Talking things through

Hey to all our fabulous quitters. I have been moving house today and I moved back into a block of units I lived in 7 years ago. When I lived there I had a raging smoking habit.

While my move today went quite well I have been aware at times of a little smoking devil reminding me that I usually smoke in this place. I have been able to resist it without a lot of trouble but I have had to be patient with myself through this. I also think it’s important to talk it through with my fellow quitters.

The other challenges seem to be that everything is unsettled from moving and also my allergies are triggered since the previous occupant used a lot of chemicals which always make me feel sick.

Just about here I would apologise for whining but I’ve learnt my quit is important enough to whine and talk about things that are challenging me.

i remember how agro I was when I first quit and without venting I would never have gotten through it.

Hey Gives,

Nice rant. I listened. I’m happy for you that your move went well. I can see how the place might trigger memories of your smoking life so keep aware of your quit and hold on tight to it. I’m so very proud of you. Thanks for sharing.

Woohoo...move finished.... I hate moving it does my head in... and movie itself would be a stressful event full of triggers so how awesome are you?

I so get the new (return to old) venue raising some triggers so having a whinge about it and getting it out with a little rant is a smart technique, having it out there takes away a fair wack of the triggers power because now not only is it an annoying voice in your head that you have to face on your own you've put it out there and have the whole train behind you if you need.

Its a poxy time in the quit because most of the time we are pretty solid, and sure of ourselves but we still get these triggers time to time and they make us wobble and doubt our resolve but we are bigger and stronger than any stupid trigger now. We are in control. We have this... just like you did today.  So if that nicob1tch gets in your head again telling you something stupid you come in here and whinge, and whine, and rail cos that works and you keep your quit.

KTQ, Givvy cos you have come so far and deserve to be smoke free forever.

Smart stuff GITW, doesn't matter if you are 10 minutes quit or 10 years, better to get those niggling thoughts out there and take away their power. You never need to apologize for that.

I hope you are very happy in your new place.

Hey GITW,

Your experience helps others, there is no doubt about that and I am really appreciative reading your posts.

It reminds me to stay the course and also brightens my day by seeing people consciously pay attention to their quit and themselves.

You have a great quit.  Nurture and protect it.

Will rinsing surfaces with baking soda or white vinegar mitigate the chemicals ?

Humans should never let Dow chemical into their houses, breathing that stuff is damaging.

Thanks Sazerac. That’s a good idea with the baking soda. I will try it. I was so busy moving things today that there was no time to try cleaning.

Glad to hear that your move has gone well GITW. I can understand how some old smoking associations would be triggered there, but fortunately you are keeping them under control. Hope you enjoy your new place.

Hope all went well with your specialist appointment... don't forget we are here either in the threads or om if you need to talk it out, not bottling up of things (cos thats so not the the pot calling the kettle there is it).. as you have said, its better to talk it out, takes away the power.

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
