Smoking and the Gut

I was talking to a guy I've done business with for several years now.  He's been a smoker for over thirty years.  One of those guys who would say "yeah, I should quit but..."

He's been off the smokes completely for a couple of weeks now.  For the last two/three months, smoking a cigarette would cause him to feel nauseous.  He said practically every cigarette left him feeling like he either needed to vomit or sometimes he would feel the urgent need to use the bathroom but nothing came out.  When he abstained from smoking, his stomach felt fine.  Then, he would light another one up and get all kinds of uneasiness in his gut again.  If he smoked before he ate, he had no appetite and would feel sick while eating.  Now that he's quit, his appetite is back where it should be.

Did anybody else have gut issues while smoking?

No I didn't but have read similar stories in the past few days of people who were affected in that same manner by smoking - it started to make them feel nauseous and that's why they wanted to try quitting. Odd that I've never noticed hearing about that before now but I suppose it makes sense. Smoking has so many other negative effects.

If gut issues related to smoking are becoming more prevalent, that leads me to one question: What are the tobacco companies putting in cigarettes now?

A cigarette is already a cocktail of chemicals that will screw up your system six-ways-to-Sunday.  Have they found a way to make them even worse?

@Boo, he could have been having heart issues that escalate when he smokes. Both my mom and a friends dad both had feelings of having to have a bowel movement and nothing would come out.

My mom was a smoker and my friends dad has been quit for probably a good 60 years. (He's in his 90's)

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
