  2. Way to go Kate! If there is a next time, you will be stronger for this. Sort of blessings in disguise.

  3. Ice cream was also my 'go to' when I had cigarette cravings during a Covid lockdown! Even in the middle of winter it seems to help sometimes. Blood orange with dark chocolate or Queensland mango with coconut and white chocolate! Yum! Sorry you've had such a bad time Kate18, I suffer from depression too and it can come over you at any time. Going for a walk definitely helps as it gets the endorphines moving and also calms the cigarette cravings. So glad that you stayed strong, it would be heart breaking to lose a twelve month quit. All the best.

  10. Well done @Kate18 in fighting it off, great spirit and determination. Perhaps this thread will inspire others to post their own SOS and save their quit. Good to know, next time we will recommend it early, or perhaps save it on a post-it on your fridge. I feel like eating an entire ice cream too .

  14. Oh Kate, don't give in. You are so worth not smoking that cigarette. When we are down, we go into self destruction mode and not feeling that we are worthy of anything. Listen to uplifting music, watch a funny movie or read a good book. Call your children if it helps. You have accomplished so much this past year. What a feat it is to quit smoking. I do not know where you are reading that alcohol is a mood booster. The short high you get from both brings you down so quick. Hang in there and reach out if you need. You can get through this.

  15. You did it @Kate18 Hard but doable right . What are you fav flowers I'm wondering . Will it be a single a sunflower or a bouquet , , a potted tropical plant or something else . Will they be yellow , or pink , or multi coloured or your favourite color. ( anything is possible these days ) Maybe you will find a simple wilted dried up plant no one wanted at the greenhouse or farmers market and you can bring it back to life with nurturing just as we can do on rough days of our quits . If you have chosen a bouquet , will it have babies breath to remind you that this crave you beat is like that of babies breath breathing in oxygen not stolen by a smoke. Will you put that beautiful candle beside it or something else . Candles smell way better than smoke . Will you tell your kids the story of how tough quitting smoking is and how hard depression can be too but you made it through . Thank you for posting , for being real . I appreciate that , and you helped me and I'm sure others . Quitting is a journey full of surprises isn't it , but not one thing can take our quit away unless we give it a way . Be proud of you Kate and if today is still rough reread all of the wonderful comments ideas and suggestions . There is tons love and support . Take what might help . ALL want to help . Maybe something has sparked a creative idea of your own to lift your spirits . I would love to hear how you take care of yourself . Many people suffer from depression , I myself at times do as well although mine is caused by a medication side effect that I have no control over along with stress and circumstances . The medication is my life line until something new or a cure comes along . One day at a time is all any of us can take or have . . The good news for me is I believe there are trials now ... believe it or not because of covid . You own your quit . I own mine and others own theirs but TOGETHER we get through .

  27. Kate, I can't believe there is not an alternative medicine that would help. I think it would only add to your depression to go back to smoking. If this doctor can't help, I would look for another. Join a support group, check with the National Association on Mental Illness (NAMI). When you join a group, it is an instant connection to others who might be able to share information. Don't ever give up and don't give into the temptations of this addiction.

  28. Kris the NRTs all made me sick to my stomach, I ended up using Sugar free Hard candies such as the weatherman butterscotch and the RI cola lemon trough lozenges.. My weight has been up and down since I started quitting years ago. I really wasn't heart broken when the NRTs didn't work for me, I wanted to be free not simply chained with a less smelly chain.

  31. Hi Kate! I feel for you and your struggles. I was able to supplement with Vitamin D3 to help with mild depressive symptoms during the dark months. I also find that regular cardio exercise gives me a little dopamine boost and calms my anxiety at the same time. My cardio is slow jogging, brisk walking, cycling or living room dancing. I find that the longer I stay off nicotine, the better I feel emotionally. One and a half years now. I am now convinced that nicotine was a source of depression and anxiety for me. But before I got better, I went through some mildly depressive months -- 4 I think. Please consult your doctor and try not to relapse into using nicotine. If you can stay off it long enough, your natural dopamine production will probably wake up. All the best to you. I'm rooting for ya. You CAN make it!!!

  33. I am just on my way out so didn't get a chance to read through the comments and just quickly browsed at your post so I hope I'm not outta line , but want to say this ... You don't need cigarettes do you . You want them thinking it's what's you need but that's addictions lie and it's using your depression to reel you right back in . Take a breath . We are here for you . You just want some relief a break from the depression . I get that , depression , anxiety all those things can wear a person down . It hurts . It's not your fault and there are things you can do . Put the call in to your dr . At least having a plan is something to give you hope . Calling your family is a good idea too. . You don't have to tell them your depressed but if you do what's wrong with that . Nothing . It's been a hard year for everyone . Or ... A wise young man once told me to go stick my head in a bucket of ice cold water ..so I did it . It will make you come to your senses lol . Go , do it . Losing a years quit for one cig will lead to more as you know . No one stops at one and you won't be different . The consequences of that one cigarette are far greater than sticking out this rough spell . Trust me . From one whom regrets a puff . Do something different . As you know both cigs and booze cause a crash . Neither are the solution . One isnt enough Don't fall for the lie . Drink water not booze ok . Walk if you can . I'm off to walk too here in 31 degrees and then stopping at two neighbors to water their flowers .. come along for the walk . Nurture your quit.. go buy yourself flowers not cigarettes . Sorry if this post is choppy I gotta run .. no smokin ya hear ... we got ya . Hugs

  34. Thank you, my friends. I took the advice of many of you. I put in calls to my kids, but I know my son is at Gettysburg with his family on an historical tour, and my daughter is working on materials for the youth group she runs. I walked the dog for a while, then went to the store for a Hagan Das coconut pineapple ice cream and ate the entire thing. I looked further at medications that might help and their side effects. My doctor isn't available until June 10th, unfortunately. She has someone to cover, but I don't want to meet with someone I don't know and explain the history of why I can't have the obvious medications he'd be suggesting. Cheese always makes me feel cheery; apparently it acts on the opioid receptors. I got corn chips at the store, too, so maybe I'll make nachos. I didn't do the garden hose, water puddle and jumping up and down in it because I have no garden hose nor yard to make a puddle in, but it was an amusing idea. I did take a couple of hour nap after the ice cream and feel better. The danger of going out and buying cigarettes, and relapsing, is past. Thank you for being here to act as a sounding board and provide some suggestions that I was temporarily forgetting while I was in a cloud of blue mood. Thanks everyone.

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
