  8. I know “they” say flying is safe now, but I have never liked flying, on a good day, and have really been fretting about flying cross country, in just a few weeks. So, my boyfriend suggested we take a month to 6 weeks and drive, instead of fly, and stop in and see everyone we miss, and visit places we have never seen, along the way. I love road trips, and since we just did a three week one in March, and had a great time, I jumped at his offer. We are even taking Barney with us. I hate giving in to my fears, but I am looking at it, in a more positive light. It will be a trip of a lifetime. We have a brand new SUV, so a perfect vehicle for such a long trip.

  9. Linda ...I'm truly sorry your having to go through losing your dear friend ...a few years ago I was exactly in your shoes ...my friend and I had been by each others side for over 60 years .... I watched her take that last pull on a cigerette hours before she died ... It was the most pitiful sight ,and I still have that vision .... I promised my family ,I will never put them through that ... Watching her... made my quit stronger .... I know Linda your friend would be very upset if you gave away your precious quit ... I bet she is very proud of you ...keeping your Quit is to honour your friend ...like mine was ....

  10. NOPE If ever I miss the pledge, it is just that smoking doesn't cross my mind. And that is a good thing. Nonetheless, my heart is with every person who is pledging to never take another puff.

  12. I was grateful someone mentioned to read the Tobacco wars documentary . Yes , I had seen it before . I've also done much research especially in the last fiive six years and it's given me a passion to help others quit and an even bigger passion to to expose the truth about big T . Instead of smoking start researching . Here is one I read this morning https://www.lung.org/research/sotc/by-the-numbers/10-appalling-tobacco-facts Instead of smoking research politics and smoking . Really dig deep into it . I want you to do the research , it will distract you from smoking , I can give you link upon link and boy I'd like to but I want you to be drawn to what interests you and what you'd like to learn about big T and vaping . Your curiosity will reveal to you some very important things to help you quit and maybe even take it further to another level . I'm a bit of an investigator and once I start I want answers . I think we should share our findings and start a thread devoted to unveiling the lies . Politics and religion are two things on quit smoking sites frowned upon . Do you suppose Big T likes that . I do and know they do . What a bunch of .... ok I'll keep my cool lol . l think they are the sneakiest most threatening people we need worry about big time in this day and age and in this world . Only research will open your eyes . Research where the money you spend on cigarettes is donated to or who are they supporting ? Politicians ? Why politicians ? Research it . What other things do they own ? Do your research it's very very very important! Don't smoke and be a part of their lies . Do they own other big food corporations , big liquor names ? Perhaps coffee ? There are some things I just won't buy now because of the ties . How did they lure us into smoking , how are they luring kids in today ? For every smoker quitting how many are starting with their safer way of smoking their products and how many in the future will die a younger age . The information out there will astound you . Bring up Old and new court documents , research the history , don't smoke. Be a part by Speaking up with the truth , not just quitting smoking but really speaking out . Unveil the lies ! I am curious what have others read during their quits that did or did not surprise them about big T .

  14. WOW, YES absolutely!! Give me a road trip any day over a quick flight! So much fun and seeing new places is fabulous. Based on where you live I suppose you're a little far north to make southern Utah/northern Arizona part of your travels but OMG, that part of the country is just so awesome and different from anywhere else - so beautiful and awesome to see on a road trip! In any case, have a blast! It will also be so much more relaxed and fulfilling as a non-smoker too (bonus!!)

  15. Hi @Abby, our awesome train founder MarylandQuitter created a whole new forum on our board in January about Big Tobacco and their lies. Check it out when you get a chance https://www.quittrain.com/forum/23-big-tobacco-exposing-the-fraud-deceit/

  22. Articles about the business practices of the merchants of death strengthened my quit during the early days of the process. I vowed to never buy another pack of smokes as I refused to give the bastards another dime of my money. There's no harm in a bit of righteous anger so long as it's aimed at the proper targets.

  26. Oh yeah it's a great substitute if you are low carbing or keto'ing. Really stick blend the cauliflower to within an inch of its life, so it's more like a rich creamy puree, add some cream cheese and grated strong cheddar. Perfect topping for fish bakes, cottage pies. Anytime a recipe calls for mash potatoes. Damn, I'm making myself hungry Did someone say bacon? *drool*

  27. He also played Davey Crockett, another famous American frontiersman who died at the Alamo, in a mid 1950's Disney TV series along side of Buddy Epsen of Beverly Hillbillies fame. My Mom bought me a Davey Crocket outfit when I was pretty young complete with the coon-skin hat with the dangling raccoon tail and all. She told me I loved that outfit so much I even wanted to wear it to bed at night lol.

  28. Hi Linda, I hesitate to speak because the situation is so sensitive and delicate that I fear I'll say something to make it worse (which happens to be what I do quite often it seems). I'll just say this - do you want to face this situation a slave to nicotine or a master of it? When I was going through my own issues in life (and I was angry about a lot of things), the one thing I decided I wouldn't allow was to be a slave to addiction and used my anger to make it my enemy and fight it. I hope you find a way that works for you to fight it also.

  29. I'm sorry to hear that Linda . My niece was 40 when she was diagnosed and had two little youngins at home . She has good days and bad , seizures of course too .. a lot of them . Its ok to feel the way you do. I know you are hurting , but don't hurt yourself to make the pain go away , do you know what I mean ? Use this time maybe to do something for her family , be strong , maybe make some freezers meals so her husband and fam can be with her at the hospital and have quick meals when they get home . Make something to comfort your friend there in the hospital maybe write a friendship book with all the good and fun things you've done together and laughed about over the years . I don't know if you will have the opportunity to see her but if not maybe one day you can share that with her family just how special she was . You can get through this smoke free and by doing something for others you'll get through feeling better .

  31. We all had many times when we thought about or wanted to go back to smoking ... for various reasons. Stress, sadness, happiness; you name it! The one thing that is universally true in EVERY case is that lighting up will not help the situation and in fact would put you in a deep dark place because you would have thrown away 5 months of hard work. I don't see the positive side anywhere to lighting up. It's junkie thinking for sure. Your addiction wants control again .... don't let that happen under any circumstances! Sorry your friend is in a tough spot Please honor her by keeping your quit. I'm sure she would want to know you're making a positive change for your future.

  33. Just finished my first 20 minute cardio walk of the day. My resting pulse rate is 64. When finished my walk, it is exactly double, or 128, which is exactly what a target heart rate should be for a 70 year old. When I started my routine walks, several weeks ago, my heart rate would be about 15 bpm higher, when done. This tells me, I am getting in better condition, and strengthening my heart. This is good for me, as I do have heart issues. Fear not, though, friends. My cardiologist has ok’d my workout routine. I actually checked with him, before starting. Those of us who are older, or those who have any chronic medical conditions, should always check with our physicians, before beginning a workout routine, especially since we are ex-smokers. Nurse KAT

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
