm on a two-week break until the 9th.

Lol, I know. It pisses me off.

He works hard for his money. He's on call and a lot of times, he has to work all week + the weekend.

Oh, haha. He bought me something apparently and the postman left the slip in our mailbox. I asked him what he bought and he wouldn't tell me. Says it's a surprise.

So I checked our credit card statement today and found out what store he bought it from.

Lol, I still have no idea what it is, but he called me a "nosy Nancy" and told me to stop snooping.

I'm horrible with surprises and he isn't going to pick up the parcel until I leave. I'm leaving for five days starting Friday to visit my best friend, little brother, and dad. He says he can't trust me to not peak while he's at work, lol.

Such faith!
