  4. I used to party back in the day, but that was a long time ago. Now that I'm older, I'm not much of a drinker. I have maybe 1 or 2 beers a year anymore. That said, we had our annual work conference in Raleigh last week and there was one night where the beers flowed like wine. I -along with about 30 of my coworkers- ended up getting pretty hammered and closing out the bar in the hotel. Now in years past, this would have been one of those "smoke 2 packs in one night" nights and I'd have woken up with not only a raging hangover, but my lungs would be wrecked as well. Well I'm happy to say, I only had to deal with a raging hangover. Although I hung out with some people that were smoking, I had no desire -not a single inkling- to smoke. I can honestly say that the thought of having a smoke never even crossed my mind. That's huge. Just one more sign that this guy is done smoking for good. NOPE!

  12. I started smoking at 13 so no regarding memory. My brain is doing major readjustments so I see my issues related to this. I still get flat/sad days. Still have craves like I want to run away from reality with a cigarette but I need to be a grown up and deal with life without the anaesthesia band-aid.

  13. Ive not had emotions pop up as you describe as in ones i felt as a non smoker. Like jillar i started as a kiddo. But i think you are for sure right that nicotine/addiction masks stuff. But hey youre doing ok so just keep going. And its good to talk about it too. I feel very mortal since quitting which is the strangest thing ever. Im only 33 for crying out loud.

  15. I used that line talking to some of the newer guys at work recently. Got nothing but blank stares in return. Apparently, none of them have seen Cool Hand Luke or for that matter, heard the song "Civil War" by Guns N' Roses. Damn greenhorn whippersnappers. Not understanding my pop culture references...making me feel old.

  16. Good for you Jim!! That is huge. I had something similar a while ago when in Vegas. People smoking all over the place - even in the pools for crying out loud Normally after a few beers I would be hankering for that smoke too but nope! I actually only felt sorry for those around me smoking. I guess the other way to put that is, I felt really happy that I no longer had the urge to smoke under those circumstances. All that hard work we do early on in our quits really pays off.

  18. A woman I used to see occasionally in the smoking area, but rarely ever talked to stepped onto the elevator with me today. Although I never learned her name, I did remember/recognize her, but didn't expect her to remember or recognize me as most women I meet can't seem to remember me at all (it's like I'm in some kind of stealth mode). Anyway, out of the blue she asked me how long it's been since I quit smoking. Well you could've knocked me over with a feather. That she remembered me was amazing enough but she had also noticed that I wasn't smoking anymore where even some of my close friends hadn't known until I told them. I told her I was closing in on two years and got a very flattering comment. We exchanged a few more pleasantries until she left the elevator. It was nice to get some positive reinforcement from a totally unexpected place. It made my day.

  20. I have found my anxiety is less but things I thought I'd dealt with years ago are popping back up at different times. I am definitely more emotional but I think in part its because when I smoked I'd go outside and smoke when things got emotional and just used the smokes to block the feelings and now I dont do that.

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
