  1. My name is Edie and I have been a smoker for the better part of 46 years. I have attempted to quit many times before but I am doing things differently this time. 1. I am doing this cold turkey. I have read from many people that if you really want to quit for good this is the way to go. 2. I am using this support group. I have never done anything like this before and I am hoping that it will help with the urges. and 3. I have let those around me know what I am doing. I feel like by telling people in my circle I will be more accountable to them and won't want to let anyone down. I guess that is it for now.

  2. I saw them. Little bird was carrying them to Mexico 1f at 9a.m. Going up to 20. Car washing weather. But -10 tomorrow. Need some aerosol cans to get the global warming started again

  3. Edie, that cigarette you are thinking about smoking is NOT your best friend. It stinks and that rubs off on you. It makes you cough and wakes you up at night. You have control over cigarettes, they do not have control over you. DON'T SMOKE!! Sincerely, Edie

  5. I am for now but I have a few new year's resolutions. I am going to start... Drinking Smoking (again) Chewing tobacco Over eating junk food Spend money more foolishly and Save less money Getting more into debt Spend more time sitting on the couch Paying less attention to family and friends Cussing a lot more and definitely more road rage Going to church less Wishing away each day Be less grateful for what i have and instead be more jealous of my neighbors Discussing politics at inopportune times. Get addicted to porn Did I miss any? On a serious note - no I am not gonna start drinking, smoking, or chewing. The rest of the list though...

  15. Back again after relapsing....hope that I am still welcome. Today is day 1 of my quit, and somehow it is different from my last attempt. I feel at peace with myself. Will post more later on a different forum, but for now it's a big old NOPE!

  19. Welcome, Edie! Lots of great advice and sincere welcomes already so I'll just add that your attitude is so important. It sounds like you're on the exact right track where that's concerned. Once smoking is off the table for good, you can just deal with what's coming up for you in th best way you can. There's no internal conflict (which can be the very worst aspect of quitting) about smoking. Hope to see you around here for a long time.

  20. Welcome, Edie. I also smoked for over 40 years. I believed I enjoyed and would never quit. What big lies I told myself! The only thing a cigarette does is relieve withdrawal symptoms for a few minutes.Once I understood that basic truth, I was dedicated to Not One Puff Ever. It was uncomfortable, even miserable at times, but you have to be decide to just get through it. Such a relief to be able to get on an airplane, go to a movie or concert, or even a business meeting or family dinner without having to worry about the next fix. You can do this!

  24. Hi Edie Welcome to our family. I too ended up quitting cold turkey. My quit wasn't very well planned but it has so far worked out well for me. I can't say it was easy but it is certainly doable and we here are all the proof of that. Education about the addiction, an unwavering commitment to yourself and determination will all be key components as well as support from like-minded people (that's us) As Doreen said, stay active here, it really does help! You idea of telling others you have quit is great as it does help to keep you committed but in the end, you're doing this for YOU. And it's the best gift you could give yourself Look forward to seeing you around.

We have many people here who have quit after smoking for decades ....you can do it...let's get you going !!!! On the main discussion page..you will find tons of info..they are pinned with a green square....knowledge will be your weapon... Folks who come here every day...are the ones who succeed... I see you have done a NOPE today...a brilliant start...this is a promise to yourself ,you will not smoke that day... The fact that you want to quit smoking is a very positive move forward, the fact that you are seeking help with your PTSD is another step forward in the right direction, you really have to be your own advocate, mental health awareness has a lot to be desired both in UK and USA, I strongly suggest you get in touch with veteran charities who will understand your mind set better, staying with your buddy if you can seems a good idea, even if you cant stay maybe he can help you find a charity. You were a soldier that means you ARE a soldier that never leaves you! you are a fighter and YOU matter, so one step at at a time, go get better, there is no magic pill or wand that will take away the pain but seeking help is the first step, good luck. we are here when you are ready!

  33. Yeah it is normal to miss it. But then you start to think - we also tend to miss those really bad relationships we had with people who basically were not worth a damn. YET, we would not go back to them cause nothing good would come of it.

  38. I am fairly new I am going on my 3rd week quit. And i can say I would think it would be gross. I also still think about smoking, i won't do it but it crosses my mind not as bad as it was before.We just have to keep on keeping on and know that we are doing this for ourselves and loved ones.

  39. I reported the Doctor at the hospital. I was really upset this morning, but Im ready to refocus. I have another mental health appointment in a few days. If I end up not being able to go to residential treatment, I formulated another plan this morning. A friend of mine quit smoking recently, he is also a veteran. I'm going to tell him all the trouble Im having and see if he will let me stay at his house for a week. I would have constant support, no access to nicotine, peace and quiet in the yard...I dont know why I didnt think of it sooner. Not gonna give up no matter what. I will be back on the forum when I quit.

  42. I made 11k in 1989 as e5. Thought to myself if I could make $8 an hour I would be ahead. Think you don't make up the 25k with investments. Most need 70-80% of working wage after first year and settling in. Also you can work a second career if only 39. Most retired military do something. So you really only need a 2.2k a month job to be in same 50k range. Also the 4% spend assumes you are dipping into principle unless you plan on saving it for someone else .
