  6. Welcome aboard and stick close. Keep busy and realize there will be stressful times but believe in yourself that you can handle this. No special gifts here for those of us that have made it. Just tired of the addiction and realize it for what it is. I smoked for a long time also and after the first few weeks was surprised that it was not as difficult as I imagined. Believe in yourself that you can handle this because you can if you really want it. Stay close and reach out if need be. Best wishes.

  7. Stick close in the beginning days @overcome, we got your back This addiction is crazy but you're well prepared for it. Drink lots of water or juice to help flush it out. The nicotine takes about three days to leave your body

  15. NOPE thread, posting and reading here. Eating yummy healthy foods, savoring every bite. Lots of water, not skimping on rest. Exercise. Knowing that there is so much love, non judgement, and support here on the Quit Train, makes all the difference.

  17. These are all the tools I have been using to distract me so far - making tea, reading reading and more reading, I've rewatched Parks and Recreation as it's such a comforting thing, plus it's good to laugh hysterically and feel my lungs opening up! If I feel a craving hit I breathe in for a count of six, hold it and breathe out slowly. If that doesn't help and I'm at home I head for the shower and try to reset myself. At work I get up and walk around and shake myself off. I've also had several good cries, I doubt that's over yet.

  18. Woohoo, six years quit today!!! I couldn't have done it without all the support I received, especially my first year quit. I've been fortunate to be able to be here to pay it forward and have made great friendships with people all over the world and for that I feel so grateful

  19. Thank you to everyone for all the information on this site, I have been reading/learning since early this am. Preparing to quit Monday the 4th, taken the week off work to work through what I see as the toughest part (withdrawal's). I have quit various times in the past but never made it for more than a couple years, so am still hooked after 35years. My Son gave me some words of encouragement when talking about quitting with him last week, he text me "yep, think of all the stuff you've overcome ... quitting smoking wont seem as bad after" so that is my user name (overcome). Ordered Allen Carr's book so will read that tomorrow. Again thanks to all for the info and support.

  20. Nixter Quit Date: 6/7/15 Posted June 27, 2015 So basically what I'm figuring out is that cigarettes and nicotine are big fat liars. For all those years they kept me at their beck and call by making me afraid. I was afraid to quit because I thought I wouldn't be able to have fun without a cig. LIE. I was afraid to quit because I thought it would be too hard. LIE. I was afraid to quit because I thought every day would be like day 1. LIE. I was afraid to quit because I wouldn't be "me" without my smokes. LIE!! I am telling you, I feel more joy at social situations than I ever have!! Why? Because I can concentrate on having fun instead of worrying when I can sneak outside for a cigarette. I physically feel soooo much better already. And I'm also really proud of myself. But I have to be honest and say I'm a little pissed that I was duped for so long. Anyway, I'm so happy to be a non smoker. Thanks for being here for me! 21. Day 4 done. Half way there ... ONLY half way??? You know how many food places there are on streets and my over sensitive nose is smelling all the aromas from those places. Would love to have a big fat juicy burger and a shawarma ... followed by an ice cream. Maybe washed down with a cold beer. Have had thoughts of cheating ... 4 days is good, it's ok to eat a bit now. After that I can do another 4 days and still meet my goal of 8 days. Taking electrolytes so no cramps so far. Slight headache today - not too bad just a dull ache.

  23. Apart from reading this board, another thing that really helped me get through the first few weeks was to stay busy. Lots of physical activity. Tasks to keep my hands occupied. Mindless stuff listed out in advance (because the brainfog really clobbered me). Just constant motion. Not only did that help me power through the cravings, it helped me manage the cauldron of feelings that surfaced, as well. (“Dunno what to do with that emotion… oh well I guess I’ll just wash the car windows.”) Glad you have nicotine lozenges in your quit kit. I found the fruit minis to be very helpful in a pinch. I, too, lost a multi-year quit once. Thought I could be a casual/occasional smoker. But that was a delusion… within a month of my “just for tonight” choice I was back to more than a pack a day, with nicotine controlling me. It took me decades to quit again. This QuitTrain group is a big part of my quitting commitment this time… it’s helpful to have such a wonderful group of supportive people and accountability buddies who understand what quitting is like. Good luck with your count-down today!

  28. I figured I'd add what's worked for me so far, on day 5 nicotine free. I repeatedly tell myself I'm a non smoker, over and over throughout the day, remind myself how each inhale of smoke really feels because it is not pleasant. Lots of water and diet root beer (before today was diet Pepsi, trying to reduce caffeine). String cheese!!! Coloring pages, adult level, to keep my hands busy. Cinnamon toothpicks!! They are my favorite in the car, roll down the windows and chew. Daily commitment to NOPE. The people on this train are amazing!! Thank you all!!

  30. Two days is absolutely amazing! I hadn't gone even one full day without smoking for almost 2 decades before I quit, so I know well how every hour and day smoke free feels like (and is) a major accomplishment early on. And good for you for not using stress as a reason to cave. You're an all-star, HeatherD!

  32. This is thread was perfect for me today. I have 2 days !! It has been years since I have gone even a day without smoking - so I am celebrating. I had some very stressful news yesterday and believe me I thought "oh no.- not now " And then realized If I want this quit TRULY - no amount of stress is going to make me light up. Hard to accept that but necessary. And here I am dealing with it - SMOKE FREE and let's face it, I am not trying to get out of work to have a smoke or avoid it - I am taking it head on and smoke free. This is NOT EASY in anyway - but it is possible.

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
