  2. Eventually, you'll wake up one day and realize you haven't thought about a cigarette for a week (or more). You'll smell it and be ashamed that you ever put that junk in your lungs. When you come across a situation where you see someone smoking like that, take a super deep breath (deeper than you ever could when you smoked) and know that you made the right choice. Maybe use that opportunity to brag (or even preach a little bit) to the guy about quitting. I also used to wonder if I'd ever stop thinking about them. Now, it's such a distant memory that I can hardly believe I ever smoked and sometimes even forget that I did. Stick with it. You're doing it right!

  3. This is all that matters. I was at a backyard BBQ during the long weekend, I saw a couple of friend in a group of men at 1 corner of the yard so I went over and joined them. One guy pulled out a pack of cig, and the thought immediately crossed my mind. He saw me looking at the pack so he offered me one but I immediately replied "No thanks, I'm good". I noticed how some people tried to finish their dinner quickly so they can smoke, and I felt sorry for them because that was me not too long ago, all my activities used to revolve around the next cigarette, pathetic! Kate, I wouldn't worry about having the smoking thought, it's from almost 40 years of the addiction. I don't mind the thought because I know I won't smoke, I love my freedom from Nicotine! I'm FREE!

  9. Leaving your dirty socks on the floor is a nasty habit. Not cleaning the shaving scum out of the sink is a nasty habit. Smoking is a lethal addiction. You need to take this more seriously, Linda. You need to decide enough is enough. You need to decide to stop smoking and COMMIT to never smoking again. You're no more addicted than anyone else, Linda. I smoked for 30 years and was addicted as anyone and I was able to quit. You can too, but only if you're serious about it. Quit now. Quit forever. This isn't some stupid game. This is your LIFE, Linda.

  11. I think they've already done that (better, early education) but not only that, today's general environment that kids grow up in is totally different to what it was when I was a kid. As you said yourself, parents smoked and I know when I was young, even my Dr. smoked right in front of us! "They" could have told me the very worst of everything that smoking could do to me (if in fact they knew it back then) and it still wouldn't have made me stop. Why? I was addicted and young - invincible! Plus, everyone I actually knew and respected smoked around me night and day. Those are the people I took my life messages from, not some stranger on the radio or TV. Nope! Don't think it would have changed a thing for me.

  15. Awesome! Welcome back to your quit, Linda! You know what to do. We're all rooting for you here. Congratulations on getting back up and on! You're not alone...remember that when you're working through your craves. Slay that dragon! You do NOT have to smoke! Plan your rewards now -- reap 'em with gusto and a lung full of clean air when you hit that milestone. Remind yourself of what that reward will be so you can look forward to it! Goodie for you!!!

  23. You're coming up to 7 months quit Kate. so you still have some strong remembrance of smoking in certain situations. Unexpectedly a seeminly strong urge to "have one" pops into your head. It's completely normal and happens to us all. That's what the 1 year pledge is for - to make sure you get past all those unplanned situations where your brain goes immediately to smoking, even though you may be surprised that it does this far into your quit. Remember .... every situation like this that you face and end up dismissing is another WIN for you One more notch in your quit belt Kate. Soon, there'll be no more complete surprises, just vague memories of smoking for which we all have to remain vigilant but by then, it's pretty easy

  24. 6-8 months in was a really rough time for me. You can get through it though. There are times where it is going to pop into your head and then it will just pop right back out. All you have to say to yourself is "I am not a smoker", it really does get that simple.

  25. Yesterday when I read this post. I couldn't think of one thing I liked about being smokefree. I was irritable, and just generally in a pissy mood. Today however. I like that I don't have to worry about how I smell, if my teeth and fingers are turning yellow. I don't know if you guys noticed, but I had like this strange yellowing that was staining my fingers. It took me a minute of just scrubbing it to get it off, but I didn't like that so I am liking that I am no longer yellow and stained with nicotine. I am also glad that I don't have worry about burning my house down because I fell asleep with a cigarette. Because we all know it could happen. So I am just glad to be a non-smoker. I am just glad to not be chained. I could go on probably for days, but I will just say that for the first time in a few days I can say I am happy about it. I am not going to lie, there for a couple days I couldn't figure out why I was going through all this for. The only thing that kept me going, was A) I worked to hard to get to a month smoke-free and didn't want to throw that away B) I had made my daily pledge to not smoke and I did it each and every day. irritability or not. C) I also kept really close to not only the SOS board, by my personal SOS and I just took it easy. I kept my quit because I didn't want to let myself, or you guys down. So thank you for listening, I am glad that I am smoke-free and I am also glad that I took the yearly pledge. Nana

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
